this is the last test i did before i send back my m17x tomorrow i did this because some people is confused about the flickering problem, well here is a video with the 920xm running prime95 and furmark multi gpu you can see how bad is it, that happens during games too not all games but one example masseffect 2,and i did this with the factory windows install is like out of the box the same thing happens with the 820qm just not as much like the 920xm "yes i try both cpu's :( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WclJD2DI71o

This only happens with Xfire enabled? disable xfire and all problems disappear?

I'll just ride it out on one gpu until they fix it. You said a psu or bios update... do you think there will be an official recall on the PSU then? its so pretty and thin though... i hope it doesn't get thicker like the m1730's.

Of course, i got the 920 for free, so I'm not gonna complain... too much. I don't see how they're gonna continue selling 920's with this crap happening though. A fix will be inevitable. R-1 problems were rooted in the 280's right? So, if im not mistaken, unless there's an actual issue with the CPU, a bios update should be able to resolve this. I guess we don't know enough technical information about the actual cause to speculate what the real solution will be.

Side Thought: How complicated is it to code a BIOS? How come no one ever does custom bios fixes?

That's so frustrating, I was hoping for them to get a fix that doesn't need to replace anything, like in my case, I'll be out of USA in april. So I need a fix really quick.

    My system is:
    RGB LED, i7 820, 256GB SSD, Xfire 4870
My flickering is so bad, I think is the worst so far, comparing to the videos I am seeing, my flickering is constant.

I'm beginning to think this is an ATi problem with the PM55 chipset, especially since 820QM users are having the flickering problem. If it is, I hope AW switches to dual 285's instead and I get offered that option on Wednesday.

Do you know if they're going to change it for the NVidia?

That's so frustrating, I think I'm going to return mine and get some other brand...

My laptop is currently at Alienware headquarters in Miami. It's being tested by the engineering team to determine what's wrong with it. The 285M is just speculation on my part because I'm bored right now and it's nearly 1 am. You will all get an answer as soon as AW tells me what's going on. I'm supposed to be told something by Wednesday which isn't long now.

It's my understanding that the Intel chipset used in the R2 does not support SLI. Wish it did and that a viable Nvidia solution might emerge, but don't think it's an option.

Who knows if the PSU is even the culprit? My tests never showed power draw exceeding the max limit of the PSU although it does remain a possible factor. We just have to wait and see what AW comes up with.

Hey Joker, what Alienware told you so far? Are they aware that this is not a single problem? do they know that lots of ppl got the same issue?

Are you hoping that they can fix it with some kind of bios update, because the R1 model went trought a lot of problems with stuttering and long time with no updates to solve the problems.

Its an upgraded G92b. Slightly higher clocks than the 280M with a reworked PCB from what I'm told.

Well the X8100 is definitely an ugly notebook but the point is the PM55 chipset works fine with GTX 280/285M SLI. I'll take those over any ATi solution.

Yes I'm confused for wanting stable driver releases from the manufacturer instead of relying on 3rd party hacks. ATi has failed to impress me so far with the 4870s, I'm just hoping I get that 285M SLI option so I can finally download stable drivers direct from nVidia without worrying about the grey screen of death or the hotfixed driver of the week. You can have fun benchmarking the ATi but I need a stable gaming platform and nVidia hasn't disappointed me yet.
