    Hey there,

A couple of days ago I ordered a smartbay HDD kit (which means the smartbay hdd drive without a hdd). I'm wondering though if I can insert the 500 gb hdd, because the height of the drive is 12,5 mm.

The drive I'm talking about is the Hitachi Travelstar 5K 500.

    Hello mate

Im pretty sure it only takes the standard 9.5mm hard drive. Not a problem though as samsung make 500gb 9.5mm laptop drive. The spinpoint M6

    Hello Again

Its not on general sale either in the UK but is available to OEM builders. Have spoke to AW regarding getting it from them and have been told will be available in the next few days.

Yeah, AW US/Canada already has the option for a 500GB smart bay, so Europe should get the 500GB drive soon

Just called AW. He says it is possible to put a 12,5 mm in it.

Edit: the optical drive has an height of 15 mm, so there would be like 2,5 mm extra space for the casing...

The smart bay is your bluray drive yes. it should slot out, it can be replaced with a hard drive or battery. as to a smart bay hard drive, you had to select it as you bought the laptop, dunno where you could get it now

I think i might be able to buy the hdd smart bay from alienware after sales. if not i will have to source this out refast.

You can buy the smart bay cage from AW (i.e. the hard drive holder) and buy the hard drive yourself (so you can get exactly what you want, cheaper)

Or you can buy a full smart bay HDD package, if you don't have any special drives in mind
