I would at least wait for the CES to pass at the end of the first week of January. We should have a better time frame of when the 5870's will be available on the market. Heck, we may even get an update from Alienware about the M17X refresh.

Agree....we have some extremely reputable people "hearing" about a Q1 release that were right before on things, i7 + 58 series will be something worth waiting for, I don't foresee many if any games utilizing the full extent of that combo for years.

Agreed! This hobby is a frustrating/expensive thing lol.

Gflyer1 it depends if you NEED it now or not? If not I'd say just wait. I bought mine ASAP cause I'm sick of travelling and being bored out of my mind lol.

You had to make a subject right when I was thinking of pulling the trigger myself. Curses!!! Actually, now I'm conflicted about ordering my M17x now or waiting. Probably not a bad idea to wait and see what's going to be offered with the new revision.

Time to play the waiting game...again!

As people have been saying if you just can't wait to get yourself a new laptop don't. However if you can spare a month for the refresh you should. (I might be wrong but I doubt it) the 5870 are goin to be quite a bit more powerful.

I'd definitly wait for the corei7 release in the alienware. Also, the badest time of the year to buy a laptop is februari. The best time to buy a laptop is:
    - April because they usualy release nes technologies then which make the price of the old ones drop,
    - and august-september because they want to sell as much as posible to the students who are looking for a laptop for their new schoolyear.

This is what I remember some kind of survey they did. But I doubt they are right about april (since a lot of new technologies like the new cpu's and gpu's will be released in the beginning of 2010).

Since your planning to buy a maxed out alienware I guess you'r planning to use it for more than 2 years. The new nvidia 3 series, or ati 5 series which are capable of running direct x11 should definitly be worth waiting for then.

Edit: I agree with the guy above with the zelda pic, if you can't wait, you don't. If you can, you should. Old technology gets cheaper and new technologie becomes available every few months.

Depends, new technology is going to be very price...."Very pricey", and it will be months until prices drop.
I jumped the boat, I got the warranty too, if anything bad happens down the road, at least I am covered, and if they discontinue the m17x in the two years and if the system is not functioning 100%,then I could always upgrade to a newer model if Dell ran out of parts for the older models.

Thats what I hear from M17 and ex Dell XPS owners.

    I'd wait.
Yes, true that new tech is coming out every time but there is new tech and new tech. I believe this time the difference between the 280/4870 and the new 58xx series (plus better cpu than qx for the M17x) is definitely worth the waiting.
    cheers

    @thecore762
You say new technology is very expensive. But if you compare an 'old' core2xtreme quad with a new corei7. You find the latter is not only powerfull enough, but also way cheaper. Alienware asks about 900-1000 € extra to place that core2xtreme quad in the m17...they shouldn't get their hopes up about me paying that much for 1 pc part.

I would wait for CES (since it is only 3 weeks away) just so you can get a better idea for the 5870 timeframe (if it gets announced) but I highly dobut Dell will refresh its M17x in the next 3-6 months. From a business stand pont, it doesn't make sense for them to refresh the series at the moment. Currently, M17x has no real competitor on the market with the current configurations that it offers. If they refresh now, they can put whatever price tag they want for something that won't be worth the extremely high price. Even though there are some rumors from "good sources" regarding a refresh during Q1 of 2010, I wouldn't bet on it. If you remember, the rumors surrounding the M17x release started about the same time last year but only 1-2 months before the actual release date (june 2009) the rumors became more certain and M17x got announced. Who knows, I might be proved wrong but based on how Dell have done things in the past, your wait might be longer than you think.

I pulled the trigger only because I needed a better computer overall. I thought why not get a computer that can also run my games. As for you unless you are in dire need of a computer wait until there's more info on the 5870's like mentioned above.

If you wait for CES, you will be waiting for summer since announcements and availability are two different things.

Usually a cycle or two after a new OS comes out is a good thing, though. Anyone who bought a computer right when Vista, XP, or 98 (I am old) can list the reasons. Windows 7 has been suprisingly trouble free for me.

waiting can be frustrating who knows how long you have to wait for a refresh and when you finally got it something new is going to come out why not give a shoot on this and when the new one come out just sell it and buy the new one :)

I just ordered one Saturday. I am NOT waiting any longer to be done with this netbook. It's been my only computer for ~8 months or so.

However, if I had another usable machine I would probably have waited. As others have said it really is up to your own personal timeframe.

While I would normally agree with your statement, I must now disagree.

Intel is officially launching the mobile i5's at CES on 1/7. If you recall, Dell had the M15x all ready for purchase when Intel officially released the i7's. Day and date - to the T

So, in this case, seeing as how CES is 2 weeks away, I would def wait :)

It could be interesting - depends on how well the integrated gpu on the die works.

If it can save power and decrease heat, then it will be worth it.

The i5's (some of them) have turbo and ht, so for what I do that is plenty. I don't need a quad ht :)

You might want to wait until we see what solution Dell rolls out for the DPC latency issue. Will it be a tattered, bloody bandage or a real fix? We'll see.

The downside to new technology besides the waiting is what bugs will crop up in the new releases? Early adopters take the highest risks. If you're young and like gambling, or old and have money to burn, then roll them thar dice!

The difference is that warranties don't protect against obsolescence.

:/ IMO it's a wash. I always buy the best I can buy, as soon as I can / as soon as I need it.

Glad to know this! I was wondering what it was like for i7 launch etc since I didn't follow it. I read that the i5 was already in production and launching on Jan7. So even if it's not in Alienware, I'd still love to see what Dell would use it in.

If you wait now your gonna continue to wait , everytime and you will eventually not buy anything. So go for it or wait till mid-2010~.
