man getting mine ordered on a friday was a bad idea, now I have to wait till monday for the order/payment to even be confirmed. Waiting sucks
oh well. From everything I've heard, I'm glad I opted for the 1440 screen. I have good eyesight, I don't want to ruin it squinting at microscopic fonts
-
i have a 1440 screen and im enjoying it as long as the labtop can perform good for games i can care less about the screen just as long as its a screen lol
-
I have a new HDD for my m9750 that i would like to install to replace the one that came with the m9750 and i have the alien respawn dvd. I have no files to backup since the system is new.
After i install the new HDD how do i get vista and all the drivers (the way that the system came with the drivers on to the HDD). -
Hi All
First time poster here from the UK and soon(ish) owner of an M9750.
I'm in a bit of a quandry and need some advice. I've just literally placed my order for the M9750 yesterday and went with the WXGA 1440x900 screen res instead of the WUXGA 1900x1200 res and I'm not sure if its the right decision.
I like to have loads of space on the desktop to be able to view multiple documents and thought that the WUXGA res would be best but seeing feedback on here that the fonts on this res will be way to small put me off a bit. My eye sight is fine though and it probably wouldn't bother me but there is that doubt without actually seeing one in the flesh. Also as I've gone for the single 9750GTX option I assumed the lower WXGA res would be better suited for one graphics card.
So have I made the right decision going for the lower res screen? Would having just one graphics card hinder performance at WUXGA res or would it be ok? Will 1440x900 be lacking in detail etc?
It's still early enough to change the order to the higer res screen but I just don't know what to do
When you spend a large amount of money on something you want to get it right first time. If any current owners of both screen types could give me some feedback it would really be appreciated.
Thanks in advace! -

What size screen do you use currently and what resolution do you have? It sounds like you should have gone with the WUXGA but that's just me.
-
Wow that was quick, thanks Chaz!
I'm currently using an old Acer Travelmate 800 laptop and it has a 15" screen at 1400x1050 which is OK but sometimes feels a bit restrictive. -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
You should definitely be fine with WUXGA on a 17" if you are comfortable with the resolution you have now. I'd call and change your order, or cancel your order and place a new one. You will be glad you ordered the WUXGA.
-
One last thing Chaz before I make my mind up. Is there really a noticeable peformance drop when gaming using a single 7950GTX and the WUXGA screen?
-
well games are still gonna look good on high settings with any screen but ive heard people who do and dont like the higher resultion screen its just personal option but i rather save the $300 and upgrade other things but its up to you but both are gonna do the job. the single 7950 gtx will do just fine
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
There will be a significant performance decrease in newer games going from a 1440x900 screen to a 1920x1200 screen because the higher resolution takes a lot more processing power. However you don't have to game at the high resolution, you can lower it to get better performance. Yes the screen will not be as sharp out of its native resolution but as long as you keep the aspect ratio (widescreen) then it will be fine. -
The only other consideration is price as going to the WUXGA screen adds another £106 (about $180 ish dollars) which would hurt. I wont be the only person using the laptop as my girlfriend will be using it aswell and I think she would appreciate the higher resolution screen.
Thanks for your input guys! I'll be speaking to Alienware tomorrow so I'll let you know which way I go. I'm going to have a long hard think and sleep on it. -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
In my opinion the screen is one of the most important parts of the notebook. It is one of the parts you can't upgrade aftermarket so get what you want when you buy the notebook.
-
Still better than the US, there its 300$ and btw £1 = 2$ now.
-
I went with the smaller screen and it serves my needs very well so far. I guess it's all personal preference.
-
Oh yes so it is! That would make the price of my config with the WUXGA screen upgrade $3,423.10
-
Well I managed to pop into a local PC store this lunchtime and checked out two laptops one which was running 1440x900 and the other 1920x1200. I have to say after a long play around with both I much prefer the WUXGA screen size so that's the one I am going to go for
Even though it's going to cost more money I think it's the right move and as Chaz commented earlier in the post its something that cannot easily be changed (or at all) later on so it's best to get it right first time.
It's a shame I am going to have to wait 2-4 weeks for it though, I want it now

Congratulations! That is a beast of a system.
My review unit is on its way to me, I should have it tomorrow guys.
-
Looking forward to it...
Thank's for all info on both models N9260 and M9750
just by reading this forum i learned a lot about notebooks. -
Hello Chaz,
Do you have some advice regarding tweaking it with "Windows Vista Ultimate"
before starting to use it
i want to press max. out of the system if possible ....... -
I don't see much of a point in using Vista at the moment. Stick to XP, get 2gbs of ram, and you're pretty much set.
Alienware told me they would offer upgrades to dx10 cards (8800m?) for m9700, m9750, and mALX (those are the models the representative thinks will get the upgrade) at some point. Until that mystery is solved, I don't really see much of a point in using vista. -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
I have Vista Ultimate on my machine. There are no programs like TuneXP out there for Vista but this was the best I could do to speed up Vista:
-Defragment the hard drive:
Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter. Vista actually defragments your hard drive automatically but after you install a lot of programs just do it manually and get it over with.
-Disable unnecessary services:
-Press Windows key + R to bring up the run prompt, then type in "services.msc" without the quotes. Hit continue when UAC pops up. There are a lot of services that are not needed. I have yet to go through them all. If you don't know what something does, then don't touch it. I used this site to figure out what they all did on Windows XP, although I am not sure how relevant this is for Vista:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/
Just put all or part of the service name in the search box in the top left-hand corner of the web page.
-Disable select startup programs
-Press the Windows key + R to bring up the run prompt, then type in "msconfig" without the quotes. Click continue when UAC pops up and go over to the Startup tab. There you will find a list of things that start with Windows. Check/uncheck them as you wish. Once again, if you don't know what something does then don't disable it.
I'll let you know if I do anything else in the future . . . that's all I do for right now. Not that much I'm afraid. -
I ordered this harddrive but is it compatible with the alienware i know it takes sata 150 but is this the right type... hopefully its compatible

Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Why would you order it if you don't even know if it works?
Ask here first.
Yes that drive will work fine. The M9750 has SATA hard drive interface. -
WOW i read your first line and got so scared lol. No i think i asked you and you said it was compatible but than i was looking over it again and it was SATA 300 and i usually saw SATA 150 so i wanted to double check. Heh thanks for the clear up
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
SATA 3.0Gbps is backwards compatible with SATA 150 so you'll have no problems. Didn't mean to scare you.
-
My 9750 is less than 75 miles away.
cant wait for Fed Ex tomorrow! -
Hey Shadowhunter! Im a fellow 9100 owner too looking at this computer after months of thinking I would get the XPS 1710.
Regarding the 9100, yeah its big, but it was a great machine in many respects. Im curious, did you order one when they first came out? Cause I did and I remember the same type of headache with ordering as Ive just finished reading 40 + pages about here. We were all delayed over a month cause of some hold up that even made the news. I was so frustrated by the 2 month + wait but then when I got it, I forgot my frustration.
SO, my question to Shadowhunter is, I want to know how different the power brick is. CAuse the 9100 has a BEAST of a power brick. I want to know the difference. Now I myself have carried this large laptop and power brick to and from work every day for the 3-4 years Ive owned this now and while its heavy, I havent wished Id have bought something else. If anything, it doesnt seem like this laptop is any heavier than the 15" 9100. And its thinner too!. But Im curious about the power brick so when you get it, let us know how it compares to the 9100 one. -
Well I finally placed my order and this is the system I went for:

-
Thanks Chaz, I can't wait
Estimated for 06/08/07.

I'm rather annoyed that I was moved from phase 4 to phase 3 today. I had been on phase 4 for 8 days already.

rub it in my face ;_;

Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
I don't recall seeing anyone move backwards in the process . . . that is interesting. Please keep us updated on your status! You might want to call Alienware about that.
LOL, I didn't mean to do that. -
That happened to me last week as well. I called alienware and they said that due to high demand of the system, the site has been having some problems. They then confirmed for me that my system never reached phase 4 and was actually on phase 3. Don't let this break your spirit though, they also told me my system would enter phase 6 by the end of this week. I checked on my system last night and it was already shipped. Just make sure you call every day and speak to someone, its a little more accurate
-
I also had my order move from phase 4 to 3 yesterday when i called them to ask about my order but dont worry somehow apparently that means that they are actually making progress because when i checked this morning i was in phase 6
WOOT
-
when did you guys order? I ordered june 26th. It's scheduled to leave ~july 25th. Ah well, I hope the same thing occurs with mine. I need mine to arrive before august because I won't be in my homecountry by then. I'm in Panama so I'm having it sent to my miami address and the forwarded here. That pretty much extends the shipping by 4 days since my forwarding service is slow ;(
-

they say my chassis is backordered and maybe there tomorrow...
keep on waiting.... (be strong) -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Congratulations on your order egologe, that is an absolutely insane configuration. SLI, 4GB of RAM, and the T7600 must have cost a lot of $.
Well guys I received the M9750, it's sitting right next to me as we speak.
It is beautiful. I've had it running for about two hours and it pushes out a lot of heat. Thankfully the entire unit remains very cool to the touch.
Will have the full review up in about a week or so . . . -
I just got off the phone with some alienware sales rep and she told me that I'm still on phase 4 (yay me) and that my order should be shipped by next week. I'll call tomorrow and see if I get the same response =]
Now I just need a bag for it. I'll be using my XPS2 as a server/torrent machine/extra laptop sort of thing so I'm using the XPS bag for that. -
The heat side of things does worry me, especially when on your lap if needs be. Still undecided on whether to go for a m9750 or a Lenovo T61P. Decisions decisions please help me
-
i called tech support and found out that there was space for 2 harddrives. i did not know that lol. Well that is good for me. Now i can use the second one for storage.
But i have a question one is 5400 rpm and the other is 7200rpm. Is it slower that it boots from the 5400rpm though most of the data is going to be on the 7200rpm?
And does anyone know the company of the 8x dual layer drive they give you (from the inventory sheet). -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Hm? If you install the operating system on the 5400RPM drive it is going to boot off of it. The data won't be placed on another drive. If you're talking about a RAID 0/1 configuration, you need two identical drives to accomplish that.
The DVDRW drive in my M9750 is an Optiarc DVD RW AD-5540A. Alienware doesn't just use one brand of optical drive though. They use whatever they have on hand. So you could get an NEC drive, a TSSTCorp drive . . . it varies. -
yes you are right....
but i worked hard and therefore i make myself a present...
congrats as well with your new system...enjoy.. -
The situation is this. it came with an 80gb @5400 with OS on it. I thought i could stick a 160 @ 7200 for storage purposes. But it has to be 80 and 80 or 160 and 160 to work? And the only other option is an external enclosure? hmm
Oh they use whatever they have lol. Well thanks though i just wanted an idea.
Will be looking forward to your review as well. =) -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
You should be able to do that no problem. However I am not sure if the M9750 comes with a secondary hard drive bracket if you do not order two hard drives with the system. I know the HP dv9000/dv9500t notebooks do not. Perhaps an owner who has already received their unit can enlighten us? -
oh ok i will wait on someone to tell us as well than hopefully it does come with an additional bracket. If not is it troublesome to find brackets.
