    Guy OC'ed the i7 4600 to 4.8, beating even the i3 under ln2.

If anyone can get into contact with him maybe we can do some magic with the MQ chips without having to throw 1000usd down the loo to overclock.

It's probably just for the 4600, I doubt intel would be as sloppy with the 4900 series

Maybe the microcode is so old (early engineering sample) that it was never intended to end up in the hands of clock-abusing enthusiasts. Would be a really nice mistake to exploit. The trick would be getting the obsolete microcode installed.

No, it also works for the i7-4700MQ as well and have no reason to believe it would not work for the 4900. Refresh has not been tested AFAIK so Keith's chip would be interesting to see whether it was fixed up at that time.

No again. The CPU's were shipped with the unlimited 'bug' (well 80x or so), it's the microcode update that fixes it. So to take advantage of it the ratios and voltage need to be applied before a microcode update. That means a BIOS mod.

Note that without a microcode update some BIOS may refuse to post so be wary. Also note for this method that AFAIK ratio overclocking is required (check with HWiNFO or check XTU reports "turbo overclockable = true"). This might possibly be a reason the desktop locked Haswell's didn't get a few limited unlocked bins as were available in the previous generations.

Maybe an easier option is to use a microcode update version of 7 or less to allow all cores at the highest limited unlocked multi instead of just one core for a small boost. Note that once set and BIOS has posted another microcode update is usually applied by Windows when loading.

Yeah, but as long as nothing writes to the OC registers, Windows can update the microcode to 1D (latest) and it would keep its settings... :) I don't have anything Haswell based with Aptio 4 BIOS, but if anyone want to play with this, I have attached the microcode 7 for Haswell (06C3) for anyone to play with. You can insert it into your BIOS using MMTool4. Other than that, I will not help you from there.. I'm just the messenger. Don't try to play with it if YOU DON'T know what your doing.. You have been warned. I'm just sharing this as it's hard to find.
