I stumbled across some pretty fantastic guides for speeding up vista online today. I thought I'd share.

    Guide is here

What I really liked was the speed up boot section.

Be sure to read all the warnings!

    Enjoy :)

Try fixing the second link. You've got one too many "http" in there. :p

    BTW, is this x64-specific?

Not that I know of... most of the settings are universal, not just x64 or x86. Though it is done by people from vista64 somethingorother.

many props to the fact that there are 64-bit oriented communities cropping up... Something I'm very happy to see coming down the pipeline.

But I digress. most of the settings for x64 are the same for x86 (with the exception of program-specific stuff when dealing with x86 applications in the x64 environment)

Nice, reps for this. I liked the registry edit for multiple server requests.

yeah, that one is awesome. upping the cap to it's max. it's an XP hack too.

Another personal favorite, was reducing (or eliminating) the QoS reserved bandwidth.

sped up my gigabit ethernet transfers to my server (windows server 2003, which the edit also works on), by ~20% (as expected).

so now I get 60-75MBps on file transfers, rather than the consistent 40MBps I got before. :)

    Great find Mystik.

Maybe this should be put in the Windows OS section? :)

Yeah, I set mine in the registry to only reserve 9%. Didn't want to unknowingly interfere with anything that current uses it.

Yes, I was kind of wondering why it's not ... it would get more use there.

is there a similar registry edit to speed up the read/copy speed from the optical drive? mine drops to under 1mb/s for long copying procedures, like some buffer/cache is filling up...

have you tried enabling advanced performance on the drive?

seriously. google it. I'd throw up some pictures and tell you how but I don't really have time right now.

Advanced performance should help with ensuring the drive is running with the DMA and everything it needs to perform. I'd also look into whether any type of acoustic management software is running (usually in the tray)... which can put the drive into "quiet" modes, reducing the functional speed of the DVD drive.

    just a thought.

    try this:

Goto Device Manager, and Sort by Connection.

now the challenge... FIND YOUR DVD-ROM drive

the IDE Drive controller, that it's connected to, select properties... you should be able to see this:

    Enable DMA on all drives.

DMA... is a good thing ;)

*this image was taken from my server (the only genuine windows machine that I currently have on).. so the image is actually taken from Windows Server 2003, not Vista. fyi. some elements might appear different.
