    2.8, 2.53, or 2.4 GHz processor?
    4 GB RAM
    Dual 260m
    300 GB RAID 0 (2x160)
    1920x1200 Display
Standard DVD / Burner not going with the Bluray upgrade.

I've seen similar posted threads requesting suggestions. I wasnt sure if I should create a new one or post in those threads as I didnt want to take focus away from the original poster :)

I'm wondering if it's worth it to spend the extra 150 for the 2.8 as I'm already over my budget. I'm upgrading to the SLI option based on feedback from here :) (thanks again) but I'm wondering how much I'd hurt myself by dropping the processor speed a bit to help absorb the added expense of the SLI.

Thanks for all the very much appreicated advice!

You can take the 2.53 GHz CPU and overclock it up to ~3.1-3.2. I would personally just do that.

I was in the same situation as you in the processor department. I decided to go with the 2.53GHz, you can easily overclock it to 2.8

How do you know you're not infected right now? If you're not running any sort of AV software then you can't be sure. I presume you're at least behind some sort of firewall.

My pal is an expert in these things. He's just finishing a corporate presentation where he emphasises the point that today's malware differs from the viruses of the past. 5 years ago virtually any user could spot if they were infected with something like Melissa. Nowadays the malware writers put a lot of effort into making their output invisible to the ignorant masses.

Just because you don't download executables (must make it hard to keep up to date with upgrades etc. - and who's to say which sites are 100% safe) don't mean that you're not allowing the criminals access to your PC. Do you have Flash, Java, Javascript, Active X, etc. disabled? If not - you're probably infected. If so - how do you use the net? This site alone has 8 scripts running.

Yeah, you could get malware just from browsing a website.

I have said it before and I'll say it again. It isn't the OS, its the number of users. More users = more viruses, Macs don't have a huge amount of users yet compared to Windows, so there aren't a lot of viruses made for them.

EDIT: There are other..much better AVP's out there than Norton and McAfee such as Kaspersky or Bitdefender.

Thanks again for the tips. :)

My question was more about the processor configuration for ordering as noted in the original post. I'm pretty comfortable with tweaking the software/OS and services after I've received it. I wasn't sure which of those 3 processors I mentioned would be the best. But seeing that the 2.53 can be OC'd pretty easily based on the feedback I've received here, it seems like thats a pretty solid processor.

Even so, there is some good info here for people that might not know those things.

I think the configuration I'm going to go with will be:

2.53 GHz processor (based on the OC suggestions posted here)
    Dual 260m
    4 GB RAM
320 GB Hard drive Raid 0

Many thanks for the information. Once I have my system, I'll write up a reivew and post benchmarks for this configuration :)

    Edit: typo :p

I think the confusion here is in the naming of my thread. I should not have used the word, "Tweak". Sorry for the confusion :)

What I was getting at was if anyone had suggestions on the processor choice I was considering when placing the order. I wasn't sure which processor to go with.

In terms of Software/OS/OS services, etc, I'm pretty comfortable making adjustments and tweaking, accordingly :)

Regarding OCing, I wont go crazy with it but it will be fun to test a bit hehe. Although, I do know there are risks involved.

Tweaking hardware isn't a waste. I noticed a pretty big difference in performance when I OC'd my old Q6600 from 2.4 to 3.6...not so much with my Q9650 from 3.0 -> 4.2 but there is a small difference.

The only reason overclocking improves 3dmark scores is because it increases the FPS..so yes it will improve your FPS in games, maybe not by much but it will.

    Don't worry about him. lol

He has done nothing but spout hate towards AW for ripping him off (and then he goes and buys an M17x , go figure!).

We all know here that tweaking your system, whether hard/software, isn't a waste.

Most, if not all, here are hardcore gamers and love raw power. We wouldn't be on a dedicated notebookforum discussing high-end laptops if we weren't!

    That 'he' was a girl?

Anyways, that last statement is very true haha. I would have bought a netbook if I didn't care about power :p. Raw power: 1, not tweaking hardware: 0.

No offense airplane but you are completely wrong ;).

OS X is a posix system and as posix system is much less vulnerable to viruses than a system like windows.

If the user have an IQ with more than 1 digit :)D) the user gonna run programs with a non administrator permissions user so let say that you got a virus...

The virus can't inject in the kernel to hide the process, can't log your keystrokes (at least if it doesn't inject in EVERY program which is running at your user[aka impossible]), it can't even start on boot :p .

So... Can this even be called a virus? :D .

First one was a joke :p.

I guess they are less vulnerable, but I'm sure there are ways for the virus to get through. Obviously you know more about this than I do so I will stop myself now, you win this time! Lol.

So in the end, I really want to know if overclocking the M17x's processor will shorten the lifespan of my hardwares (I Plan to leave it OCed 24/7) - especially if I am not a hardcore gamer but more of a multitasking person.

If so, what am I looking at? 3 years? 4 years? Or shorter?

    Lemon -

Moo has mentioned in the, Overclocking for noobs topic, that its "perfectly safe" to overclock as long as it doesnt go over a certain temp...

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=408230

Look at the very bottom of moo's 1st post for saftey guidelines regarding overclocking
