Hey U Guys Seem To Kno Alot About Alienware Laptops. And I Really Need Some Good Advise Before I Return My Current M17x Get My Cash Back And Then Get The Refreshd One.. This Is The Config I Have Rite Now .. Q9000, Dual Gtx 260m ,4 Gig Ram 1066 , 1920x1200 Screen .. I Was Just On The Alienware Site And This Is What I Configured For The Same Price(2399 Before Tax) Core I7 720qm, Dual Ati Radeon Mobility Hd 4870 , 4gigs Ram 1066 , 1920x1200 Screen Resolution.. Now My Question Is Am I Gonna Be Getting A Better Proccessor And A Better Graphics Card If I Do This ?
-
-
Probably Not. I Don't Think You Should Get One Yet Until Other People Have And They Report If There Are Any Stuttering Issues. But Yes You Would Be Getting A Better Processor And Roughly Equal Graphics Cards.
-
You Will Be Getting A Better CPU And Graphics Cards For Sure. There Will Not Likely Be Any Stuttering As The ATI Cards Have Been Rarely Associated With Stuttering Thus Far.
-
hahahahah I knew someone would answer like that ;DDD

Megacharge Custom User Title
Yep saw that coming.. my advice would be to wait a while for some reviews of the refresh, you can always sell your current gen M17x later on and buy the refresh at a later date.
-
If it aint broke don't fix it.
-
To Answer Your Question, It's Your Laptop, You're The One Using It, You're Really The One Who Knows If You're Happy With It. So It's Kinda Hard To Decide For You. Do You Have Any Stuttering ?

This post is full of awesomeness.

What Are You Thinking??? Return It And Get The R2 With Gorgeous Rbg Display!!! Now!!!
-
But Did You Notice Any Big Red Spikes With The Dpc Latency Check ? If The Answer Is No, I Don't See Much Of A Point In Doing The "swap"
-
I've got the basic display and I find the quality quite good, what the response time with the LED, I heard they have about .2ms, is that right ? or am I mixing them with something else ?
-
YEAH IT ONLY BE AN EXTRA 100 I BELIEVE
-
Well If Thats Something You Really Want Then I Guess It Could Be Worth The Trouble
-
THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING BUT LIKE EVERYONE SAYS VIDEOGAMES RUN BETTER ON CORE I7 .. WHATS REALLY THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A Q9000 AND A CORE I7 720QM?
-
if I'm not mistaking, q9000 = 2 dual cores together
720qm = native quad core
if this is true then i7 overclocks higher and runs cooler -
DOESN'T MATTER FOR MOST GAMES; EVEN A CORE 2 DUO IS FINE FOR EVEN THE HIGHEST END GAMES THESE DAYS AS THE BOTTLENECK ISN'T THE PROCESSOR, BUT RATHER THE GRAPHICS CARDS. YOU WON'T SEE MUCH, IF ANY, REAL IMPROVEMENT IN GAMES GOING FROM QUAD CORE TO CORE I7. YOU MAY SEE A DIFFERENCE SWITCHING TO ATI 4870s, BUT IIRC, IT BENCHMARKS VERY SIMILARLY TO THE GTX 260M.
-
I JUST NOTICED SOMETHING AT ALIENWARE.COM IF U CHOOSE M17X THAT STARTS AT 1699 U HAVE TO ADD 700 TO GET THE ATI 4870 BUT IF U CHOOSE THE ONE THE STARTS AT 1799 CORE I7 , U ONLY ADD 300 TO GET THE ATI 4870

Since when people post with all letters capitalized?
-
Q9000 SPEED IS 2.0 GHZ AND 720QM IS ONLY 1.6 WHY THE STOCK SPEED SO LOW ON THIS I7 PROCCESOR
-
just noticed u have ur q9000 @ 2.53 speed.. nice job
-
SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
Thanks
And the best part is none of the 4 cores ever gets over 70C
-
lol
-
i didnt think it was possible the qx9300 clocks at that speed. i guess u got lucky with that chip
-
SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
You mean the Q9000? I heard people got it run @ 2.8 lol but I actually dont know who and on what laptop
I believe many Q9000 can run @ 2.53 but I think Im lucky with the temp. Around 65-66C in demanding games like Crysis is pretty low considered its heavily overclocked. -
clearly you never tried playing gta4 on a core 2 duo....
-
Just curious since it literally only became available a few days ago, how do some people have it to comment on already? Or are they just commenting on hypothetical hardware combinations?
-
I Was Just Playing Street Fighter Iv On My M17x I Was Only Getting 60 Frames Per Second All Settings Maxed Out.. Is This Bad For The Config I Have Q9000 Dual 260m ?
-

See if SLI is working on your game.
-
SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
Yeah. GTA 4 taxes the CPU but its a poor port in the first place. -
NO!!! 5870's yet???? I'd say wait for them or the 300M's if possible. But I would love to know if the RBG screen works with Core 2 version!
-
Do you guys have a Shift Key Twitch, Cuz Every First Letter Is Capitalized??! lol
-
lmao..Koshinn made my night. Honetly though get your money back and wait for a 58xxx series to be released in crossfire for the M17x, the combination of that plus an i7 will last your laptop years for gaming.

Do You Need Help Turning Off Caps Lock? Because Your Caps Lock Seems To Be Stuck On
To answer your question properly...They're two different types of processor with two different architectures. i7 processors at the same clock speed as Core 2 Duo processors are actually 20% faster. So the 720QM is the same as a Q9000 when it comes to quad core performance.
The power of the 720QM comes in turbo boost. When you're running a program using only one or two cores, the 720QM will overclock by a LOT and that program will run faster than it would on a Q9000.
BUT...It depends what games you play if it's for gaming. SOME games will benefit from the i7 processor. Most will run exactly the same.
I would return it though. Not so much for the i7 processor but the 4870s are about 20% faster than GTX 280Ms in most cases and that's a lot in the gaming world. -
It is indeed a very bad port, but then again, gta4 was made for a processor with 6 cores running at 3+ghz. I doubt future ports from consoles like the ps3 will be any easier to play on core2duo's or even low clocked core i7 cpu's which can only boost one or 2 cores to a higher clockrate.
-
The PS3 doesn't have an 8 core 3+GHz processor like many people think, it's a single 3.2GHz master processor controlling 3 vector processing cores.
Which is probably part of the difficulty in porting it.
Keep in mind that it runs fine on the Xbox 360 as well, which is why it loves quad cores so much. -
Lol everytime I read wikipedia I get a different explenation, previously it said it were 6 cores, now I read there are 8 of which 1 is shut down, so comming to the number of 7
-
I call wikipedia wantabie facts. It has little facts but overall you can not trust it.
-
Basically it has one master core and 8 of the vector cores. One vector core is not used and is there as a 'spare', just in case one breaks, from what I understand. One is reserved for the OS. So 6 are available for use by the games.
-
Actually wikipedia has the same error range as respectable encyclopedia's, about 3-5 errors per subject.
They advice us in using it for quick info but because its not always clear who wrote the articles, its forbidden to use it for a scientific paper.
Edit: My point is just that the ps3 cpu is way stronger than the current desktop cpu's, thats why ports like gta4 to a pc version are hard to make. -
I would rather go for the encyclopedia. Try this website you find it funny
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolo...o-use-Wikipedia-when-preparing-for-court.html
"The officer in charge told me he was advised by the CPS to use the website to find out about the weapon and he was about to present it in court.
"I looked at the information and some of it had substance and some of it was completely made up." -
Seriously, that looks like a lot of effort to type like that.
-
Wiki is a good place to start, you can back track on thier sources, but thats about all it's good for
-
Also make sure to get the LED screen.
-
Get a Sager or the Asus laptop don't make the same mistake i did :S
-
I love it when people post info like this, as to imply other systems are perfect.
-
Or that everyone has the same preference they do, or a lack of information to try and start a flame war.
-
Will the 720qm be enough for "hard core" gaming" video editing, 3dmax??
-
then how come it works perfectly and looks just as good on 360 which only has only 3 processors and why if its so much stronger are they going to drop it and put a different processor in the ps4
Should I Get Core I7 M17x?
