I really want to upgrade my m9700 to a ssd, and I'm wondering if it is possible to put a SATA II drive into my computer. Thanks in advance.

Does it have a SATA II controller? Even if it has plain SATA it will work but it will max out at 150.

How do I tell if its sata or sata II? and will maxing out at 150 negate the speed of the drive?

A program like Everest should tell you. 150 will still double your sequential read speeds over a 7200RPM disk. Unfortunately disks never work sequentially. IMO, unless I had SATA-II I wouldn't bother with the extra cost of SSD.
