I just updated the BIOS today, nothing changed, stuttering still.
-
like i said its a HEAT issue...
-
-
What happens when you unplug your AC Adapter and run off battery? Does the stuttering stop?
-
If it was a heat issue, unplugging the AC adapterwould not correct the problem instantly.
Also, if it was a heat issue, why is the stuttering limited to quad cores?
The northbridge is the same regardless of the CPU so the "heat" issue that keeps getting reffered to, must be on the CPU then. Right? If so, why then doesn't HWmonitor read a heat problem on the CPU?
Due to some crappy thermal compound I used, my temps are way higher than anyone with the stuttering and I have no problems.
I just don't see heat being the culprit here especially considering how a few folks have unplugged their AC adapters and the stuttering went away.
EDIT: The owner over at Killer Notebooks (has the same model called the Nagamaki) says every single quad core stuttering issue he has ever seen has been due to a voltage issue. He is working to get the Bios unencrypted so the voltages can be changed. -
That would be so nice wouldnt it?
And btw. the forums are giving me a headache.. i needed 15 minutes to be able to post this reply.. -
Mark does a he** of a lot of testing on this rig since he sells them, and knows how to correct the Bios.
Yeah, the lagging and 404 are out of control! -
the tool i have is on "loan" to me from a freind who had to pay for it so i can not freely give it out sorry to say. but if mark looks around the tool is out there is actually a lenovo tool but seems to work fine on insyde encrypted bios' from other brands but he would have to have access to it from lenovo. my freind pays for this tool as a repair / warranty person for lenovo so he was able to buy the tool for his use. he simply is allowing me to use his copy to try to mess with the aw bios for now.
if it was a voltage issue the copper mod WOULD NOT WORK but it DOES. for me and others i had 0 NONE NOT A HINT OF STUTTER after doing the mod. that would not b the result of voltage it would be bad contact with the nb die as i saw with the thermal paper i used to see the actual pressure / contact with the die. -
also when i removed the shim i had instant stutter. i placed it back in and was stutter free again
-
Now I'm wondering if the folks encountering the stuttering don't have different problems entirely. Z and a few others have solved their stuttering with the copper mod. At least two others unplug their AC adapter and the stuttering goes away instantly. We've had a couple folks now that have the problem solved with the B13 bios and of course for some the B13 Bios didn't help at all.
-
yeah this seems just totally all over the place. maybe they have some bad heatsinks.. not sure though i have 4 sitting here and i tried 3 of them with the copper mod and all showed the same results..
my freind who has the m17 tried b13 today and his stuttering was way worse than before. he went back to the .28 bios.
also at this point i can only see the bios i still cant change anything yet. the guy i know is working on that for me this week, the tool he has is intended for lenovo bios' so it seems to be able to open it but everything is still not able to be changed sorta like greyed out boxes if you know what i mean.. i am hoping also he gets it working. but after talking to a person a while back from flex they said the voltage setting is pretty much already maxed out in the ocz bios and they said there is not really any more headroom for that to be upped due to it not being capable of it.. -
Forgive my ignorance (I'm not familiar with Quad cores) but I read on another forum today where some people got rid of the stuttering by disabling two of the cores. I know, it kinda kills the whole point of having one but would doing this reduce the voltage requirement (and heat) and fix the stuttering for those that tried everything else without good results?
-
hard to say.. i dont have my system to test it on anymore. but i have seen some report actually higher temps with only two cores but i dont know if i believe that and id guess it would lower the voltage used by the cpu but again i need to test that to say for sure. i can borrow a m17 this weekend to try it out on and see what happens if no one else does it first
-
Thanks Z.
Hopefully it turns out to be another option to get rid of the stuttering at least on games that only use two cores. Not a great option though.
It's gonna be real interesting to see what the new rigs have under the hood! -

i have gathered all the fixes and quotes from everyone but i can't pin point the problem. one thing that i know is that alot isn't trying the copper mod that is alittle getting me mad. i understand that the whole warranty thing. but if 3 of 3 did it and it worked and nothing is wrong, then i don't see why they don't do it themselves to try. there saying all this stuff that we aer wrong like we startedmade a trick to get credit for it and won't even say"ok let me see what's up with this"
that's like saying get your licenses(copper) so you can go places(it fixed) on your own and stop bugging people(stuttering). its easy alot of people have it(people tried and it worked.). and your saying i don't know(don't want to do it), your wrong.(not trying it for themselves to see the results) still bugging people bothers them(stuttering).
i know hellcry's thermal pads where smashed in and he tried silver. but it didn't work but i want to see a picture of the silver to see if it is perfect. -
I think if I had the stuttering issue I would first try all the less invasive (read...non warranty voiding) methods first. If it still didn't get me the desired results the I would do the copper (or silver) mod for sure.
I don't think anyone is doubting the results of the mod, but rather, may be hesitant to dig into their laptop or possibly void their warranty.
God knows you guys have put a ton of effort into your solution. -
I just shuttered so hard opening fc2 that my pc froze making that sounds OK thinking back it was fine for the last few days when i updated like i said i was thinking i just now changed the power settings thats the first time since bios update and then it started shuttering so i just flashed my bios again and im not goin to change any of the power settings see if i dont shutter like before

also in your power profile set it to high performance and your min cpu state to try 35 and then try 100.
tell us your results. also use a good video driver 8.10 and up if you overclock. if not then 8.12 or 9.1 or 9.5 -
-
Not really a viable solution but it might provide more clues.
I don't have the quad or I would. -
I would love to try that. -
copper or silver mod doesn't possibly void the warranty. you can remove it at any time and they will never known if you mod it and it's as easy as applying a thermal compound. Anyway the mod improves the system performance and solves a hardware bug. and because it's an heat issue the mod will increase life expectancy.
I also moded the gpu's + northbridge and cpu heatsinks with small vga ram heatsinks. My temps droped about 5-6C. I can remove everything and it will be good as new (just 5-6C more hot) and I will still have a warranty.
I was considering doing some soldering and cutting the bottom of the chassis but I avoid myself from doing it due to warranty.
Anyway, the only change in the B13 bios was the 8gb ram support? they didn't change the voltage settings.
zfactor if you could compare the B13 with the previous version it would be great.
I've tried many times to mod the bios, ofc without any success.
boot.ini tab > advanced options
numproc > choose the cores
you have to reboot
done
and btw can someone with a x86 OS try this program http://getallhere.wordpress.com/2008/08/27/bios-bios-security-maintanance-toolkit-dos/ to open the bios? (long shot...) -
Thanks, __-_-_-__.
-
I really hoped the update would work, my laptop is still at the depot, doesn't seem to me there was anything priority about it. I called last week to say I will downgrade to the x9100 if the problem cannot be fixed, they said ok. I called again this morning to double check that and I was told they don't downgrade when there is a problem. Smells like a full refund in the air, which I have been offered if I get it back the 3rd time and no fix.
-
So anything new for B13 then ?only for support 8 gb ram ? if nothing changed, i should just stay with b10. THis seem not much big different between them.

i don't think they will. remeber they left tape on the slave gpus that made them hot and fail
-
If it were me Don, I wouldn't want to take the chance of hearing them say "sorry, it appears as though the warranty is vioded. How would you like to pay for the return shipping to your home?"
That would so suck! -

that is why i loved my ocz because when i thought i had a bad gpu(just a bad driver install) i called my reseller and ocz siad that i can send them the gpu and then when they recieved it they will ship me out a new one to replace it. THAT'S CUSTOMER SERVICE TO ME. but with the whole gpu situation i said sorry.
