Just wanted to know how MANY people are annoyed enough by the Stuttering issue to sell their m17x and not going back to dellware ever again..... well maybe to the refreshed version
-
-
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
not me i would keep buying from dell
-
The only stuttering I can recall was with bad nVidia drivers and high GPU over-clocking with the nVidia cards. On a day to day basis or when playing FO3 or Borderlands I didn't have any stuttering.
-
indeed, since you got the ATI gpus, but not everyone got ATI gpus
-
on my first M17x i NEVER O'c the cards and got FPS drops on DAY one
so i guess every set up behaves different, but dell should have at least tested several m17x with different configurations and chosen the right decision before the final release, not just "OH seems that there its a latency problem with the m17x, but we can sell it anyways and hope we can fix that on the next bios update"
-
Depending on the refresh offering I may go for the next Gen M17x
-
I had terrible stuttering. Long story short,
- I removed the alienware partition on the hard drive, reformatted it.
- Loaded Windows 7
- Loaded in the correct order, ONLY the newest drivers on the Dell site.
Stuttering was eliminated. -
its strange
i can play lfd2 on best settings, and not get ay stuttering.
i play dota, and it stutters maybe once every 3-4 minutes without fail.
im still within dells 30 day gurantee, should i return it? i've thrown out all my boxes though :/ -
you better return it while u can
-
So an M17x with an nVidia setup showed a stuttering problem more often than an ATI setup?
-
Apart from the stutter am happy. It was less pronounced in vista with a02. That's my weekend prject I think.
-
I called a Alienware rep and he told me to do a fresh install with windows 7, re-apply the drivers and i can say that im very satisified and ready to play RE5.
-
ok,
after spending $AUD 3700 and having the sutter during my favourite game dota....i;ve decided to use the 30 day satisfaction to return it
do the ATI cards have this problem too? or is it only nvidia? -

NO
At least I can always turn integrated card on to get rid of stutter

I don't have any problem. That's why you should take ATI cards.
-
lol, are you really serious
you have to do all of those procedures for a minimum task of mp3, a 3k laptop that has to be rebooted in order to listen to music, sounds reasonable right?
-
I am keeping mine happy with it bu tgot a solution for you all with problem.Checkout link

I have been reading a lot in Notebookforum, but I reluctant to follow any major work-around.
well, tonight I decided to install Nvidia's latest BETA driver 195.81 after upgrading to A03 BIOS.
After switching from 'Adaptive' to 'Prefer maximum performance' under Global Settings tab (Power Management Mode) I NEVER get a single RED SPIKE (not even yellow), maximum green spike is 900
Well, if you guys are bored, maybe give it a try, very simple though. The GPU temperature does increase 5-7 degree (45-50 now)
I do keep everything at base settings, no re-install anything whatsoever, except the new Beta Nvidia 195.81 and A03 BIOS -
hey arsenal 243
do you get a spike when you press eject? -

First I want to clarify that I have audio issues when and only when the following 2 factors are combined:
1: SLI enabled.
2: Not in a game.
For everything except gaming I use Save Power mode where I have never ever had audio stutter at all.
For gaming I use Performance mode and in game I have never ever had audio stutter at all either.
And all it takes is 3 secs to switch between those modes. I always have Hybrid SLI enabled so I don't have to reboot between shift.
So I'm serious
-
I would return it. The 30 day garantee is to make sure you're satisfied. You've got stutter, you're not 100% satisfied.
-
Well I'm using the 195.81 drivers in W7 and can still produce those red spikes by minimizing/switching browser tab, at boot (especially right after boot). Basically, I have to be very patient (wait 2-3mins after restart/boot) and careful to avoid it at music/video playback.
-
aikimox, i have a question for you since you're using ubuntu, have you ever tried running dpc check under linux with wine or something ?
-
Man, I am about to snap at this point.
Stuttering is sooo annoying.
Anything else I can do to fix this? -
thx for the advice guys, just rang and a return is in process.
they tried to send a tech out, but i said i dont want to waste dells time and my time, and I know it is a hardware problem with the components, changing them wont fix it. got the refund in the end , but it was a hard slog -
Congratulations, now get yourself an Asus or Clevo/Sager.
Either way, this is lame, very lame.
This needs A+ priority from Dell/Alienware to get this fixed in a timely manner! -
At least they authorized a return. They gave me absolutely no trouble at all when I called to return mine. But I had no real issues with my M17X. No real audio issues, not much stuttering at all, just got it recently but figured my money is better spent in the refresh. Hoping most issues with be eliminated with that.

I was unable to get it running through WINE, but there's no need for it. Trust me if you boot into linux you will feel the difference. There are several people on this forum (Stamatisx is one of them) who tried Ubuntu and had 0 stuttering. It's just impossible to believe the difference.
I have a dual boot and every time I need to go into W7 it's just unbearable. Linux however is a constant tweaking if you change a lot (like I do) on your system and go extreme.
I'd suggest you to try the LIVECD without affecting the system, but just remembered, you won't get sound till you install the alsa-backports for your kernel, so to try it you'll need to install it.
Stuttering bad enought to sell M17x
