Hey guys, I have an AW14R2 and an AW17R4 and was wondering if swapping the processors, memory, and hard drives would be a good idea.

    The specs are as follows:

    AW14R2
    i7 3840QM
    16GB DDR3
    512GB SSD

    AW17R4
    i7 3720QM
    8GB DDR3
    500GB HDD

Essentially, the components from the 14" would be going into the 17" and vice versa. I plan on selling both of them but I figure that the market for the 17" is a lot greater than the 14" and so I want to beef the 17" up as much as possible.

    Thoughts?

Do they both have warranties? This is usually a factor when people buy used machines and it may limit you from swapping the components.

If not you may actually be better parting out those and going for base components like a 3610QM instead.

    Unfortunately they don't :(.

I was thinking the same thing. If I can get the AW14R2 to a very basic state, I may end up keeping it. Not sure what everything is worth though (wish I had 100 posts...).

People buying 2nd handed machines are budget-cautious consumers
They are looking for good value so usually they will go for the base models
The people who want higher-end components are enthusiasts, but they would get brand new machines

    Found a 3610QM on Craigslist :).

Definitely true. I've had the AW17R4 listed for a week now and have gotten 0 bites at $1100. Might have to drop it to an even $1000 before I start seeing some interest.

Make sure you create an ebay store to sell there... otherwise you get hammered on the ebay fee, and it is harder to reach potential buyers.

Yeah, their fees are insane. I'm sure that it would have sold on eBay for $1100, possibly even a little more, but I like to use Craigslist since it's a lot more convenient for me and also the buyer. Going to end up posting it on here as well once I get to 100 posts. Have a few other laptops that I'd like to unload as well.

If you can find 2 cheap 3610/3630QM to put in the machines, you might be able to sell the 3720QM and 3840QM OEM CPUs separately for decent prices for people looking to upgrade their machines. :)

Craigslist can be good or bad... lots of trolls and scammers, and even more cheapskates looking to get something awesome for nothing.
In spite of that, I have bought and sold tons of stuff on Craigslist and always try that first before eBay, especially when I am selling.

Pros: face-to-face cash exchange only, no fees, no shipping and no waiting for merchandise... see it, touch it, test it first.
I refuse to ship or be shipped to using Craigslist due to rampant fraud.

Cons: people often expect you to sell them your stuff for pennies on the dollar instead of paying a reasonable price.
I have actually had people get angry when I told them it was a "take or leave it" price and not subject to negotiation.

Lol, image those people at a proper market, they would explode by the second stall.

Always face to face, always in a public place.

Yeah, plenty of low ballers on Craigslist but thankfully, I've never had trouble getting close to my asking price for any used computers that I sell.

I've decided to just sell the AW17R4 the way it is. It'll be cheaper than most, if not all of the AW17R4's that I've seen on the forums. Finally got the townhouse that I wanted and am going to be signing the papers this Sunday. Desperate times call for desperate measures :).

Nothing goes better with an Alienware than a warm home ;)

Besides owning a home is huge. Things are different when its YOUR house :)

Thanks so much! Definitely a huge investment, especially since I can finally bring the ladies home. Bye mom and dad!

Hah I agree. So much in fact that if I can't get this thing sold by Sunday, I'll be upgrading the memory to 16GB and the harddrive to an Intel 256GB SSD and keeping it in the throne. Gotta have something to do while I'm on the toilet :p.

If there was one thing it sensible to sacrifice for its getting that house, glad to hear you have your priorities straight!

After a bit more saving you can always come back later, but house prices are never kind if you dont have one over the long run.
