That soon of a possible release would mean no Kaby Lake? :(

I agree... no reason for optimism. Skunks don't change their stripes. Even if they used a socketed CPU and MXM it would probably have a flash-protected BIOS that is severely crippled and emasculated power handling like the Alienware 18. The hardware is meaningless in that scenario. It's like having a Shelby Mustang powered by a 428 Super Cobrajet with a governor on it... no point in even bothering with crippled trash.

did svl7 ever figure out how to remove the 330w limitation on the AW18?

He got his hands on a mobo schematic and had a pretty good idea what they did to castrate it on purpose. The fix would require some minor soldering work on the mobo, but he has vanished into another world and doesn't respond to my emails any more. I don't know any specifics about what he thinks could fix it because our communication on that subject never got that far along.

Alienware put the best timeless design plus top performance (M18x R2), loved the MXM thing and full customization of Hw when buying & cool goodies with the machine but now nothing of that remains, only caters to bubblegum kool-aid kids with nerfed junk.

Please abandon your hope, A gazzillion'th time again here I come !!

    /Start.
Dell is private the deal is complete by fully nerfing the Alienware, once king now just a pauper but disguised in the earlier shadow...Alienware is DEAD. Period. And NOT coming back, Have a look at past how the thing progressed regressed they didn't care about the Haswell AW machines fan profiles until the last BIOS and the secureflash, 330W limit on both AW17 and AW18, Fan profiles, EC gimping, Maxwell support, AMA B$ PR feat replies to Mr. Fox, Gen 1 echo BGA haswell suffered from crippled BIOS / Mobo burnouts, Throttling, design regression with less user maintenance, PSU gate, And the Desktop Alienware ? what they offer is now worthless junk, even won't be bought by a junk shop for a penny. Precision was fantastic until the M6800 and now, the 7000 series is not like that, XPS died prematurely engulfed by the Dell's greed.

After all that mess I wouldn't bother about this corp anymore like ASUS, These two filthy brands could've kept up the MXM design keep going but nope they are corrupted by the greed and the collective decision led the BGA filth rise up and no more reference MXM GPU PCBs due to less demand, they will just shove whatever they want until a backlash, BGA is a hit so no reversal there, Just don't buy the BGA GPUs else the DTR scene is dead.

    /end of rant.

I wish svl7 was still there, He had a custom sBIOS hardmod for his Alienware 17, It didn't had the secure flash, I wanted to go for that mod once I move out of my country but Alas ! He's MIA no way that could be accomplished now, I knew him since my M15x days but I wasn't much involved back then (high school guy) too bad else M15x would've been still with me.., guess those were fun times, M15x was a beauty of its own, Win7 and MXM GPUs with AMD vs Nvidia, miss ol days....

Alienware is DEAD for us Hardcore power enthusiasts. But still alive for a particular group of people who prefer portable notebooks with same or lower performance than chep brand as Acer and eMachineBooks!! What's the point with possible desktop hardware, if the next important in a powerful laptop <Firmvare> Is gimped? I can guarantee you that Dell will lock their Firmvare as before!!

I went into a computer repair shop the other day looking for some odds and ends and spoke with the rep. Out of curiosity I asked the guy if he ever worked on an AW18. He said no, but he's said he worked on a 17 a couple 15's and a bunch of 14's. I thought that was interesting. It really shows that the lower end, thin BGA AW's are the ones people are buying. Not surprising based on what we see people wanting nowadays but still disappointing. If they ate selling good #'s of their new mainstream machines there is zero incentive for them to do anything else.

About AW18 BIOS he probably wanted to full dump the actual BIOS and program it into new chip using hardware programmer. That will force overwrite actual bios with SecureFlash ON with the unlocked version with SecureFlash OFF. That would enable next BIOS flashes.

But if Alienware physically removed all the options from BIOS it would be hard to add them manually. In M18xR1/R2 they are just hidden so unlocked BIOS shows hidden values again.

I love how some users here always take one case and project it to an entire line. AW15R1/AW17R2 burn out motherboard issues? There is 1 friggin case on this forum of an user with a burnt cable. Just one!!!!

People are just making statements that they copied from eachother like gossip and it turned into this ****. Disappointing for people who consider their choices to be intelligent.

I saw this happening already for pretty much 1 year and this subforum is pure toxic. Only nagging, complaining etc from users that dont have anything to do with Alienware anymore.

Being honest im currently thinking to get a Clevo desktop replacement since they get 3 hour battery life. But with the new gtx 1070-1080 since they are even more power efficient.

But im not sure. Since a 15" 17" alienware with the mobile or downclocked variant of 1070 would be ways better looking. And probably higher quality.? And lighter. Since it for my girlfriend.

Kinda like the fact it will last as long as my desktop. But not sure she will like carrying 12lbs.

And clevo is well rated but to me it kinda look a cheap chinesse garbage like lenovo.

    What you think?

Will have more idea in september maybe a destkop replacement alienware with i7 6700k :D

Cant stand an opinion that is different than yours? I just point out some incorrect statements. And it is true that most posters in this topic arent even Alienware owners anymore turning the Alienware subforum in quite the toxic environment.
The internals are great for the purpose, the chassis however keeps feeling cheaply made. Even though they made past Alienwares which where very good for the time. Only their batteries though are not so great. Simplo battery cells. Something Microsoft is catching flack for now with their Surface Pro tablets that have too quickly degrading battery packs, which are made by Simplo as well, their non Simplo battery packs do last. Same goes for Gigabyte laptops which have the same issue which is even accelerated because of the heat inside of their units.

And you expect that a new Aw 17 with desktop i7 *if Dell have balls to make one* will have same thin Apple factor and will be very light and slim with incredible long battery life? :D

I guess the Insyde H2O BIOS is a robust one, used to lock us out instead to give more functionality what a filthy mindset, they need to die. I guess it came with M17x R4, AW17, M18x R2, AW18, and the feature set might be still there hidden prolly.

@bonami2 the 10 series might look power efficient but nope, the GTX 1070(m) is purported to have extra 10W TDP over the 980M predecessor, 1060 on an otherside no clue, 1080N would be skyrocketing TDP and non standard MXM formfactor which means no slim notebook / crippled heatsink can have that, A.k.a no Alienwares as of now has the 980N.

PS: N stands for Desktop mobile, GTX 980 which sits at 200W and full GM204 core a.k.a full GTX 980 but this time Nvidia is milking at it's best, 1080N will not be a full GP104 core a.k.a gimped.

The heatsinks in current alienwares are good. Keeping a 980M at 65c~70c under absolute full load. The aw17r3 even has some emlty spacethat could be used to enlarge the heatsinks. I suspect that they considered it too late to release 980 desktop gpu laptop considering the other bands also only released it this year. Pascal is right around the corner.

Aorus has it and their cooling os way worse than all alienwares out there.

Only Clevo P870 with pure air cooling and Asus with their **** water dock can cool a 200w graphics properly. Even with a decent Oc. All other brands models with desktop graphics have problems with that. I think we will see OEM's use different TDP desktop cards in their most powerful laptops.

Yeah it can still be there. If someone would like to replicate his work will need a tool to edit InsydeBIOS (I saw some tools on the internet) a hardware programmer and some soldering skills.

Incorrect what you say. The Acer which has a similar chassis as the AW17R3 runs it at full speed, The Asus can run it without the watercooling at near full speed, but can only overclock with with the watercooling. Not that the laptops you mention can hold the full boost clock in all situations. Tweakers.net a Dutch techsite benchmarked it without the liquid cooling and it ran fine.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-GX700-Notebook-Review.156842.0.html
"Thanks to the water-cooling, the core can always maintain its maximum clock: 1228 MHz is not always managed by the competition ( GT72S 6QF, XMG U716/ U726), which also explains the small lead in the GPU benchmarks in combination with the overclocked CPU."

Don't state things that you heard from hearsay.

The 970 used more power than the current 1070 if im not mistaken.

I think im gonna get a alienware 15. Just need to wait now for a new gpu.

Now im wondering how you carry a alienware in public. Are people crazy enough to steal you for it.
One good thing about clevo.. It look like a cheap laptop..

This is true, the power draw is less. But the GPU chip die is now smaller and more tightly packed so it needs the same amount or even more cooling to keep it cool. The price of a new not so mature architecture unfortunately.

Auros, Asus, MSI and most likely AcerBook use Gtx980 with lower TDP than 200w, The big boy Gtx980 is used in my P870 and the special Msi model from Xotic.

I don't know if you've seen this one. Asus without water cooling and with the lower TDP 980 graphics as they prefer.

Auros X7 struggle also with temp because the use of shared heatpipes, like most of models with this Crippled cooling design. NO headroom for decent OC on this model as well.
    upload_2016-7-31_23-7-4.png

Not all 980 used in laptops are 200w graphics!! And most of the laptops haven't headroom for Overcloking!! And most part use crippled design like shared pipes/heatsink!! And how many of those BGABOOK'S can run 4.8/4.9 GHz on processor without cooling problems? They already struggle with 3.2 GHz in bench!!

I haven't this Crappy thermal problems like those brand ↑↑↑↑ duo to the Clevo P870 use of 2 different heatsink(cpu/gpu). Google me and you can see max temp from heavy overclocked hardware in bench from the P870 BGA KILLER!! Also look at @Mr. Fox testing of the beast and see his max hardware temps from his p870 Alienware Killer!!
And how many of the laptop models ↑↑↑↑ can use 2 - 3 of 330w psu without limit? And not forget the noise from thise BGABOOK's.

Shared heatpipe doesnt automatically means crippled.. If you have 2 blocks of equal size separated and only 2 heatpipes are connected to each it will cool most probably the same as the same heatsink setup, same thickness of heatpipes when all 4 are connected to both heatsinks and both chips. Its about the size of the heatsinks, thickness of the heatpipes etc that matters. Not if they are separated or shared.

The Geforce 980 is a 165watt TDP chip by the way. Not 200 watts. It can run up to 200 watts with overclocking.

Also we are not talking about overclocking here we are talking about if other laptops can run the 980 (and or 1070/1080) in their chassis.

Also those BGA, Alienware killers names sound ridiculous. Really no one can take you serious outside of this discussion.

It is true that the Aorus X7 struggles with it. That is because that laptop is 2cm thick. There is no space to cool it. The Acer however runs it at full speed, the Asus also runs it at full speed and can overclock with the dock attached (CPU will also be overclocked by the way),

Again you state things from hearsay and you even post a review yourself with it and the 980 performs as expected in that laptop with a 45watt cpu. They should have noted the graphics only score for both your machine at stock and the asus at stock for a good comparison though. See the attached picture which came from your own link. Those differences are so small. The 980 runs fine in the Asus.

No. Gtx 980 come in different design and TDP. Also the lower TDP card have weaker and fewer component's on PCB. You can Google it in T|I forum if you want.
This two 980 examples is from Clevo machines. And other brand have their own cards with limitations. Remember its still a core limit if you want OC with stock vbios and the lower TDP cards have lower core clock from the bottom.

Shared heatsink have a big drawback... Often Uneven/warped problems. Good fit on Cpu or vica verca problem with fit on Gpu. Not very good fit on both cpu/gpu.

So true. Some people thinking it's cool to contaminate a forum with their broken record non sense that is not relevant to the topic.

Pollution to a thread = "Look guys I have a brand C, but I like to pollute a forum with Brand A's, because I'm immature and it makes me feel better to floss my DTR (Desktop Replacement / Not a laptop) with obvious benches to tickle my pickle. Wow I'm cool. Not."

I just don't grasp the point.

Yea IMO they are butt ugly like the first IBM think pads. Even those looked better.

I'd rather build a desktop and check in an extra suitcase any day.

The newer chipsets (1080M) will be sufficient for most people, more so when the 980M has been holding its own pretty well even now.

When the R4 with the 1080M releases, it'll be a new ball game and make the DTR 980 equipped machines irrelevant in terms of having to have a DTR for Desktop performance.

i wonder whats new in the sept alienware launches apart from expected pascal...
will it have kabylake, 3dxpoint, new design, infinity edge ? cant wait. I know folks are passionate about mxm and lga , but they are lost causes imo.

so lets focus on what might be new and innovative in these launches

OEM's use various desktop 980 graphics card. Most of the OEM's use the less worthy low powered GTX980. This means that most 980 cards have the lower base or boost clock. If you pluses maximum Overclock <135 MHz which is Nvidia's maximum overclock> on top of this... It means that most of desktop card from BGA brands will have a lower maximum overclock with stock vbios. Weaker VRM's or smaller number of these who is the standard on lower TDP cards means bigger problem with a real overclock!! Same problem with a loosy OC if they use a mod vbios. Just look at Futuremark... Not many low powered 980 desktop cards in BGA machines is at the top of bench ranking http://www.3dmark.com/search :D

It's not necessary that you grasp the point, nor is it important that you do. Any time there is meaningful debate underway some crybaby whines to moderators about it and the thread ends up closed anyhow.

There is a significant difference that separates the former Alienware owners from the current. If you pay close enough attention you can see it. We openly criticize lame hardware and express contempt for things we don't like, but we do not resort to temper tantrums and insults against the individuals with an opposing perspective. I'm sorry you think we are "no life losers" or that censorship is preferable to an exchange of opinions. But, none of that really matters if you're happy. If you like what you've got, that's great... we're happy for you even if it doesn't meet our expectations.

The fact that the main forum gets spammed with model-specific threads posted in the wrong place by people that don't pay attention to where they are posting probably doesn't help either. I seldom visit the Alienware BGA threads because I have no reason to. Nor do I venture into that realm looking for a place to stir up strife. However, when something ends up in the main forum with open-ended questions and requests for advice we should all be wearing our big boy pants and be willing to accept there is more than one view about whether BGA is acceptable or not. If only a one-sided discussion is appropriate, that needs to happen in threads where only people with that narrow point of view hang out. Exchange hugs and kisses, sing Kumbaya and roast marshmallows with birds of a feather.

That's good info and most people are not fully educated on these things. Thanks for sharing it. The 200W 980 has flexible TDP and I've seen over 300W from mine.

Now that NVIDIA has totally wussed out on us and there is no longer a standard MXM reference design, I think it is going to be even more difficult for people to stay current on things simply because OEMs are freer than ever to make their own hybrid proprietary crap than they have been in the past, and consumers will end up screwed in the long run. If you cannot upgrade because the blueprints keep changing that could end up having some of the same drawbacks we complain about with BGA... a dead end is a dead end no matter how you look at it. The only way to deal with dead-end filth is to vote "no" with your wallet and let that garbage rot in a warehouse. Don't buy disposable trash, even if it is mounted in a socket or slot. A laptop with a proprietary GPU is only better than BGA to the extent it is modular and easier to service.

The thread started with us tagged in!! Can't we socket enthusiasts have opinion about hardware we don't like without insults from other who have another meaning?

Exactly... that's why we all need to be wearing our big boy pants in the main forum. Those that don't want to read or tolerate any expressions of an opinion that the new Alienware way is undesirable and that anything made using a BGA design is viewed as garbage by enthusiasts shouldn't visit threads where that opinion is being expressed. We don't hate the brand... we hate what they are offering and the absence of options, along with anything and everything else on the market that is made that way.

Actually it is very necessary that I and others grasp the point, because you along with a selected few are the ones who initiate the bashing of a thread in the first place. It does nothing but bring unnecessary contamination. Period.

Please quit polluting these threads with your internal personal issues of what you have already repeated a million times in many different threads. No one cares to hear it. If you haven't figured it out by now, you're barking up the wrong tree. If people actually need more portable power, then they'll buy accordingly, but obviously not everyone needs a desktop component crammed into an old school IBM Thinkpad cheap plastic body.

It is also very childish and immature to think that it's ok to bash others for choosing to own a current AW. Not everyone wants or needs a Desktop Replacement, so why are you even putting that in the same category as a Gaming Laptop? Common sense people...It's like comparing a Desktop to a Laptop. Seriously?

To prove my point, this all started with the, "...bga owners being labled as kool-aid drinkers,.." in post #13 and with all those including yourself supporting such childish remarks.

The fact is, the basis of your (bga bashing radical) replies are nothing but being viewed as polishing your own little ego's. For what? No one cares. Just stop it already.

Before you even begin to criticize other AW owners, you need to first examine yourself and to come to the realization that your unwanted rampage of rubbish replies regarding bga's is not welcomed.

Just for the record, I do have some respect for what you do and have done in providing some data of benches, but do keep in mind that those intense benches done with unrealistic methods* is synthetic and does not bring much justice to real world use.

In all seriousness, [...removed by mod]

I hope you bga hating radicals graduate first to even begin to wear big boy pants, because your actions and replies reflect that of a child.

Even us with bga's don't all favor the idea of the direction, but that doesn't blind us from practicality. As you can see, there are a ton of happy bga owners. Does that make you jealous? The way you and a few approach it sure does make it seem so...to see these bga's being able to offer respectable performance at half the cost...

If you're not happy about us currently with the 980M, I guess we'll have our Clevo 980 variant on the next refresh with the R4 w/ a 1080M. That would then make your 980 DTR obsolete to where you'd have to dish out another grand+ to replace your GPU? Ouch.

I agree. Considering that the current top of the line offering from AW with the 6820HK/980M/4K is holding itself well, the upgrades from the refresh of the R4 will IMO make it worthwhile to upgrade.

It'd be nice to see the following:

    CPU:
The current 6820HK has a lot of life to it and nothing that I do really taxes it much to the point where it makes me feel like I need a CPU upgrade. Another Skylake would suffice, but I'm sure we'd all take a Kaby Lake if it's offered.

    GPU:
The 980M has done well and has held its ground. With the new 1080M and with it outclassing the current non M 980, the gap will be closed of being forced to buy a DTR (desktop replacement) to obtain desktop like performance. This is exciting times for sure, because this jump in performance in the Mobile GPU arena is the biggest we've seen in respect to true desktop performance. - Also, in theory wouldn't it make sense for Dell to go MXM at least for the GPU since the price of the 1080M will cost a lot more to replace? In the end wouldn't it be cheaper for them to replace borked GPU's than having to replace the entire mobo? <- Yes, that was rhetorical on purpose to make a point. Maybe we'll be surprised? Who knows but either way, 1080M here we come...

    Display:
I'm sure they'll still offer a 1080p and 4K option, however, I would like to see a Glass Touch 4K screen personally. It's not that I use the touch screen, but the displays that are touch / 4k are always more solid and better built. Take the new Dell XPS for example, I would love to have that quality of display on an AW. We'll likely also see an OLED option as well, considering that it is currently being offered on on the AW 13. I'd personally opt for the OLED if it becomes available...just personal preference.

    Ports:
Everything that the current R3 has can stay, but it would be nice to have some more USB C ports.

    Trackpad:
It would be nice to have a glass track pad like the one on the Dell XPS, which is excellent. It's the only pad that I've used that can start knocking on the MBP's door.

    Heat Sink/Pipes:
Either run an extra pipe along the current ones or make them a little more beefier. There is enough clearance in the R3 to make that possible even now. I'm happy with the size of the current R3 so personally it can stay the same thickness and I wouldn't mind...

    PCIe Slots:
Please make them both 4x and not 4x + 2x LOL...

    Bottom Cover / Panel:
I hope that the R4 allows for the bottom panel to come off instead of having to take apart the entire laptop just to get to the heat sink.

Other than that, I can't really think of anything else? Not too much to ask eh?

I have to say....Forget about bga for a moment....And lets refer to a post you made... @iunlock

This is exactly why Alienware gets bashed. We addressed everything on your list and do you know what they did? They made it hell for everyone after us. And now that is what is known as common knowledge because new users have no clue what Alienware use to be about. The last great notebook was the M18XR2. They asked us for input and we gave it to them and now you get all the problems on your list because they took all our ideas and used them against us. I would not give them any more if I were you.

Me, I'll bench the hell out of a bga setup till it's 14 day return is up. :D

All very good additions indeed, but if they are all locked down and only partially work as intended, then what?
