I`m after a laptop to replace a desktop, the M17X seems to fit the bill.
I have a couple of quick questions.
1. Whats the screen like, is it matt or gloss, how reflective is it ?
2. How noisy is the machine when just doing normal tasks like browsing.
3. Whats it like for gaming ? Does it run everything you throw at it ?
Try and sell me it, i have cash burning a hole in my pocket, tell me why i should part with some cash on an M17X.
If you can, can you list some of the pros and cons.

I personally would never choose a laptop as my main gaming rig, desktops have way better power/price ration than gaming laptops do so you can get ALOT more bang for the buck by going for a desktop instead. But if you MUST have a laptop than I cannot recommend anything better than the m17x, I heard many good stories about it, ofcourse as many other laptops it has its share of issues, but lets be honest what modern device doesn't?

It's Glossy, speaking from my M17x R1, and M11x, they are very glossy, not great if there is a ton of light at your back.
Noise all depends on what your doing. The fans are not bad if your just browsing, justloud when gaming, but with that much power, and a great cooling system, thats expected.
Gaming it will run just about everything.
It's your money so ultimately your decision, but if your into PC gaming or LAN parties, it's a great powerful system. Currently I'm waiting till they offer the ATI 5870 GPUs for it.
Pro's are power, CPU/GPU.
Cons, Noise if loud cooling fans (3 - one for each GPU, 1 for CPU) bothers you. To me it's more comforting.
Size can go either way, depends on what your looking for.
Another pro is the RGB LED screen. From what I heard, it looks great compared to your standard CCFL screen.
Con, Wieght. 13lbs. or so.
Pro, Can run in RAID if you so desire.
Pro, Interchangable parts offer a lot of flexibility and customizing.
Pro, Not a generic plastic case. Anodized aluminum, very well built.
Pro, Illuminated keyboard if your using it in the dark
It's all up to you and what your looking for. But a big plus is the warranty and the 21 day return period. If your not satisfied within 21 days of invoice, call up and return it with out a restocking fee. -
Do you reckon i should buy now or is something new about to happen with the M17X in the near future ?
Whats the best screen to get and best graphics cards ? -
One thing I have learned from Alienware is that you can always wait for a next upgrade, but eventually you still have to buy it at some time.
My advice: Buy it right now if you like it. -
I'd advise you to buy a netbook at Costco and use OnLive. It will save you a bundle that you can put towards your retirement.
-
lol, Nice one Joker, GPU's would be 4870's at the moment. X-Fire. Screen is LCD. 5870's should be out soon, but no real date announced yet.

Hey, I'll give you a good deal on mines...PM me!

redacted due to stupidity

I hate threads like these, whats the point. You need some silly justification from strangers on a forum to provide reason as to why you must spend your money? Or you're too lazy to do the research on a system yourself you're asking for everyone in here to do it for you? Figure it out yourself... Because in the end it's going to look pretty stupid if it doesn't work out for you and then you come back to someone in here to blame down the road.
Try to sell me it? like a Used Car Sales men? Sheesh..... -
i kind of agree with darkloki.
its fine to ask questions before a purchase but to me it feels stupid asking a bunch of strangers to convince me to part with my money.
id rather research on my own and read some reviews.
and from what i see from other similar threads, the op will then come back with some arguments to counter our suggestions and be against buying the machine which would make the thread entirely pointless -

I see your point, but I think it does help a little bit. It's hard to actually go anywhere and play with Alienware laptops.
But I agree to do some research yourself to see what you prefer -- in particular there are quite a few threads about well... pretty much any possible Alienware build.Hell, there's even a separate 7-page discussion on differences between SU4100 and SU7300 CPUs!

pssst, darkloki, I'm working an angle for a cheap system down the road
Geezer, buddy, old pal. M17x is simply fantastic! It can create women like in "Wierd science..." Worth it's wieght in gold! -
Yup! Pretty sure the specs were mid/low but it was cool to actually toy around with the machine before it gets here.
I'd never seen an Alienware product in a store before. My wife was just as excited. -
you can buy matte finish films with a silicone based adhesive that will turn the screen to matte. They are perfect and I have 1 on mine. Looks like it came from the factory with a matte finish looks flawless
-
you care to name a specific product?
-
I'd personally avoid going larger then a 15"... the 17" is huuuuge.
Do a desktop PC, and either the m11x or m15x imo. -
the m15x doesn't seem any more portable to me, and you miss out on a lot of the advantages of an m17x. -
yea the m15x is actaully really heavy for an 15 inch so if you can take the weight, the m17x is a little bit heavier but a hell load more powerful

Call me Crazy but i went as far back as to pick up an Area-51 m15x of the highest specs, with a possible 280m-260m in the future, but I'm currently sitting on a nice 9800m GT. and a desktop with an i7 and a 5870 in it. High-end laptop gaming has got me down lately since my m1730 blew up, overall I really love my older m15x though, and people are letting them go for cheap, while they're Solid Machines.
Sell the M17X to me, why should i buy it ?
