No, it isn't a very good screen.

It is not as bright as some single lamp screens, has auto-contrasting that can't be turned off, and is generally a poor screen.

The $250 for the RGBLED is well worth it ;)

Well yes compared to other screens but he has only limited options and if he cant get the RGB LED the 1920x1200 would be his best bet.

If there is no other option, then you don't have a choice and must go for it.

Just saying it was one of the main reasons I sold my R1.

In some countries, like Italy, at the moment there is no possibility to choose RGB led. I tried to ask those nice guys @ dell.it selling dpt when the rgb led is supposed to be available but they simply do not know anything. Since my old laptop has gone, I decided to buy a M17 with Beyond HD (1200p) - Dual CCFL.

It's the same here in the Netherlands.
Guess we'll have to wait in Europe untill they put in those 5870's with RGB Led online. ;)

Heh, the auto-dimming/contrasting was stuck with SLI config, and AFAIK is ok with ATIs, at least in my case it doesn't exist.

The brightness is sufficient for me , never keep it above 70-80%. In 6 months of intensive use didn't notice any reductions in the brightness level.
The only thing that is and was there from the beginning is bleeding in the bottom/top/sides of the screen, which can be seen on any dark background.
And now I'm in pursuit of the mythical beast RGB LED to bask in the divine aura of its splendour :p

That makes two of us; these screens are actually too sharp for my eyes.

Aikimox, I am curious to know. . . you don't happen to suffer from a very mild case of colour-blindness do you (only limited to clusters of high-contrast colours squeezed together)?

For me, I never lower brightness on R1 except when I want to test OSD :D

I normally have to adjust MBP display's brightness. For example, in night I HAVE TO lower brightness if I dont want to be blind :D

Let alone color reproduced on R1.

OP, personally I find the difference between CCFL on R1 and WhiteLED on MBP is night and day. And by comparing some pics MBP vs R2 I dont even bother to make a comparison between R1 vs. R2 display quality wise.

Hmmm, dunno. Been through many tests (while in the army trying to get into specific units), was told once that I had a hidden "squint-eyes", but it was never confirmed 100% :p . Maybe one of the reasons off the extra colour/brightness sensitivity is due to the fact that my first 17 years were very far from the civilization (deep in the forests of Belarus, where in some secluded villages people still don't have TVs  ). Back then I was able to spot a tiny lizard in a thick grass 15meters away, and hear bugs climbing up the trees. I can only smile at those who create the "Rangers" -like classes for computer games. Very few people actually know what is a "trackless step" in reality. I used to spy after our hunters (those where real rangers) and once almost got caught in between the hunters, their dogs and the wild boar they were pursuing.... I can tell you, there are people living in those forests, that you won't be able spot unless you burn the woods.
Anyway, the brightness and contrast are relative to the observer. If you switch from the new MBP to R1 you might regret it. While switching from a 7-8 year old ThinkPad will bring lots of happy moments until Silly_Honey comes forth with his own experience and opinion and ruins everything :D ;) And now almost everyone knows the RGB LED is the God of Screens!
So right now, I'll only settle for the following laptop specs:
    Display: 1200p RGB LED
    CPU: i7-980X [6X2X3.33GHz]
GPU: ATI 2X6870 [will settle for Hecatonchires]
    *SATA 3.0, USB 3.0,
    The rest is less important.
We might see half of it at the CeBit in March, so I'm not that crazy,..just a little ;)

    Interesting background, dude.

Heh. I only asked because I've got a very strange mild case of colour blindness, which was discovered when I was around seventeen-years-old. The optometrist was baffled, since I could detect all colours, but my eye pressure would increase if red and green colours in high contrast would be clustered together very tightly. So in short, bright, sharp lights would strain my vision, but on the up side, I had strong eye sight, especially in the dark.

So the current screen is just fine in my books. Very bright. Although the colours are a bit different compared to my M1730's LCD, which is using the older LG screen known for having richer saturated colours (not everyone's cup of tea, actually).

Wow, I guess you are right. Do you feel eye strain/discomfort when inside malls? I feel almost dizzy and my eyes get so strained almost instantly in places with lots of bright artificial colors. I too have a strong night sight...hmmm.
