Yes no black yet and it seems like silver SkullCap is not as gloss as i thought would be,looks really nice.

 

what do you mean? I'm sure it's got the exact same level of glossyness as the ripley -- you may just not be able to see it from these shots because the skullcap doesn't have long, flat areas like the ripley

 

what im saying is that they promised all of these variants for te m15x and its been half a year without a black m15x. I orriginally thought that this may be difficult to do a they would need so many different types of cases in stock, yet it sems like it takes months to get in parts from their manufacterer, so they might aswell just custom order all of the parts as it will most likely just take as long.

Guys, I think it's pretty apparent after today that the black skullcap isn't going to happen. What are the chances of 3 versions of the same laptop? They more than likely are using black skullcap for the m17x.

 

The platform after Montevina will be Calpella and it will be using Nehalem based CPU's. There will be two different CPU's for the platform, Auburndale a dual core with an integrated MCH and GPU and Clarksfield a quad core with only an integrated MCH. If the early performance of the desktop Bloomfield version is any indication it will be like the core performance jump all over again. Expect Alienware to take as long as usual and have something based on it by CES 2010.

 

I agree; it sounds like the black colour options for the m15x are history.

@taco: in all honesty they really shouldn't. the idea is that these laptops are supposed to be equal; you choose skullcap or ripley because you like one design over the other, not because one is "better" because it costs more.

 

I feel cheated still sorry guys, US has had the m17x for weeks and now gets a new site ( im sure it will spread to other national sites ) and now the skullcap with no black design. Can we just have the m17x atleast please Alienware?

 

So guys how should I go about changing my M15x order to skullcap design? I'm still in phase 3 so idk if it'll delay my order to much, any help would be appreciated

 

I agree with you there Spadess, it seems they are focusing on the USA and ignoring us in the Uk at the moment. The web-site is good but when are we going to get an equal footing.....?

You know GRB silver its really nice and looks is a serius factor before i decide,now silver SkullCap is really nice but what is more importand is the performance and the upcoming reviews of m17x,i will wait untill i see some benchs from m17x users since i waited all that long and then ill pull the trigger.

1, We have no plans to offer silver skull cap in any other country besides US. (GRrrrrrrrrrrr)
2, m17x for uk - end of June release date approx.

Well, I just called the order change department, just out of curiosity, and asked them if it's possible to change a current order to skullcap and how long that would take. She put me on hold and contacted the necessary department(s) and said that she was told that it would take up to 4 extra weeks to switch from a normal ripley to a skullcap in mid-order. She was told that the best recommendation in that case is to cancel and re-order in which case it would be almost 2 months before shipment. I told her thanks and to PLEASE keep my current order and DO NOT cancel. I had to repeat myself just in case there was some confusion. I think the silver skullcap looks good, but it's not that big of a deal to me and I don't want it bad enough to wait 2 more months. Ugh.

 

So if this can be believed (seems a little odd but...)

The guys in the USA get better pricing....AND better options?

You got to be ****ING kidding me! It says on their website if you order skullcap that your estimated ship date is june 23rd...

 

Yea I just noticed that, so I think she might have been just agreeing with me. My words to her were more on the line of "so, if I cancel and re-order, we'll have the new ETA's which are about 2 months from now, correct?" (and the ETA's were about that as of 2 days ago) She said "Yes, that's correct." ... but she probably wasn't actively checking as she was talking to me.

Anyway, long story short... I noticed the updated ship date for skullcap. Ironically enough it's about 2 weeks sooner than it would be for a ripley. I cancelled my ripley order and went with the skullcap. Hell, I can wait until the end of the month and I do prefer the skullcap. I'm actually glad it's in silver. If there had been a black skullcap, I would have stuck with silver ripley.

 

groove I think you got a crappy agent because i just got off the phone with cs agent Carroll and she was great she told me what phase I was in, phase 3, and she told me an order change to skullcap would probably not delay my order at all

 

That's probably because you were in phase 3. I was in phase 6 which meant they would have to rip out everything, put it in the new case, and reformat. Personally, I'm feeling a little better about ordering it from scratch rather than have a pissed of tech get the message to cannabalize the new laptop he's been building since last week and put it in a new case and start all over. I can see him flinging my stuff around and cursing under his breath.

 

is anyone else as incredulous and depressed as I am that the first update they do in almost 6 months and its ANOTHER silver case....

i would buy EITHER design in black. I dont care which, but i personally hate the silver case. Why would you announce in november of last year, 2 colors, then 6 months after the laptop is released still only have one. Not to mention the VP himself said "black in a couple of weeks".. .."skullcap before the summer" not even 2 months ago during the last alien network video.


thats it for me, if they would have just been honest when this came out and said it was only in silver, i might have convinced myself to buy it. but now i've been without a comp (i had a busted one, and put off repairing so i could get an m15x) for 7 ish months because of *almost* blatant misleading by the company. absolutely ridiculous, and unfortunately for them, that clevo machine (dont remember the model) is coming out this month, and because of their mistake a black m15x probably wont release for another 5 months. I guess i just became a clevo owner.

 

be warned that the m860tu is tied to montevina and has already been delayed (may be delayed again) to mid july I believe.

 

do think the skullcap can be installed on a ripley m15x?

 

if your ripley *accidentally* gets a major scratch in it, then yes

probably not, I doubt they would make the skullcap matte silver and the ripley gloss silver.

 

It's not matte. It's the same paint, same gloss. Just with the skullcap ridges on the lid. Pretty ugly, IMO.

 

some like it, some don't. it's the classic AW look. personally I'm also not a fan so I'm glad they provided us guys with the ripley option, but you can't deny many will like this. I have a friend who was waiting on skullcap (though in black... we'll see if he bites with just skullcap)

The fact that have not released the m17x in skullcap yet makes me question... mabye they will add Black options to the m15x when they do that?....

i'm completely fed up with waiting but.. im just going to get silver skullcap and learn to love it for a year or 2... then repaint it Green or Orange once warranty runs out and i feel confident enough to strip down the entire chassis.

the prob i had with rip all along is that it made the m15x look like a cheap macbook pro... totally not a cool look from my perspective. Whats the point of getting a alienware if u want it to be some thing els?

and yer the skullcap should stop the lit flexing as much... so yay i guess its plain only silver for me <_>

 

as I was saying to someone else, the gloss probably doesn't show through as much because the skullcap has a lot more angles which don't reflect light. the ripley, with it's two-angle back, will reflect light like mad.

besides, look at the main chassis (keyboard area). for both skullcap and ripley they are incredibly reflective

 

IMO, the skullcap looks pretty sweet. And the new AW website layout looks nice as well.

 

im so depressed i was so hyped for a matte black finish gooood im gutted.
hummm i guess the alienware network is not for another 14days.. mabye they will add black matte by then or mabye the m17x press shots are lies and the m17x is not matte at all and even more of a fingerprint magnet <_> they did say in the last network that both m17x and m15x would get all 2 options of both color and case

i guess the best thing that could happen now was some one get a m17x and find out its gloss so i could get the sliver skull cap with out worries <_>

heath, if fingerprints are your concern, the silver hides them really well. on the black edge it's a little more visible but silver you really have to get low and look on an angle to see the prints.

 

yes this is true but its more of a feel issue... i just dont like my hands on a gloss surface matte is what i like.. and its fairly clear from the press of the m17x that it is atleast using a slightly less reflective coat.




sigh this has really upsetme at least the iphone2 is announced and is coming officaly to Australia that makes this day slightly less depressing. Dam u alienware u crushed my dreams! and made me look stupid for waiting... i would have had a m15x 5months ago!

 

yeah I've also been distracted as us here in the fellow commonwealth country of Canada also finally got us an iPhone. July 11th is a bad date for me, but I hope the one Rogers store in the area I'll be will be carrying them

the only difference between skull cap and ripley design is the back of the lcd. i dont see how you cant change it by just swapping screens.

 

If one company can't suit your needs, there are others out there that will.

That said, I think the skullcap looks great. It's not black, but it is one more option than they were giving before. Not many computer brands give you a physical case design choice like Alienware, I have to give them props for that. As a matter of fact I think this is the first time they are doing it (not counting different color choices).
