that's sad to hear. mind you, i'd still give AW a last chance. but after that, returning it for a full refund should definitely be an option considered.

i'm just hoping they don't screw mine up as well... :(

    MrDj,

I wouldn't bother trying to fix it anymore. You have waaaay too many problems for a brand new computer. The more problems you have now, even if fixed, the more problems you'll have in the future. You are still within your 30 days.

Just get a full refund and/or get the thing fully replaced.

Remember, just because your account has Admin rights doesn't mean the programs you run also have Admin rights. Try to find the program's link/exe, right-click and choose "Run as Administrator".

Yeah, it's my personal theory that at least half of all total Vista issues are caused by that single thing. I have absolutely no data to back that up, but just the frequency at which I've had problems in Vista and the rate of success that one fix has had at fixing those problems, I wouldn't be surprised that I'm right.

I don't see any point in having user accounts if you're not sharing it with anyone - sure that also means anyone can use your computer but you won't leave an m15x laying around will you :p.

    Hmm... let's see!
    General status. Arrival(Domestic Transit/Import): Hams Hall / GB, 2008-04-22

A minute ago it said Sorting instead of arrival; so it first gets sorted and then it arrives? Arghhh! They should put it on a truck so it gets to my local pick up point in the morning and then it could get delivered tomorrow ^.^.

It's a good score, that is what you should be getting with the m15x.

Maybe I missed it, but have you completely wiped the system and reinstalled the OS?

My rule of thumb with computers is that if I have one I don't trust or a part of one I don't trust, I get rid of it immediately and replace it with something that is reliable. Reliability is my number one priority with computers.

    MrDJ...

I just read through this whole thread in one sitting. You have my deepest condolences. I am so sorry to hear of all your issues =/

Here are just a few things that come to mind: As others have said, do a clean Vista installation. You can use the recovery disk that came in your black binder. (I did it 3 times in trying to fix my keyboard issue. Whole thing only takes about an hour, and it's very simple.)

After that, re-install your drivers one at a time from the support disk. A clean install of command center (available from myhive) and the OSD utility may fix your touch control issues. Also, I turned off the user account security feature a day or so after getting the laptop. It is so obnoxious. (For those that don't know, after you turn it off, you should be able to find a link to tell windows not to notify you every two seconds that it's off. Should be called "change how windows notifies me" or something.)

If you still have issues, I would consider either sending it in for repairs, or demanding a brand new replacement system. Maybe a free upgrade or two. I know how long you've waited for this thing and it just gets me so frustrated to read through your story. Nobody deserves all that. Here's hoping it all works out.

I've just installed the LOTRO trial the other day, I got an extended 14-day trial that came with my XPS 720.. It's decent, but isn't as well-made as other MMORPGs I've played, especially WoW. Callidor, have you ever played WoW? BTW, my Captain is on the Brandywine server.

oiy..don't get me started. In my opinion, WoW is far too easy. It hands its players everything on a silver platter. LotRO is very similar, to be honest....just shinier graphics. I enjoy LotRO, but nowhere near as much as my true MMO home: Final Fantasy XI.

It is an extreeemely aquired taste. I think most people used to more American-ish MMOs (wow in particular), really just can't get in to it. FFXI is waaaaay more difficult, takes much more time to accomplish things, and is overall for more mature audiences. I think it's a much better game than WoW or LotRO, but I can understand why people often disagree with me. *Shrug*

BTW: I'm hoping to post a mini review and some pics this weekend after i've used it a bit more.

I've not had to reinstall anything luckily. All I did was remove that useless script file from the startup directory and that error message went away.
I have played Oblivion in the past but I doubt I'll install it on this pc, I've got plenty to be getting on with for the time being.

    Yep. Fingers crossed.

I've not updated the bios yet, I'm hoping to hold out for the final version so I don't have to stress myself over it twice in a row. But saying that, i've not seen anything along the lines of downclocking either (having played bits of The Witcher, LOTRO, Stalker and Company Of Heroes last night in a hot living room).

It seems all of the problems have been out of the box. Having had mine for 2.5 months now, I can say that no issues have developed in that time (the only issue I had, downclocking, was apparent from the first day actually -- I just didn't realise what it was then)

Probably some weird glitch in Vista..If you are still able to access the files then that's good. If you can't, then that would be another story...

The same thing happens to me, when I use the windows blinds skins and icon packager. When I switch back to regular settings sometimes the icons get screwed up!

    Try this:

Go to folder options/ mapoptions (I am translating from my Dutch XP)
then go to filetypes (last tab) and search for 'station' or something similar.

Then press advanced and try to change the pictogram...

    Hi all
    time to update this thread.

ive had my system for 4 days now and i would rather forget the first 2 days ever happened. after all the driver downloads and patches on the first day it did not solve the problem.
as posted earlier in this thread, what seemed to wake up the touch controls for the first time was when i pulled the external sound card out in frustration.
support has issued me with a rma number to return the system for inspection but i am holding of on that until the weekend so i can do some more tests.

    so the update so far.
wednesday was a touch and go situation. from boot up the touch controls worked.checked a few things but didnt load anything major onto the computer just in case. i didnt close the lid or put it into sleep or hibernation but the controls stopped again. re booted and they were ok again.
loaded a few pieces of software. hard disc sentinal. shortcut doesnt work and have to click on taskbar icon. keeps saying i dont have admin rights, but i do. right clicked and hit run as admin but still the same. re loaded same software on fujitsu and no problems. any idea if this is a vista problem?

    thursday (fun time)
thought i would see what this baby can do so i loaded the orange box. graphics are great on team fortress and half life 2. problems with portal though. loads and starts video. then closes with engine error: could not load library client. is this the software or the computer?
think i need a basic game controller as using the keyboard is a pain. any advice. is the basic microsoft one ok for now as i know someone at work whos i can borrow.
i have not loaded any new drivers or patches or updates including bios updates. do i really need to and if so which ones. im new to all this as previous computers i never updated once. as the saying goes @if it aint broke then no need to update it.

to answer previous questions (am i sending it back or canceling).
i was seriously thinking about it but have cheered up since as everything seems to be settleing down so i will give it a chance. still got 25 days left of return policy though :D
was still using my fujitsu for internet.

you would not want to use a controller and play with dual joysticks in tf2. your aim would be a bit slowed down compared to mouses. i would recommend to just get used to the mouse and keyboard. its easier to play if you have an external keyboard connectected. i keep playing with the laptop keyboard since im too lazy to unplug the keyboard from my desktop. if you play with the laptop keyboard for a couple hours you will get used to it.

sorry to spoil the good news but things have changed.
friday night wasnt too bad and i spent most of it playing team fortress 2 and half life 2 which are great games even for a newbie like me.

saturday. things start going a bit pete tong (wrong) for anyone that doesnt know the ****ney slang.
things i loaded today: steam, microsoft office and virtual DJ
programs load fine and everything seems hunky dorey EXCEPT for the whole computer acting very slugish. opening web pages and even going into start the whole thing hesitates. it feels and looks like im running a 1.5ghz & 512mb of ram and not a 2.5 and 4gb.
the software i use called hard disc sentinel to monitor the hard drive is blocked each time by windows and it keeps deleting the start up for it as it thinks it is a trojan virus.
the main reason i was a little cheesed off today is because the external x-fi card just doesnt want to work. their is no way i can change between the on board realtek sound and the soundblaster card. ive loaded the software 3 times and it says everything is working fine but there is just no bloody sound coming out of the external speakers.

    conclusion from today:
gaming is great and works fine but everything else is having hiccups and is playing silly buggers.

after my initial 2 hours talking to support on tuesday and them asking me to return it for a checkup i thought i would give them the benefit of the doubt and keep it for a few more days. sadly them few days are up and i think its time to talk to support again tomorrow.
everyone ive shown the computer to from my IT dept. at work says to get a refund but i dont really want to do that as i like the beast but at the moment the beast is being a bit of a ***** cat and there is only so much i can take.

    more updates to follow soon
