Alienware-L_Porras your timing couldn't have been better! Rep+

As a previous generation Alienware owner, I am glad Alienware hasn't forgotten about us! ;)

I have been trying to nail down the following USB (BSOD) issue for a while. Do you think it might be related to the Renesas drivers? Here is what I am getting:

On Wed 3/6/2013 11:08:22 AM GMT your computer crashed
    crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\030613-9687-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: usbhub.sys (usbhub+0x12A60)
    Bugcheck code: 0xFE (0x8, 0x6, 0xB, 0xFFFFFA800A105160)
    Error: BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER
    file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\usbhub.sys
    product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
    company: Microsoft Corporation
description: Default Hub Driver for USB
Bug check description: This indicates that an error has occurred in a Universal Serial Bus (USB) driver.
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system that cannot be identified at this time.

I am currently on a clean install. I even tried resetting the CMOS suggested by another forum member.
I'll give these drivers a try.

I tried to install these drivers but... no luck. Here are my steps:

    1. Uninstalled the previous Renesas drivers via Control Panel, Programs and Features.
    2. Ran CCleaner to clear out any "leftovers"
    3. Downloaded the new driver via the link provided
    4. Installed the new driver following the on-screen directions and accepting defaults.
    5. Rebooted

USB 3.0 ports are unresponsive. I checked Device Manager to find that the Renesas USB Controller is no longer listed.
I do see a new listing for "Other Devices" in Device Manager similar to the following:

    ? Other Devices
    |
    |------ ! Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller

    Any ideas?

Did they work before you did that?
Maybe a system restore could help then.

The older drivers work but not the new drivers. While the new drivers were installed I got the random BSOD message again similar to the example in post #5.

Try the old drivers again (at least those worked a little better). Then try uninstalling all USB drivers and let Windows install them. It could be any of the other USB's also.

I went back to the older "unstable" driver and uninstalled USB Roots/Hubs/Controllers that Win 7 would allow me to and rebooted. I felt that I was back to square one and it was only a matter of time before I BSOD again. I forgot to mention that I did try this Intel-Renesas driver a while back and it seemed to be stable for a while but the ugly BSOD message returned again sporadically. I did some experimenting and researching and made some notes.

I noticed that the link Dell posted points to being a driver for a PCI card called YET-D720201-0014 (similar as in the Alienware X51 PC). The link says it is for a USB 3.0 demo card. I assumed maybe that our M18x's shared the same USB 3.0 chipset as the PCI card. I found this Dell Support link and tried one of the suggestions posted that said try uninstalling from the Device Manager and then installing the new driver. No luck... doh! The last post by our buddy DELL-ChrisM also points to the Renesas 30230 driver on the Dell Support page posted on this thread.

I did notice something else though, in the Programs and Features window in the Control Panel, the installation size of the posted Renesas 30230 driver was tiny (885K).

I looked at the Install Guide PDF and saw this step:

"4. After the driver is installed, plug the Universal Serial Bus 3.0 host controller demonstration card into your system."

Hmmmmm.... maybe the M18x doesn't share the same USB 3.0 chipset as the PCI card. I did some more digging and found the following post from one of our counterparts at Xotic-PC (pardon this user's avatar... MY GOODNESS!).

"Presently NEC/Renesas USB 3.0 controllers come in 4 flavors and divided into 2 groups for firmware and driver updates.

    uPD720200 and uPD720200a

    uPD720201 and uPD720202

If you have a Sandy Bridge motherboard and prior in a desktop or notebook that has a Renesas USB 3.0 controller embedded it's probably a uPD720200 or uPD720200a.

    If you recently purchased a PCI-e Renesas USB 3.0 add-in card it's probably a uPD720201 or uPD720202.

The only way to know for sure is reading documentation, viewing the printing on the chip."

Confirmed in the card product spec PDF.

"The ET-D720201-0014 is a PCI ExpressTM Add-in Card form-factor Evaluation Board for Universal Serial Bus 3.0 Host Controller LSI uPD720201."

I followed the Xotic-PC forum link to the NEC/Renesas Drivers here. I downloaded driverVersion 2.1.39.0 (October 17th, 2012) for uPD720200 and uPD720200a chipsets (as described above) from the first block of drivers listed. The second block listed is for firmware updates... Steer clear of these!! The rest of the list is for the PCI card versions. I virus scanned the drivers with AVG 2013 and they came up clean.

I removed the 30230 drivers, ran CCleaner and installed the v2.1.39.0 drivers. So far... so good. The installation size in the Programs and Features window in the Control Panel shows an installation size of 1.26MB and a handy dandy USB 3.0 Host Controller Utility is installed as well. We'll see how these drivers work out.

That looks excellent, Brother Zer0WaitState. I look forward to learning if this produced long-term stability for you.
