hey, bear with me as i am a computer noob.
After doing considerable research, I am thinking about buying a base model m15x, but upgrading it with alien Fx. I am a student who will be needing the laptop for class and some FPS games, and also wondering if doing an after market RAM upgrade is worth it. If you have any opinions or advice it would be greatly apreciated.

    thanks Alienator

Buy the ram from whoever the day you place your order with AW that way it will be there when your computer arrives.

Get a cooler/fan platform as well if you plan on doing gaming.

And if you can afford it don't get the "base" cpu.

And if you order don't start any "Stuck in Phase Hell" game threads, just relax it will get here.

And remember even though it says "laptop", that's not where it should end up.

I have OCZ in my m15x. Other have a wide variety to include Kingston, OCZ, GSkill, Corsair, just to name a few. They all will suffice and work. If you get the 32bit OS you can get a full 4G in the unit, but if you get the 64bit OS, you can get a full 8G in it.... :)

newegg.com, tigerdirect.com are just a cpl places to get the RAM from.

as far as a cooler, if you choose to get one, and i recommend you do, i use the Zalman NC2000.

as one poster said, do not fall for the phase game. it is not accurate and can lead to unwarranted ulcers....

    peace and enjoy....

Alright I'm close to pulling the trigger and ordering this thing. Anyone think I should change my mind. The hinges does scare me but I won't open and close it much and I'm not seeing much about software and hardware issues which is encouraging. Does anyone know if they reinforced the hinges for current laptops. Also will current buyers, (within 3 months) please chime in and tell me if they are having any issues. If I get one I'll definitely come on here and talk about it so I could use some feedback from the current buyers.

If you're going to be using the laptop for class, I highly suggest getting the smartbay battery.

i have had mine since Sept. I have not had any problems regarding the hinges or anything else.
NOT saying how others use the units they have and NOT making accusations about such things, but everyone is different in how they handle the unit.
the only thing i had was about the SB unit. the drive was not pre-formatted and i was thinking it was me doing something until i turned on the light and discovered it was me not realizing the obvious.

anything else more specific you want to know?

Thanks ryujin for the info. I have a few more questions. Just basic stuff. Does it get noisy or heat up. I know that it probably does when you're gaming but what about in class when you're just looking at powerpoint and word. Do you think traveling with it will be a problem because I'll be taking it to school and on trips and stuff. Did you get the blu-ray drive because I was wondering on the quality of that since its pretty recent. I'm going to max it out so it will cost about 4 grand after everything. (How can they charge you for shipping?) I don't game a lot but I like to have that option. How does it behave when you're just watching movies or listening to music?

if you mean fan noise, yes it can get a bit loud, but nothing unbearable.
it mainly occurs when gaming and to be honest it does not bother me as i have headphones on usually for the duration.

i have had no issues with the exterior scratching.

    and i got the ripley.

    :)

    no prob jg.

if you mean fan noise, yes it can get a bit loud, but nothing unbearable.
it mainly occurs when gaming and to be honest it does not bother me as i have headphones on usually for the duration. heat is also present, but then again, it is nothing that bothers me personally and is not something i have had to worry about. to me it is no worse then some other laptops i have used.

as far as during class for noise and heat, one of the great things about this unit (and up and coming on other vendors) is the internal graphics option. i use the intel internal graphics a lot when i am doing work, or just basic stuff that does not require the need for the higher power nVidia card.

i did not get the blu-ray, but there have been several postings about it. some prefer the 1400 screen with the glossy coat vice the 1900, but then you have just the opposite. i have the 1900 and am very happy with it.

traveling: i travel for my job a lot as well. it has held up extremely well and i can find nothing that would cause irritation aside from the standard take out and put in bin action....i have an awesome swiss gear backpack that i use for travel and daily carry of the unit.

    :)
