Thermal paste same for CPU and GPU?

Noob question: when we talk about thermal paste (Gelid Extreme, IC Diamond), they are the same for GPU and CPU? Or there are kind of paste specific for CPU?

 

Nope, same paste for all components.

There's one exception. Liquid Ultra can make a damage to some components so better don't use this if you're not power user.

So far the best safe TIMs are Gelid GC Extreme / Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, Liquid ultra / Conductonaut are like liquid metals, they use Gallium and when it exposes to AL, It damages heavily, so not intended for testing unless you know what you are doing.. Intel Haswell CPUs have transistors on the side of the CPU core so not preferred unless you are a professional at TIM job, also the Nvidia /AMD cards need tape on the sides to avoid spillage and be safe.


And the Liquid Ultra does reduce upto 10C+ when applied correctly.

Echoing Ashtrix's post: I have had great results with Gelid GC Extreme for non-conductive paste, and phenomenal results with Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut (liquid metal).

Personally I use the liquid metal paste on my OC'd 920XM and Gelid on my GPU. My GPU runs cool anyway and the liquid metal paste really shines when applied to an overclocked CPU, or a CPU/GPU that generally runs hot (like most new thin laptops). Check my results in post 48:

I didn't mention it because some reported the scratching of heatsinks if they are not cleaned well, I myself scratched the CPU die ( 2-3 spots very light cannot be seen unless close inspection) with bounty. Gotta order Alcohol swabs and Arcticclean cleaning kit - these do the job perfect my first TIM job was best.

 

I use Zippo lighter fluid for inital cleanup, and regular alcohol for final cleanup. Just a couple of drops of Zippo fluid will remove even hardend gunked up paste. Follow that with some alcohol for a nice clean surface.

 

I use Alcohol wipes and they're pretty good.. I personally prefer IC Diamond to Gelid, paste lasts much longer lol.

 

- I used MX-4, IC diamond and Gelid extreme. Mx-4 is great @ stock speeds and maybe a slight overclock, cleaning old MX-4 is a breeze, one wipe will remove most of the TIM.
- IC Diamond netted ~2c improvement, I Always used Arcticlean cleaning kit soaking the components for a while-> it scratched/ stained both heatsinks, therefore I won't use ICD anymore.
- Yesterday I tried Gelid extreme and I'm truly astonished by the results, 5c drop for the CPU and 4c for the GPU. I think (due to it's thicker viscosity) it's suits low-pressure heatsinks better.

 

Same here. I use ICD on GPUs. They are both very effective, just ICD a lot more durable for me. And, if you have a crappy fitting heat sink ICD is the only stuff thick enough to bridge the gap well. And, I've never really cared about the superficial swirl marks I sometimes get from ICD. Doesn't affect anything, so to me me it is irrelevant.

All liquid metal options do a phenomenal job. I have Phobya Liquid Metal, Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut and Liquid Pro and found all work exactly the same for me as Liquid Ultra, but I stick to the Liquid Ultra because it is much thicker. The others are very watery, zero viscosity to them, and I've seen all three of the others move from where I put it. Nothing bad has ever happened, but the thicker Liquid Ultra just gives me a greater comfort level. I've been using Liquid Ultra a long time now, and it has never once moved from where I brushed it on... amazing stuff. The corrosive to aluminum part doesn't matter as long as you don't put it (and leave it) on aluminum. If your heat sink has a copper or nickle heat plate, there is no reason to worry about what it does to aluminum. And, it won't hurt anything if it gets onto aluminum as long as you don't leave it there and let it do bad things to it.
