Hello. I've got a question regarding the sales tax in California.

Does AW have locations in CA? If they don't I can't be charged sales tax, right? But they do charge sales tax for items shipping to CA. so I assume they have some sort of local in CA or else it'd be illegal to charge sales tax.

    Just wanted to verify.

Dell has locations in California, and since Alienware is a wholely-owned subsidiary of Dell, by default, they charge sales tax.

Damn it. Oh well, thanks for the info. I've got another question though, how can I avoid the tax? What if I have it shipped to Delaware (Delaware has no sales tax) and then shipped to CA. I know no body there though.

LOL, how about buying a cheaper system instead of screwing your state over eh?

Just for entertainment, let's consider the Delaware option. Say Uncle Bob lives in Delaware, the laptop is shipped to him, and he ships it to you. You legally still have to pay what is called a "use tax", which is usually at the same rate as the sales tax. Not paying the "use tax" is considered perjury/tax evasion. Them boneheads in that thar gov'nt be smart.

well since you dont know anyone there it wont be possible. the package has to go somewhere. even if you do ship it to delaware you will also have to get the person you know to pay shipping to cali. unless you know someone living in a place with no sales tax you will be forced to pay it. there is really no way around the sales tax.

In all realities, having to ship the laptop, to even avoid sales tax, would be pointless.

It would need to be shipped as "Dangerous Goods," due to its lithium battery, and because of the cost/weight of the item, you're looking at a sum of money that makes it basically pointless to try and avoid a simply sales tax.
