EDIT A: New release of the Fallout 3 icon pack for the M11xR1 and R2. Added the battery icons. This should complete the set for the M11x. There is the tiniest chance that there could be an icon that I didn't work up for this mod given the fact that there were a fair number of icons in the original OSD application that just didn't seem like they were meant to be used. If anyone sees an old style icon show up then let me know. I'll mail you a stale cookie and make the appropriate fix.
Fallout 3 OSD for the M11x

Installation instructions
============================
!IMPORTANT! This modification has only been tested with the M11x OSD A04 and the latest BIOS for the R1 (A05) and the R2 (A03). If you do not have these installed on your system then DO NOT install this modified OSD executable.
Download OSD A04 and the latest BIOS for your model from here:
Dell - Drivers and Downloads
1. Ensure that you're running OSD A04 and the latest BIOS for your M11x model.
2. Download my OSD mod and unpack the AlienwareOn-ScreenDisplay.exe file to your desktop.
3. Start the Task Manager and END the AlienwareOn-ScreenDisplay.exe process.
4. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Alienware On-Screen Display\ and rename your existing AlienwareOn-ScreenDisplay.exe file to AlienwareOn-ScreenDisplay.exe.BAK
5. Copy the unpacked AlienwareOn-ScreenDisplay.exe from your dekstop to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Alienware On-Screen Display\ folder.
6. Double-click the file and you're all set.
From now on you'll be running with the modified Fallout 3 OSD icons. Should you ever wish to revert back to the stock icons, then simply stop the OSD process again, delete or rename the current exe and then remove the .BAK extenstion from the original. Essentially it's the same procedure as outlined above for switching back.
For support, please post questions to THIS thread.
!DSICLAIMER! I'm absolutely not responsible for any damages that may stem from the use of these modified OSD icons.

Version History

v 0.906
* Added battery state icons. Could not get alpha channel transparency to work in these, so I've added a square background that fits the rest of the pip-boy look. Booo BMP format.
v 0.801 (initial release)
* All display states, LCD brightness levels, volume levels, mute/unmute and radio enable/disable icons have been completed.
* For some reason battery state image resources in the original OSD application are saved as BMP images. As a result I'll be adding alpha channel info for those images. The hold up is that I'm working on trying see if I can manage to get PNG's to work as a replacement format. It's either that or I add alpha channels to all of the exported BMPs... Thanks OSD authors. Really appreciate the sloppy work.
EDIT B: I'll also be working on these for the M15x and M17x. Both models have quite a bit more icons, so they'll come after I've completed the M11x set.

Dude thats frikin rad! Right on! + rep! I demand to see this finished till the end
-
Cool. I like it (and want it
)
-
Amazing renderings! Take this as constructive feedback but maybe the icons could be stretched horizontally, as our screens are wide.
Great stuff. -
EDIT: Actually, I'm thinking they really could stand to be a little smaller than they are currently. -
Can anyone verify that there are or aren't any image files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Alienware On-Screen Display?
Based on others who have created new OSD icons for the M15x an other models there should be a sub-folder containing all of the images used and they should be .bmp. I've searched my entire system for bmp, png, gif, jpg, etc. and haven't been able to track down where these are.
On the M15x, this is what the files are named. I would think I should seeing something like this on our system too...Attached Files:

Thanks, Bily42. I'll track them down eventually.
-
It's a mystery; I also did a search throughout my m11x and cannot find them.
-
Yeah, I've spoken with some of the guys who have done modifications to the M15x and M17x stuff and theirs are in the OSD application folder where you'd expect.
-
awesome icon man, mind making a M15x version, hehehehhe
+rep great work -
-
As this is my favorite game franchise ever.
ME2 OSD Icons FTW!
You sir, are a true Jedi-Pimp -
Beautiful job on these, by the way. Simply beautiful job!
*edit* Sorry, I thought this was listed in the M17x forum, as I had both open. That is on my M17x, I will check my M11x later on this evening, after I return to my room. Apologies for the confusion. -
Hmmm... I don't have an OSD program folder on my system. My OSD application resides in C:\Program Files (x86)\Alienware On-Screen Display\
You've got an M11x, right? R1? R2? What version of the OSD are you running? -
Breaking Brian Notebook Evangelist
I agree with inap if you have time/ the know how please do make a m15x/17x version! Looking forward to those Mass Effect images.
-
You guys might get them before the M11x owners do. I seriously can't locate where they are on the 11x. :/

The M11x does not have the images stored in a folder. Instead they are stored in the actual executable. I discovered this using the beta version of ResourceHacker found here: http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/reshack_setup.exe
Once you have opened the OSD executable you pick PNG, and under each of the sub items is a PNG corresponding to an OSD image.
The good thing is it also lets you replace these resources, so I am assuming you will be able to do this slickie
EDIT:
Just tested and replacing works. To do this:
1. Open the OSD exe with Resource Hacker Beta (found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Alienware On-Screen Display)
2. Chose PNG, and find the picture you wish to replace.
3. Right click on it and choose "Replace Resource..."
4. Open the picture file you wish to use to replace (I tested using PNG only, others may work)
5. The resource Type is PNG, the Resource Name is name of the sub folder you chose under PNG (e.g. 139, 140, 141 etc) and the Resource Language is the name of the file under that sub folder (for all of mine it was 1028)
6. Click replace and then save the executable with the changes.
7. Kill the OSD process in task manager.
8. Optionally backup the old OSD exe and then replace the original one with your modified one.
9. Run the new exe.
10. PROFIT!!!

Thanks!! and +10 -
I was also pretty surprised at how small the executable was considering it had that many images in it.
I am looking forward to your FO3 themed OSD -
Could someone with an M15x or M17x let me know what the average size of the .bmp images are in their C:\Program Files (x86)\OSD\Icons folder please? They should all be fairly close in size. Thanks.
P.S. Am requesting this thread be moved to the parent AW forum since this really isn't specific to the M11x anymore. -
On m17x: 190x114.
Btw... you rock. -
-
Title's a bit mememe, but it'll do.
Oh, and thanks for moving it! -
-
^most are 43KB and a few are 64KB. (M17xr1)

Thanks, guys.

here is an upload of the original M15x icons:
Download ICONs.rar from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way
can't wait to see the finished product, great job bro. -
I AM SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS. Sorry for the all caps. Thought it was appropriate in this situation.
-
Can't wait until you get the M17x (R1) version done.
.......... (taps foot impatiently) ....... -
I'll eventually need the icon sets for each of the other models so that I can make sure I cover everything. No idea if the 17x R1 and R2 sets are the same. -
OK, I've finally carved some time out to start working on this again.
The M11x's new OSD complicates this a little by packaging all of their icons into the executable, whereas the 15x and 17x keeps it simpler by way of having them reside in a sub folder to the OSD application. Not a huge deal, but it does increase the amount to time it takes to test and repackage.
I need some feedback from other M11x users:
R1
1. Does Fn-F6 actually show an icon like you see when enabling/disabling the wireless radio? Or is there a dialog box asking for confirmation? Or nothing at all?
R1 or R2
2. Has anyone ever seen the following icon displayed?
I thought that by disabling charging in the BIOS that the Fn-F2 button would then display this one, but on my system (OSD A04) it's showing a dialog box that states "Charging Disabled". I'm not sure if the older version of the OSD did this as well. Maybe I'm misinterpreting the icon's use and it shows up during some other state?
There appear to be other battery state icons that don't have any purpose too. The ones I understand are the ones that are labeled "Battery Enabled" and show the current charge state of the battery (11 levels of charge). I suppose for now I'll just get those replaced, leaving the ones that don't appear to have a purpose in order to see if I can find what state triggers the old icons to be displayed... -
Breaking Brian Notebook Evangelist
Im not too sure about the "battery disabled" one, Ill give mine a recheck when I get home...

DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
On the R1 at least I know disabling the battery doesn't even work, it's almost a worthless button. There was a thread on it in the m11x section about that not working and I'm pretty sure the R2 M11x guys confirmed the same thing. On the FN+F6 if you use the Dell Hybrid Driver's it's not tied to the OSD, it shows a Nvidia icon that switches back and forth from Save Power and Increase performance. Hope this helps! If you need a pic of what I'm talking about PM me and I'll send some your way.
-
The Fn+F2 button on both the R1 and R2 is not intended to enable or disable battery charging, despite what the manual says. That was a typo that fell through the cracks. Probably was going to be a feature, but as it stands now it's simply supposed to show you the current charge state of the battery, which is somewhat pointless really.
Anyway, I should have a file up for M11x users to test drive some time tomorrow. The OSD features I've completed so far are:
Wifi/[BT] (Fn+F3)
LCD Brightness (Fn+F4/5)
Volume Mute/Up/Down (Fn+F7/8/9)
Working on all of the external display/LCD states. Tee-Dee-US!
The people who worked up the M11x OSD icons used PNGs for everything (good) except for the freakin' battery states, which are still using BMPs (not so good). What that means is that I'm going to have to tweak the battery states since the BMP file format doesn't support transparency like the PNG format does. Maybe if I add an alpha mask and export as a 32bit BMP... but then those files will be probably ~40% larger. Guess I'll be doing that for the 15x and 17x crowd anyway.
Bleh... sloppy work on the OSD authors part.
P.S. thanks for the confirmation regarding the R1's Fn+F6 not utilizing the OSD. -
the3vilGenius 3vil knows no fear
Can i add these icons in my customization thread?
-
Once that's solid, then I'll release what I have for the 15x and 17x crowd, although it's going to be an incomplete set for a bit.. They have a crap-ton more icons than the M11x, so I'll have to work up all new resources for those. -
Initial release for the M11x posted on 1st page.
-
Just tried slickie, seems to work great so farI tried everything except for external monitor icons etc. I love it! +rep

DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
Looks awesome man! +1 The only things I have to report are the battery icon you show being modded to FO3 style doesn't work, it's still the original OSD icon. And absolutely nothing shows up now on the LCD-LCD/HDMI-HDMI icons. But great work! Thanks!

-
looking super awesome bro, can't wait to see the M15x and M17 icons.
-
cool dude thanks looks good.
-
Ok, I've added the battery icons. Since they're BMP format in the original OSD app I was forced to stick to that as well. That means no transparency. In any event this should complete the set for the M11x (R1 and R2).
New download for v 0.906 is on the newly edited 1st post.
Let me know if you find anything amiss. -
Could an M17x owner zip up their icon folder and make that available to me so that I can start work on those?
-
-
Thanks, XIII.
Yeah, if anyone knows that there's a difference between the 17x R1 and R2 then let me know. -
any update on this????
