    All,

I need your help. I purchased a M17x about 3 weeks ago so im still in my 30 days return policy. - 15% restock fee. or should I get a M17? I paid 4,000 for my M17x and man, i can get a M17 for less. Should I do it or should I keep what I have? Currently own 9800GT's SLI.

    thanks

    Honestly, I would return it.

You can spec out a monster M17 AND probably get several hundred dollars back. You can put together an awesome system from between 3000 - 3500. It might be a little slower, but the Price/Performance ratio is significantly more favorable.

    just my 2 cents.

I would say yes with 4 grand you could get the M17 maxed out with that 15 restocking fee.

Another option is to attempt to return your M17X in trade for the M17 and see if they are willing to forgo the restocking fee and refund you the difference.

If you have to fork out the restocking fee, you will probably be coughing out even more for the M17 than your M17X.
    $4,000 *15% = $600.

$600 + 3549 (and including tax and shipping) may go up to close to 5 grand.

Yeah, I was just about to say that. Don't do it if you have to pay the restocking fee... And it's not like the m17x is a bad machine, it's pretty solid.

honestly, I don't see enough of a difference between the m17x and the M17 (besides some looks, and biometrics) to really warrant caring.

if given the choice now, I'd still go for the m15x, because of size. but between the 17" options, right now, I'd be staring at the M17 simply because of that option. doesn't mean I would hate-on a newly-purchased m17x because they released a slightly newer laptop shortly after....

9800M GT and xfire 3870's have similar strengths. I wouldn't worry about your purchase.

well, its sports a 2.5 ghz dual core. your right my machine is not bad at all. 800mhz fsb kills it compared to the M17.

Im very torn guys... If I trade it in and get a M17, I can upgrade to a 4870 mobile and a quad core cpu down the road. If I keep my M17x im afraid im stuck with what I have. I dont think there is a upgrade motherboard for this case. and I have a feeling there never will be.

I called alienware about the restock fee and the guy i talked with told me thats part of the process. (Jerk) thats sad. Way to want to keep a happy customer

Yeah...upgrading would be viable, since the m17 would be more future-proof

i think AW would be making the right decision if they make you pay for the restock fee as it is not due to any faults or anything with the system - expecting them to pay for you deciding you dont want the laptop anymore - i dont think any seller would be willing to pay for it.

    /agree

while we all want the latest and greatest, consider other real world purchases you make...
would you buy another car within 6 months just becuase its new? because they added leather instead of pleather?
would you install a new HVAC system just becuase the new offered unit has a white digital temp control instead of beige manual?

while not putting the OP or anyone else down, we as computer comsumers are fully aware that technology is ever evolving and will continue to do so if we buy today or tomorrow....

so instead of second guessing yourself and your m17x, use it and enjoy the power of an AW system...

Well Guys, I sent my M17x back. Im going for a M17. Tough decision actually and here is my thoughts

M17x- looks much better than the m17, the lighting is awesome... but still on the 800mhz fsb mboard. so its pretty much maxed out and the end of its life cycle....

M17- corners are cut for the quality but it does have the upgradability... quad and future upgrade cpu's.

If I knew alienware would have the ability to upgrade the mobo in a M17x then I would have kept it. Other than that here I go for a M17
