Does he use his control panel to tweak sound though? Me personally, i am running to a 27 inch monitor via HDMI and the sound is coming out of the headphone jack to a speaker system. Upon booting with the HDMI plugged in is where i run into issues. Ask your friend to see if his control panel will show up after booting with the hdmi plugged into an external screen.

I will go over there tomorrow and check it out. I don't think he messes with the Sound Blaster control panel. Heck, I don't mess with that control panel. I have no need to. Changing the equalizer settings around all the time...seems tedious. But to add something constructive to this issue, have you tried disabling the HDMI audio when you plugged into the monitor only? You shouldn't need HDMI audio when you're using the external speakers thru the headphones jack. That may be what is stop the sound conflict.

Ran the computer all weekend, powered down, put to sleep and had no problems with the sound. I even had it hooked up to the TV playing sound through HDMI.
So the replaced motherboard seems to have fixed it. I guess maybe there was a production problem possibly and the sound card is just not getting initialized on some of the boards.

I went and tested out my Neighbor's R4. We went from booting up with the HDMI connected and the sound set to the internal speakers to the DP with the sound set to the internal speakers, and no problemas.

Hmmm well i guess i am wrong. I had my motherboard replaced as well, and i can confirm that doing what i do allows the control panel to come up. For me the control panel equalizer settings make my sound considerably better, so that's why i use it. Where can i disable the hdmi audio?

Not necessarily. I believe it's like Pellinore said. It was some sort of production defect which the internal sound cards were defunct and changing out the motherboard fixed it.

In the sound control panel, under playback devices. If you click on the HDMI audio, and right-click, you can select disable.

So I was playing BioShock Infinite, and suddenly at a point my game crashed. I had to restart the laptop to get it going again. So... Afterwards when I got into windows again, I noticed that my sound wasn't working. Checked around to get it re-enabled and noticed that it's missing from my device manager and it simply ceased to exist?

    Any suggestions would be great:thumbsup:

Uninstall the driver via control panel - add remove program. Then install the windows 8 driver instead - it seems to be far more stable and works great. This is only if you are using an m18x r2.

Mine does this from time to time...it is really annoying. In my case switching to the integrated GPU usually brings it back. It is an irritating bug.....I am waiting for a fix but have yet to see one, but on the bright side it does not happen that often.

Install the windows 8 driver on windows 7, it is just an updated driver and all works fine.

I hope someone's keeping an eye on this thread...I've got a bit of computer know-how, but not enough to fully understand everything posted here. I have this exact issue, and it's getting a little old having to restart my computer to get the audio to work. I've tried manually installing the windows 8 driver (which just gives me a series of smaller files as opposed to allowing me to install via one .exe like I'm used to), so I don't know if that would work but I can't seem to figure it out. I've manually installed the previously recommended driver from 09/2012, and I've tried uninstalling the driver completely and allowing the system to automatically install them on restart. The problem persists. The reps at Dell can't seem to figure out how to fix it, and it's getting pretty old. Can anyone recommend an action based on this troubleshooting?

Anyone with issues, I had them on my M17x R4, main times it would 'glitch out' to either no sound or full volume tinny sound. I sometimes can replicate the circumstances on a call on skype as soon as the video and audio start the sound glitches out. Otherwise its random when there has been no sound playing and I start a youtube video after a system sleep or hibernate.

Go to your taskbar, right click on the sound icon, playback devices, right click speakers, properties, advanced.

On this page, 'default format - select the sample rate and bit depth to be used when running in shared mode.' Change it to something like 16bit and 44100 hz (cd quality), it is arguably the most compatible format. You can slowly up it if you want.

Also disable exclusive mode and disable audio enhancements (soundblaster control panel affects still work though).

I havent had any audio glitches so far. I did notice the slight drop in quality, but I don't notice it anymore.

    Hello!

I just received my Alienware M17X R4 and there is no sound. When I opened Device Manager, I didn't see any sound cards other than Intel's HD driver (I have sound blaster recon 3Di sound card). So I downloaded the latest drivers from Dell, uninstalled the existing drivers and tried to install the new ones.

It came back with the following error message "Setup is unable to detect a supported product in your system"

the weird thing is that the sound can start working again for some reason and then just go out again.

    Any help is greatly appreciated...

Edit: I'm using Windows 7 64-bit, and right now I don't see ANY unidentified sound cards at all in device manager. I got the latest BIOS from Dell "Voyager MLK(M17R4) BIOS A11 for win7"

Yep time to call dell tech support, it will be easier to play dumb and let them do remote diagnostics. Just say no sound coming and you have no idea what to do.

I have learnt hard way, playing dumb actually works better with dell tech support and gives me less stress too.

Dell will cover the warranty as long as tag reflects the warranty is active. Also you might need previous owners details or at least a receipt from the store to show to dell that you bought it and its not stolen.

I just had the same issue with sound card but that happened when windows update got installed. After trying everything else, I switched between igpu and 7970m and it got detected and running fine for last hour or so.

Just to let you know I did have an audio 'glitch' even with those settings. Usually after my computer has been running for a few hours and I get a skype call, the skype audio not always, but sometimes kills my audio.

Might be worth disabling the auto volume adjustments in skype.

Applying Windows Updates was the first mistake, LOL. Turn that garbage off, or you'll be fixing all sorts of broken things. Manually update Windows Defender and Malicious Software Removal tools and skip almost all of the rest. Most of it is trash that will, sooner or later, end up hosing your machine. When you do the manual updates, hide the stuff you never want to see again and it will keep the list smaller and easier to manage. When you see an update that says it fixes issues in Windows or improves performance, and you are not experiencing issues that need to be fixed or performance problems, steer clear of those especially. If those updates do what they are supposed to do, you'll find out because people will be posting how great they are in forums. Otherwise, let all the noobs be the Windows Update guinea pigs.

Okay... Heres the problem I am having with my sound..Iam running Duel monitors (laptop) and one out of the HDMI port, only had a couple problems, so did the usual close the lid and start back up, works fine. Now i can't get any sound to work while my other monitor is plugged in, the usual shut the lid technique isn't working so I got into these forums for some help im not super computer literate, so im not confidante on which drivers to replace or even what to do... that is my biggest problem right now. My next problem is in the AlienWare command center program and under the Alien touch settings, i dont have anyting under there so i can't do anything for my touch pad while using a mouse.. But any help maybe a walk through on how to find the right driver would be fantastic so i can replace or fix it, or w/e is needed

Undertaker here. After dealing with this for a year I finally called support. The tech is coming to replace my motherboard. I was desperately trying to avoid this but with Windows 8 the system is freezing every 5 hours and when I reboot the sound is gone.... *sigh*

    Hello,

I am having an problem with my m18x R2, as it's an audio problem. Whenever I have my headphones connected to either audio ports, there would be no sound coming out of my headphones but sound would come out of my speakers as if the headphones weren't even connected to the laptop at all.

Does anyone know or help me with this problem? I have called Dell about this and being scheduled for a Motherboard replacement, but I want to see if I am able to fix the problem before doing this.

I am running the latest audio driver from Dell driver page "6.0.100.2033" "Creative Sound Blaster Recon3Di"

    Thanks,

    Danny

Have you checked your SoundBlaster control panel settings? Did you do a complete uninstall of the SB drivers (Go into Device Manager & remove/unistall), and program (Using Programs and Features), reboot computer and reinstall? If yes, proceed to below...

Right click on the speaker icon in the taskbar, and select "Volume Control Options". With your headphones plugged in, make sure the boxes are checked for both headphones and speakers, and that the box for "All devices currently playing sound" is checked.

Close the box, and right-click on the speaker icon again. This time select "Playback Devices" and make sure that you can see the "Communications Headphones" or equivalent. Right click again on "....Headphones" and make sure "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" are checked.

If "Communications Headphones" isn't on the screen, selecte "Speakers / Headphones" and do the same.

Put your headphones on, right click on both(if available) and select "Test". Can you hear anything?

If it still fails, right click again and select "Properties". Go through the tabs and make sure your levels aren't turned down or shut off for headphones. Go to "Enhancements" and uncheck them all (default setting). Then finally move to the "Advanced" tab and select "Test" again.

    Got anything?

Hey Michael.konor thank you very much for replying and about the situation the problem hasn't been resolved with the suggestions you have posted. Once I have uninstalled everything sound blaster and reinstalled the driver was detected but no sound was produced at all as I had to system restore to get my sound back. Any other suggestions you might have ? When i connect my headphones in the dolby pops up but i don't see "headphones" or anything similar as in playback devices i srr speaker and digital output. Thanks

Ps when I connect my hdmi I get picture but no sound to the laptop or tv

    Hi mates.
I'm using the Dell's drivers, (2033) updated to 2040 on Windows 8 and fortunately I have no software problem.
    But I have a question...on the m18x main site, i found:

Creative Sound Blaster Recon3Di High-Definition 5.1 Audio with THX TruStudio Pro Software (Standard)
    2.1 Speaker configuration with Subwoofer
    Audio Powered by Klipsch®
7.1 Digtial Audio out using HDMI out connection or S/PDIF Optical port.

But when I try using the s/pdif port, my receiver (an "old but gold" pioneer sx-315) only receive PCM sound.
Is the recon3di able to pass 5.1 sound through the s/pdif port? On the creative panel I see only "Play stereo mix to digital output" and no mention about DTS or DDL.
    Thanks and the Best Regards

Every now and then when I restart my computer all the sound is away and it tells me that there is no sound device found on my computer and I need to restart the laptop 3-5 time or sometime even 20++ in order for it to come back.

    Any clue?

And when I try and install the sound driver, I get:

Setup is unable to detect a supported product on your system.
