Woot! My first post. :) Hello everyone. Before I ask my question Im going to tell you a quick story (not to bore you). I sold my soul to alienware last year and bought an m5550. Well It was broken out of the box and stayed broken for a year even after visiting the AW depo 6 times (That's a 1,200 point inspection :p ) Anyway alienware after a year finally decides "Hey it might be broken..." They gave me credit + $100 because of my trouble. Thats good I guess. Well I ordered an m15x with specs: 2.5Core2Duo, 8700mGT, 4GB of Mem, etc. Im very nervous about having problems with this machine. Alienware says the over heating problem had been only happening to 5% of their customers. That seems to be everyone who writes in this forum! Here are my questions:

    1) What should I do when I get the system? BIOS update? FX update? (I heard it damages the system?)

    2) Will I experience Down clocking with the 8700mGT?

    3) Will I experience Down clocking with the Core2Duo? Since its not an extreme?

    4) Any other problems that I should know of?

    I've heard these problems...

    1) Cracking. (Issue Fixed I was told?)
    2) Touch Buttons (Issue Fixed I was told?)
    3) DownClocking with CPU and GPU? (Not Fixed?)

Anything else? Thanks for your time.

I think I will need prayers with this laptop. Everyone go and pray for me now! Oh and if you want to send money my paypal account is... ;)

The 8700 will not downclock, it's only the 8800GTX

Downclocking was hardly ever an issue, if at all, for the 8700M GT (though it did happen). Despite that, if your laptop doesn't come with the X32 BIOS version then it would still probably be a good idea to upgrade (but you're in less of a hurry to do so than if you had the 88). Also there have never been any downclocking problems with the CPUs (though they do downclock as per normal laptop CPU power savings)

The cracks above the ethernet port seem to be somewhat sporadic (I don't have them) so if they haven't fixed them already then it will be random whether or not you get them. When you say touch buttons, if you're referring to the problem where they deactivate after going into sleep, that problem has not been solved.

There has been CPU downclocking GRB. Wasn't it newfiejud that had that problem? Hell, even I slightly have that problem, but it only happens in 1 game and I know why.

I have also read about these issues you have raised and I was under the impression that they had been fixed when I placed my order. With the delays some people have had in getting their m15x over the last couple of months, we hope all the bugs have been sorted out by now, and also we won't need to be fiddling with the BIOS on a new machine, for things Alienware have been aware of for some time.

All eyes on this forum, hoping some new owners will give us the latest news. :D
