Just wanted to chime in and share my experience.

I have 2 M18x R2's, both with almost identical specs.
The first one never had any issue with dissapearing sound.
The second one had from the start, that's when i found this thread and updated the driver to the latest one available from MS and the problem didn't resurface for almost 2 months.

When the soundcard dissapeared i tried Ubuntu for fun and the soundcard is not seen by the OS either, so this must be a hardware issue/glitch.

    Is there any permanent fix?

No, other than finding a motherboard with a fully functional chip. I tried in OS X and Linux and the chip is flaky, sometimes detected, sometimes not.

    Replacing the chip?

Assuming this is a fault with the chip and not somewhere else.

Looking for some advice here, i have a 2015 alienware 17r2 with 970m. Problem i am experiencing is sound related. It will do a sudden pause then skip of sound and also the video weather it be in a game or watching a youtube video. Its very brief but is very distracting. Happens every 5 minutes or so. Any advice or similiar experiences? I have all the latest drivers from Dell support site and have Win 10 64bit installed. Thanks for any help

    Incl Win8.1... :)

M18xR2 check if it solves/mitigates the sound issues.

Update: messed up sound frequencies, better revert to previous version...I'll try to update the mod as soon as possible.

Hey, Brother @j95 thanks for this. Works great on my M18xR2... bloatware and all. So far no obvious issue with frequencies. Under what conditions are you experiencing a problem? Maybe I can replicate it if you can clarify.

When I have that problem before I just delete from device manager audio device and all drivers, restarting system and all appear in good way.

It's soft issues wich quite common for m18x

Left speaker mid-high frequency distortion, including previous versions, but I'm not sure what caused this...if you have spare speakers try to replicate M18xR2 issue...besides drivers, Creative included all necessary IVY AW installation files...possible fixes? CPL "Device not supported" is intentional...request.

It sounds good on this M18xR2 using internal speakers. No distortion and I am not finding any "Device not Supported" errors. Are you encountering that with external speakers and headphones?

    @Mr. Fox updated Recon3Di Win7 version Sound_Blaster_Recon3Di_Win7_M17xR4_M18xR2.7z

v1.01.07 fixed the sound suddenly disappearing? Sound quality is better than any previous driver package, I'm currently testing the right speaker, probably not related so I'll re-upload two versions for each laptop.

Thank you, bro. I already packed up the M18xR2 for storage last night, but I will get it out again later today and apply the second driver mod you attached today. Great work, as usual. And, yes... I have never had any more issues with disappearing sound since I started using the newer drivers mentioned earlier in this thread.

Did you happen to see the M18xR2 BIOS mods/updates that @Swick1981 and @Raidriar have been doing? The mods work awesome. In theory, the same updates should be totally doable for your M17xR4.

    sorry for bumping this thread
With 1607 windows 10 anniversary update, the recon3di is completely disappear, leaving a exclamation mark in device manager. My only remaining sound is from my TV via HDMI, no sound from laptop speaker or 3.5 jack. Any effort re-installing the driver are all failed! Good job MS, good job indeed.
    Any solution for this guys?

Maybe it would be best to just roll back to your old version of Windows.

Does anyone have recurring issues where if you put the computer to sleep and then wake it up, the Creative Audio:
    • Has the dreaded red x in the speaker icon, meaning it doesn't work at all
    • No red x in the speaker icon, but there's still no audio anyway
    • Or, when you plug in headphones to the headphone jack, the audio still plays through the internal speakers?
I love my m17r4, but its audio is the worst POS I have ever encountered in a high-end, expensive laptop.

    I've tried these drivers: Sound_Blaster_Recon3Di_v1.01.09_Win10_8.1_M17xR4_M18xR2

    And these ones: Audio_Driver_K32CX_WN32_1.1.9_A03

Both results are pretty much the same. Not sure who to blame for this? Creative or Microsoft or both?

At this point, I don't even care for fancy DSP effects. It would be nice just to have a laptop that could reliably work all the time and switch audio output from internal speakers to headphones.

It used to happen all the time with my M18xR2 until the drivers I and @j95 posted about earlier in this thread. Those more or less cured it. Creative's fault for making trash and Dell's fault for not correcting their own bad judgment. They should have recalled all M18xR2 and M17xR4 and replaced their motherboards with an identical product with RealTek audio.

One difference. I never use sleep for any laptop. I turn it off when I'm done, turn it on when I need to use it. It always happened to me from a cold boot. I would put the machine to sleep, wait about 3 seconds and wake it up to fix the problem. And, it worked almost ever time (like 19 out of 20 times).

Hey, so I've had the m17x r4 for a long time now, and have been dealing with the sound card not being detected (mirroring what i'm seeing in the thread). I installed the drivers @j95 posted however i couldn't install the drivers, only the software. It's been a problem on and off now, it'd seemingly magically fix itself but now it's not coming back and i don't know what to do. Any driver I try to install fails with the error 'The product could not be found', or something along those lines. I'd really really appreciate some help here, thanks a bunch!

Hi! Try to get rid of old installation residual files by an acient software that helped me:

    Driver Sweeper 3.2.0

Or power off/on till it re-appear again (but I prefer first method ^_^ ).

Just curious, anyone had issue with AMD cards, or only Nvidia?
I'm selling off the M18x R2 with 7970M CF and while cleaning it up i've realized that no matter what i do the sound never dissapears :O

You got a good board, the issue exists with both AMD and NVidia cards due to a defective sound chip. You are luck you got a good board, many of them floating out there have flaky sound chips.

Yes, you are definitely lucky. In the worst case scenario, here is what "not lucky" can look like. Yes, the audio chip amplifier (shown in photo) actually caught on fire. No joke. Motherboard was an in-warranty replacement that died just after the warranty ran out. I got a replacement chip for it and it is still in service. Thankfully, nothing else was harmed other than that one chip. Replacing that amplifier chip that burned didn't correct the problem of random audio loss though. It was "as good as new" with respect to that problem, LOL.
