    Hello everyone,

I am back and planning on purchasing the M17x, as I was doing a similar thing almost two years ago when the M15x came out. I was pretty active here on the AW forums but decided not to purchase it as it had so much problems and the AW CSR's were either ignorant about the problems or denied it when I called and asked. Made a post with many of the ppl here at the time listing all the problems such as gpu downclocking, cpu downclocking, high gpu temperatures, hindge problems, touch control problems, keyboard lag etc... I gathered about 23+ owners and made a thread and calculated that about 84% had problems with the M15x. So I ended up purchasing a Dell 1730, and it is a solid computer, never had a problem with it.

Now because of hearing that the Clevo M980NU will have no bios overclocking feature, I am strongly considering the new Alienware M17x. I wasn't able to keep track on the news here about the M17x because I work a lot but when I do check it out, I see more ppl posting about problems than anything else in the owners lounge or in these forums in general. I understand that most people come here when they do have problems and people with no problems usually don't come here. But also there is the fact that new laptop owners won't even run the normal diagnostics of what most techies here would run when they first get their computer, such as riva tuner, so new owners would be oblivious to the fact that their computer is running hot.

But that aside, guys how is this new computer from AW? Any downlocking problems from the gpu/cpu or any overheating issues? I read a lot of problems with the system freezing or crashing especially when running games. And I also read the system is unstable when overclocking. although I know a new bios were released. Can you guys give me some feedback, would greatly appreciate it, it's been a while since I came on the AW section of this site but this notebook is a beast.

Oh one more thing, when I was pricing the system on the dell website, I was comparing default settings of the systems such as upgrading from default to 256 gb ssd hdd, 8 gigs of 1333 ram then I went to newegg and found the prices were similar. For example, 8 gigs of ram is about $763 at newegg and upgrading from the default is $800 on the dell website. And getting 256 gb of ssd hdd is over $500+ but configuring from the dell site, its only a $500 upgrade from the default setting. Is Dell/AW selling their stuff for good decent prices now compared to how it was when I was configuring the M15x? I remember their markup was really high, but for the M17x, it seems decent, and you don't have to do any upgrading yourself since the price is comparable to newegg, thoughts?

    Thanks guys appreciate any feedback,

    Dear OP,

Don't think about buying an M17X just buy it. Like all reviews say out there and like almost everyone here on this forum say: It's simply the best laptop ever built and by far.

Most of the problems come from people pushing it or tweaking it beyond what is needed. Out of the box it still offers exceptional performance.

And yes, the upgrades are VERY reasonable but still cheaper to do yourself, since you can sell the original parts.

No regrets on my purchase whatsoever... This machine rocks!
I second scook9, the max spec'd out M17x will burn a hole in your wallet, if your handy and understand PC's you can do (some) upgrades yourself (I even upgraded my CPU with help from the the ppl on NBR.
But Please note, this DIY will also cause ppl to post here. And Most of us are willing to help when advice is needed. So..More people, more problems but also more sollutions, which we M17x owners all can benefit from. :)

thx for the feedback s far guys, appreciate it. No downclocking issues on this system for the gpu and cpu like the m15x? How about the issues where the system was crashing and freezing. I read that one of the owners M17x crashed after the second boot. Any more feedback would be much appreciated

all the issues you have read about are nothing a couple had a bad HD (fact of life )

bad fan which is crappy but stuff breaks

or 2 had bad ram ...(fact of life)

system isn't unstable while overclocking just when you overclock to far

Now based on your post it seems you are not the best with computers and you don't work in the computer field ..

the laptop is great and there are NO defects with the M17x

So there hasn't been any downclocking issues with the M17x? And the system crashing isn't a common problem at all?
