I emailed alienware and asked about GPU upgrade possibilities for my m15x.
In the mail he also said this though:
Hope it's usefull![]()
-
Hmm, wonder if that means the 4870's are for the m17x not the m17
-
That is a possibility. Alienware folks aren't always the smartest bunch and I'm sure "M17" and "M17x" arer the same to them.
-
He did say "NEW m17x"
-
I am talking about the other reps claiming the availability of the 4870's for the older M17.
Maybe they see the availability for the M17x, not the M17.... -
we have had it confirmed by 3 different employees today that they are bound for the m17
and they def knew i was talking about m17 as they took my account number etc and spoke about the returns procedure should i order the upgrade -
Yea, Sleey0 i bet you are right, though other people confirmed that the 4870s are available for the M17, all they can see is what is placed on their computers and if the input was incorrect that means no new 4870s for the
M17 -
Ok. Cool.
I hope it happens for the M17. And you guys will be rockin' you lappies with CF 4870's!! -
you always sound infinatley sceptical, if you genuinly dont believe that AW will upgrade it take the $$$ hit and get a credit and reorder
-
Well either way I would get the new M17x because it has nvidia, overclocking, aluminum chassis, better cooling, higher clocked RAM, better lighting options, and its also covered by Dell's accident insurance aka complete care
! If they do release skullcap for the new M17x, I can just have them replace the current lid with a skullcap lid
! But regardless he new M17x looks really cool even without skullcap.
-
First the hit I would take on a credit would be too much. Second can you blame someone for being a skeptic? If we just believed what anyone told us without inquiring then we may end up disappointed or worse taking a hit in the pocketbook because of misinformation. Being skeptical should not be confused with cynicism, that is definitely not what I am trying to portray. I just am not positive about the upgrade sources that is why I am inviting more information to be displayed if it exists
-
I would love to get a brand new laptop, but the funds just arent there, it would be much easier for me to upgrade the gpu then my cpu then to try to sell my current laptop then save the additional 1600+ dollars to buy a new one. So I hope the information is right, I really do, I just would like to know more.
-
added info to officia M17x thread.
-
Yeah, I understand that situation, I am saying that if you have an old laptop like me (overheating m5750) and you have the cash for a new one, you should go with the new M17x
!
-
Good idea, Thanks.
-
Definitely
-
Support for Xfire and SLI means greater chances of being able to upgrade so maybe a little more future proof.
Unless MxM 4.0 is around the corner.
-
Lol yeah, but hopefully they just stick with one standard right now for future upgrades
! I cant wait to get the new M17x
!
-
Now I got to wonder if it's keeping the switchable graphics will it be part of Hybrid Sli or CrossfireX...
-
ooh, good question- will HybridPower (GPU switching) work with the ATI cards?
-
HybridPower right now only supports Nvidia cards with Nvidia chipsets.
ATI's switchable graphics works with Intel chipsets but have no idea about Nvidia chipsets. Is there even an Intel Crossfire-capable chipset that has integrated graphics? I know the M17/Whitebook Intel chipset doesn't have an IGP.
It's a wait and see deal right now. Why I mentioned that even though I may wait for the 4870s for a month or two I may still end up buying the GTX280M SLI.
The new m17x supports both SLI and Crossfire
