The m1730 is a good deal, but Dell's latest announcements are worrisome and tend to decrease confidence in the longevity of the XPS line as well as future support of the m1730. We already know that Dell is either dropping or fading out 4 XPS models that compete with AW's offerings and they have publicly stated that they are intent on focusing more on AW as the supplier of top end mobile gaming solutions. They stated they would be merging some of the development teams and offering additional resources to AW in the future as well as taking the XPS line in "new directions".
Based on that, I'd hold off on a m1730 purchase if I were you. I had purchased one but when I heard those announcements I quickly canceled the order because I don't like the idea of future support for the m1730 being compromised. Dell came back a few days later and tried to assuage users by saying future support for their systems would be assured, but it's obvious to me that in the future, Dell intends to promote AW as the primary provider for high end mobile gaming solutions.
I'd hold off if I were you. Wait at least until June when Dell announces which models are biting the dust. The m1730 will more than likely continue to price drop after that announcement and your purchase would be even cheaper.
Who knows, there might be a m15x skullcap by then with a new and improved case design with most of the thermal issues taken care of.
-
I would wait as the weight might drop and hopefully the quality will be better on AW systems, never thought I would say this, but Dell might raise quality...
not all are perfect, but Dell nor AW rates as top in consumer ratings.. -
thanks for the info guys,i appreciate it.
-
what can I say DJ
the m860tu is just around the corner by now.
-
ill have a red up about it. -
Real sorry about your experience mate. Hope your next purchase doesnt suck as much as with AW (and i know it wont)
-
i think ill just stick with my fujitsu siemans laptop for now.
sadly no gaming though as it cant handle it with its paltry 1.7 processor,2gb ram and shared graphics
oh well, at least ive had not one problem with it so it will have to do for now. -
Wow, you know... I've sat and pretty much read this forum in one sitting. I can't believe the problems I've been hearing here about the M15x. It's shocking. I've just ordered one of these recently, but only one day after I placed my order I've now noticed that they've given the UK site an overhaul on the M15x customization page and are now offering it in the silver "scullcap" design that the US customers have been able to get for a long time now.
I am now torn between the smooth, simple, unpretentious "Ripley" lid, or the aggressive, trademark "scullcap" lid. *sigh* I need to decide pretty fast so that I can e-mail customer services before they actually build it. Suggestions on which to get? Or does anybody here live in the states and can privide a snapshot of the scullcap? -
Unusually I think our friends over in the good old US of A only got the silver skullcap on the m15x a few days ago.... it makes a nice change being in the UK and getting a new product at around the same time as them even if it is only a different lid.
Fingers crossed this is the start of an AW CS revolution -
thanks for resurecting my threadjust in time for my refund.
i dont think we will see the first skullcap come off the production line in the uk for at least 4-5 weeks. it will be difficult to give you advice as no one in the uk has seen a skullcap before except on older models but i must admit it does look nice.
good luck on whichever you chose and lets hope its a perfect working m15x -
How is that refund story going DJ? Do you have the money back?
Gunsmith, as I said... it all comes down to looks. In my opinion, Ripley is much more versatile as it looks a bit more "professional". The Skullcap just looks like a gadget, a toy... and it looks only like a gaming computer. -
dhl said it arrived at AW on 28th may. AW said it arrived 31st may and of course it was a bank holiday that weekend so nothing happened to it until 3rd june.
rang them today and guess what (what they wanted me to hear) the money was paid into my account today. so any day now it should be back in my account. -
Are they going to pay you the full ammount you paid or take you shipping expenses?
-
and id better get the 18p as well -
they never charged u a restocking fee for getting a refund?
-
Did you get the money back yet DJ?
-
Not allowed to charge restocking fee in Europe.
-

Well done... Happy you got your money back in one piece.
Wait a bit my friend... One more month and you will know so much more than we all know now. Wait for Montevina to come and then make a decision.
Also, look at the new Qosmios from Toshiba. Those look good. Specially the 17' with the 9800GTX. -

MrDJ, very honestly... wait one month. And then decide...
In any case, I doubt European costumers will see the M17x before August. And men... that's not a laptop. That's a brick!Too big and doesn't really serves the purpose of a portable notebook. But, obviously, that's only my personal opinion.
-
ill hold on for a while guys.
i will look forward to reading up on all the new lappies and platforms coming out.
will be interesting to read all the responces in the worldwide survey over the next 2-3 months.
also will add another page to the survey for all the m17x owners. -
-
Yes, you are right. My comment wasn't targeted to the M17x, but to 17'' laptops. It just doesn't compute to me...
The M17x does look nice though. -
I've never understood the appeal of super-large DTRs either, especially the ones that are like 20"?!
But, to each their own I suppose. *shrug* -

Whilst i agree with what you're saying about 17's, to be fair they are too big to be called "mobile" i want one for gaming as the larger screen is better for viewing 1920x1200...
So, August eh... I was thinking in time dor Christmas 2009 ha ha ha ha
OB -
For some, the standards for portability are very low. Even a 20" DTR is more portable than a standard desktop PC.
-
-
It's not even only about cost-efficiency. A desktop for half a price of a fully juiced 17'' is much more powerful. More... most of the people with 17'' claim they never move it. So why not a desktop instead?
Anyway... everyone to it own. -
-
yep. for those of us who travel a lot for work and other reasons, a powerful DTR laptop is great. The 5793 I've ordered is an 8-pound 17-incher, which makes it fairly portable. That's really less than a pound heavier than the m15x, and about an inch wider. So for me it's comparable, and the sturdy build makes it good for moving around a lot. But the BIG 17-inchers that way upwards of 12 pounds - too big and heavy for me.
-
bumping this so ppl can see
-
Noooooooooooo! dont remind me
-
I am going for the new mac, unless something big ( really nice looking and solid) comes along.
Was funny to see you and Milcs went for Clevo's in the end, hope that will work out, mean it- they seem very good compared to AW, I want to spend more on ssd and cpu and software, more my needs. -
good luck with with whatever laptop you get. you could always wait until me and milcs get ours as it might change your mind. -
I purchased a AW 9750 and It is the love of my life, however tomorrow AM I ship it back to the factory to get my GPU core temp problem solved. I am a college student and I lug my laptop everywhere, back home for the weekends, to class every day, from my room to the living room to the kitchen. The portability of the 17'' isn't the worst thing in the world. I just bought a nice Dakine laptop backpack. The demographic is people who want a high powered machine that they can take with them.
