Ive been trying to get my head around G cards for sometime. I thought I'd cracked it, then I was informed that a GTX260M isnt as good as a regular 260 one. This is a bummer as thats the one I ordered. I thought I'd done my due diligence but this is my first LT.
So now I know there are the 260 &the 280, so where does the 4850 fit into the equation and why wasnt it available in the UK when it is in the US?

GTX280m > HD4850m > GTX260m
Though they're all fairly close.
What do you mean by "a regular 260 one"? -

He means the desktop GTX 260.

The GeForce GTX 260M and 280M are based on the G92b architecture like 9800+ desktop video cards. So yeah, they are nowhere close in performance to Desktop GTX 26x, 28x or 29x cards. Yes, Nvidia's naming scheme is extremely misleading.
They are still in the top end spectrum from what's available for laptops, however. -

The 4850 has been found to be the equivelant in performance to a 280M in most cases and above the 260M in most others.
The most powerful laptop graphics card on the market is theoretically a GDDDR5 4870 card, however no laptop actually uses one yet.
A 'regular' 260 is a desktop card and there's no way it'd fit into your laptop -

just to offer a comparison between the laptop and desktop world,
here is my HTPC with a single stock 4890: GPU score of 13460
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dmv=1359241
And my laptop at full tilt got a GPU score of 11996 (link in sig)
The 4890 is about 10% better than a desktop GTX 260 (Core 216) -
Yes Nvidia´s naming scheme is misleading I know what I speak of since I own a desktop MSI GTX 260 OC, factory overclocked that is, currently running at 712/1488/1100 very good GPU.
Though Nvidia will probably later maybe with a newer core fit a GTX 260 into a notebook, but as it is now not at all.
These cards don´t run hot either, mine idles at around 45 degrees and maxes out full load in Crysis at around 63 degrees.
So the best G card is?
