I'm trying to decide if I am going to order my machine from Dell or XoticPC. I know XoticPc doesn't offer much in terms of a student discount, but does Dell? The lack of tax from xoticpc really is a nice thing though.

Dell gives a small discount and an Xbox or a $200 Dell giftcard

I thought that was only on specific laptops? If thats true, that's a pretty nice addition.

As far I know, as long as you call a representative when you are about to order and tell them that you are a student they will give you a discount. That is how it worked for me. (M17x)

Figure out what you would pay for a system from Xotic. Then call Dell and tell them you're willing to buy right now if they can meet that price INCLUDING TAX. Ask that they also include a $200 student gift card, a 5% rewards card, and free shipping.

    Worked for me.

Dont buy a PC from Dell online. Call them. They can apply the student discount to ANY laptop.

Thanks very much. I will definitely order online. I sent an email to a rep about the system. I'm not planning on ordering until the 24th of this month because that is when I will have around $1800 to play with for my m17x.

    Agreed!
This is what I did almost 2 years ago and I ended up getting a nice discount. It's been my experience to never never never order directly on line from Dell...

I used the student discount as well. How long did it take for you to receive your gift card?

    Hello there,
Can a UK student ask for a student discount purchasing from US store?

Allow around four weeks on average, no less than two, to receive your gift cards.

As for UK I'm not sure as every market is different. I would strongly reccomend you read through the UK getting a good deal thread as well as reading the first few posts in the sales assistant thread and then send a pm to the right Dell employee for a quote.

Thank you very much. I suppose when they say it takes 10-20 days to arrive by email, they meant business days. I was hoping to use it to buy some accessories before my laptop arrived, haha.

Here is what you should do.

    1) Figure out exactly what you want. Make a list.
    2) Go to http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware/669327-alienware-sales-assistance-thread-redux.html and read the first few posts
    3) Send a private message to Rev with your list and ask him for a price quote
Be sure to tell him you are a foreign exchange student. Also ask for a 5% gift card, a $200 student gift card, and free next day shipping.

Rev is really good at getting back to people with quotes. The price he replies with should be much cheaper than what you would get off the website.

I ordered an m18x and I was able to get the $200 gift card. I suppose it all depends on who you get for a sales rep

From what I noticed, maybe I'm wrong, it depends what school you are in as well. I had some problems with getting the student discount then after chatting with a rep, he said that my school does have a deal with Dell..

Good thing that Dell offers both if you call a rep. You can get a huge instant discount and a gift card and 5% back for Dell Advantage.

I'm confused about the rigamarole of going through the process of getting verified as a student and the pricing on those machines? When comparing the 15R currently up at the back to school sale page here

Dell Member Purchase & Employee Discount Program (MPP) | Dell
it appears identical to the one you see for the verified student that comes with an Xbox or $200 egift card. Only difference I can see is the "xbox" one has a premium 1 year protection instead of the standard 1 year. The "xbox" version has this pricing
    Starting Price $996.98
    Student Discount $296.99
    Subtotal $699.99

And the back to school one has this pricing:
    Starting Price $688.99
    Member Discount $150.00
    Subtotal $538.99

What's with the really big discrepancy on pricing?

    Am I missing something obvious?
