Sorry if this isn't the right section. So I ordered an alienware 18 back on the 16th and just today I was itchin to get the laptop with a better CPU. So what happens is I contact dell chat and tell the lady that I want to change my order. So I know that she has to cancel the order and then re order with my changes. So she asks for confirmation to cancel the order and asks me to check my email for the cancel confirmation which i got, huzzah! That's all fine and dandy and expected the price of the upgraded computer to be remotely close to the price my original sales representative gave me, $3384 including tax. But no, the lowest this new lady would go was $3530! Heck no I said (in my mind) and she said she would let me decide and call me later. Well I disconnected my home's phones to avoid her, I ain't going to pay $200 more on something I could have gotten cheaper just a few days ago.

So my question is, is my order actually canceled? Will I get my money back? My original order number is no longer valid but when I search my orders under my customer ID I see an order that has the status "Changed" however I cannot manually search that order up. Its estimated ship date is 1/1/0001. Also it doesn't have the page of the process of the order with the pre-production, in production, etc stages. I mean I have the cancel confirmation email. I'm afraid of calling dell again in thoughts that they will inspect and then sneakily put the item back into production. When I canceled my order it was in production. And lol it's funny how if I ask normally to cancel my order all the reps say it can't be done yet the rep from today does it in mere minutes no questions asked basically.

$150 for a CPU upgrade is pretty standard. I have no idea if your computer is actually cancelled, but I'd bet it's being held for your decision.

    Maybe ask for $3500 exactly?

The changed status could be related to the cancellation of the order. You have to face them for sure, why not now. Haggle them to reduce the price or say you will go buy another laptop

My original order with the 4700mq was $3,163 with tax included. $3,520 was the price for a mere upgrade to a 4800mq!

@sweethoney I guess...but I'm afraid that if I attempt that and refuse that they will just put the order back into production, ship it and force me to pay a restocking fee to get money out of me. I already tried to haggle with one of the higher ups.

Look for what discount they gave you exactly, and just ask for it again, imo. That is a crazy increase...

Yea I tried to ask for the same kind of discount but the lady told me "Discounts vary on weekly basis, the most I can give you according to my supervisor is a $100 discount." Which is BS because this has all happened in the same week, 5 days apart from each other.

Oh, then get a different rep. Their discounts aren't REALLY according to their supervisor, and they can get approval for larger discounts than standard rather easily.

I could try yes, but at this point I'm just not really interested anymore. I think I'll just call and use my cancellation email confirmation as leverage to tell me if my order is canceled or not, somehow.

Haha so i called Dell's regular number at the top of their page and the automated robot asked what I wanted and i answered "Order Status". It must have read the number I was calling from because it said the order that i placed has been cancelled! I recorded the robot saying it too, so with the email too I've got all the evidence I need if I don't get my money back in a reasonable time.

You should get it back soon, if it was via credit card. Maybe 5-10 business days.

As far as i know Dell UK procedure, actually Dell wont take your money untill your order status show shipped, money stays within your account but your not allowed to use that fund as it reserved. Now when Dell canceled your order those reserved fund releases for you, even on account statement it wont show that you ever those fund paid to Dell.

I hope one can assume this goes the same for the US.

@true_karma Thanks for sharing your experience, really re-assuring. Although I'm curious, how were you able to pull off those cancels?

Second that question. I'm curious about that too. Can you actually cancel an order while it's in production?

Well you can cancel while In production, but again it's depend on which rep. you ask to do so. Cosz order status like Order approved or Pre-Production changes within a day or two, most time spend In production. Even your order status shows that your system is in production but actually its not(production only take a day or two). So at beginning of In production, yes you can cancel it.

Thank you Peter for answering. I ordered mine on July 11 with a rep and it immediately showed as in production since July 12; the EDD is July 31, which is consistent with the builder's EDD on the website. But today I check the builder on the website, it still shows that if you order today, the EDD is still July 31. That's why I'm wondering if I can cancel mine and try again with a different rep.

This is not my business but still why you want to cancel order? YannC Well from my experience with Alienware, ive received system about a week before actual EDD. Hence you may receive it within next week.

It's just that the discount I got wasn't that great, I settled with the price because I want to get it before early August. And since if I reorder it today I can still get it before that time, I'm wondering if I can do that and save several hundred dollars more. BTW, EDD on the website as of now is still July 31...

Well you can talk with any Dell rep to cancel order, on first go if agent wont allow it (as usually say its already in production) than try call again to talk with another rep if again you get same answer. Well than your order ready to ship with in 1 -3 days.

Many times they will go ahead and send it anyway. Once you receive it just call them for a return paid label.
While on the phone they will most likely offer you another discount to keep it. They sent me a m11x with out bluetooth
once and to keep it offered 100.00 off I took it and bought a bluetooth module on ebay for I believe 22.00.
They are good about taking it back if you don't want it. It will show up on the Dell Outlet store and make
    someone very very happy.

I returned one for a crack in the screen the clear plastic. The other a m17x because I canceled the order and they shipped it anyway
and I did not want it. It had 3D and I decided I did not care for wearing glass's when playing.

I see, so the second m17x had no problems and it was canceled and they let you return it without any fees, at all? How did you cancel your second one?

If you look at the top of dell's website, there is currently a promotion called free shipping and easy returns in blue. It states that you may return your system within 30 days of invoice for a full refund. They will not charge you for return shipping and will even waive the restocking fee. Pretty awesome.

Edit: Ah I found it. Well, that's pretty awesome indeed. The thing says just send it back, does that mean I can just reject the laptop when the ups truck comes? How long would it take to then arrive back at dell, since the refund is only valid 30 days after invoice.

I called and told the rep to cancel the order then I also called Dell Preferred to make sure they knew it was a credit purchase. Then it pop's up at my door
and I called and asked for a prepaid label to return it. No problem they took it back. They really do not make a big deal out of returns. You have a grace period
to return it in anyways no questions asked.

I would not reject the package as the Dell FAQs said not to. Just accept the package and sign for it and then call for a return. It's pretty simple and they are easygoing. I returned my alienware 14 recently because I wanted to buy the one with an upgraded GPU. They asked for my reason and I just complained about battery life not lasting as long as I wanted. They then issued me a return label. Very easy process. Return shipping takes about 5 business days from California to Tennessee. Not sure where you are from. May be quicker if you are in the easy coast.
