Ironically enough, a friend and I were just talking about this. We built a linux box with Ubuntu for use with his 42" 1080P TV and he managed to get WoW running on it through wine! Has anyone added a second HDD or partitioned the first and installed linux? I'm sure it runs great but has anyone tried gaming on it or am I just dreaming? :)

Don't worry about getting this thread closed, no mods ever check here. Chaz does sometimes but still only occasionally,

I'm going to install Ubuntu 8.04.2 today. I fully expect it to be unusable for anything 3D related, but I'll report back.

I have it on my second drive :D and play one of my favorite games Doom 3 on Ultra High settings. Doesn't even break a sweat!

If you are contemplating installing Ubuntu, let me give you some advice and save you the aggravation of falling into an unsolvable (for now) problem: DO NOT install 8.10. It will absolutely not work. Install 8.04LTS.

By the way, I use EasyBCD to multi-boot all my OS's.

hmm, thats interesting. My friend confirmed with me today he is running 8.10. He's also using Wine to play WoW. It took him a few days to get it running but he said it's perfectly fine. The next thing he's going to try and tackle is Direct X in Linux.

Wow, seriously? Perhaps a recent change in Xorg or the kernel or something? Let me see... the last time I tried Ubuntu 8.10 was around February. Then Installed 8.04LTS and worked.

Mr. Moo, when did you boot up the 8.10 (Live CD I suppose)? Did you recently download it or what?

Tkresila, same question, when are these 8.10 installations taking place? Are they recent.

I know only one other person, actually 2, with M17s that managed to run 8.04 no problems, but 8.10 didn't work, neither did 9.04 beta (as it is a continuation of 8.10).

Perhaps I should try a newer CD download. Mr. Moo. Are you able to see the desktop on your Live CD?

This install was from a while ago and it wasn't on an M17 rather a custom AMD box my friend and I built for his TV.

Oh. That explains it. I thought you meant that your friend confirmed running 8.10 on an M17. Anyway, you don't lose anything by trying it, but I think 8.10 on an M17 is still a no go. Plus 8.04 is LTS.

By the way, thanks for the review Mr. Moo

Yea I'd like to give this a try, but I think I'll wait until I get a second hard drive.
