    i had another thread about this in the m17x area, but i think this is a general problem that everyone might be able to help me with.

    i plugged in my tv via hdmi and put computer to sleep, now unplugged there is no sound in speakers. headphones work fine, and i can't get the tv to work with m17x hdmi anymore either. i reinstalled a bunch of drivers, didnt work. i did a clean install of win 7 this morning, put all drivier (i think) back on and nothing.
    under the sound control panel, it says hdmi is "ready" where i think it should say "disconnected" or something liek that. i have disabled it, uninstalled drivers and disabled and enable them too. i have unplugged and took battery out and held power button for 25 (5 extra for my fast couting) and still no sound. everything looks ok and says i have sound, even test i ran say there is no problem but my ears beg the differ.
    is it possible they got disconnected? i didn't move the laptop at teh time, but have since then (this happened 3 or 4 days ago).
    im all out of ideas.

    Did you try the power drain trick?

    i'm not aware of that one. what is it and how do you do it? sounds like you just run the battery down... right now im just plugged in without the battery even in.

    The trick I think himesh is referring to is;
    turn your machine off, unplug the laptop, remove the battery, hold the power button down for 20 seconds (and release),
    then replace the battery, plug in and power up.
    this process drains the power out of your laptop and frequently repairs many small issues. -h-

    yeah, i am too. i can't find anything like this on google. and i have asked my friend who worked as a tech help guy at a local computer store and he told me to do what i alread knew... maybe i will call dell and ask them to fix/replace it. but thats a pain in the butt... it's not like i need the speakers, i have my headset and external speakers at home, just i cant share sounds with people when im not at home... it would just make me feel better for my amazing laptop to be fully functional.

    i am considering buying a m15x or m17x, and was browsing for problems and saw this thread.
    i was wondering if you have fixed the audio problem or not.
    if you are still facing this problem i have a suggestion that might help.

    - do the power drain thing, then re-flash you firmware.

    i hope there are firmware downloads at dell site.
    this may not work but it doesnt hurt to try.

    one of my friends experienced the same problem, it was an windows update that messed the speakers up. just restore windows till last time it worked and you should be good to go. Im not sure if it is the correct solution, but try it, it might work :D

    Try going to your sound devices and setting the internal speakers to default. I think it's right click sound icon then devices. Had this issue a lot with area 51 m15x.

    thanks for the advice. none of them worked, but thanks anyways lol. i had already tried the power drain twice, did a clean install of win 7 so no updates at all. reset speakers to default. installed all new drivers, and nothing. the firmware... not sure about that though... is that a fancy word for driver? if not, please explain how i would do this. i am planning on having dell come out and fix it soon. other than this one problem, everything is great though, i suggest buying it madoon, 9.9/10 on my scale.

    what i ment by firmware, is bios update.

    Edit: go to dell support page, find drivers for your laptop there should be a bios download. download that and use it.

    @op
    Try the ati hdmi driver from here : Realtek

    Make sure to uninstall your hdmi driver from device manager and check the delete driver box. Then reboot and run the new driver setup. This is the only hdmi driver that performes well for me.
