Would there be any advantage to upgrade from SLI 8800m GTX cards to the 9800 GT version on a M17X? My M17X is OK but sometimes when gaming the GPU temps go into the high 90C range. i read that the 9800 cards run cooler.

    9800m-gt = 8800m-gtx

the only difference is that the 9800 has the G94 architecture, the 8800 the G92 architecture. in the end, the temp difference while gaming might be 2-3°C, not nearly enough to warrant exchanging them.

Yeah, I wouldn't bother upgrading. An 8800GTX config in SLI is smoking. The difference from the 9800GTX or any other 9800 series would be power consumption, different architecture, whether modified or created from the ground up. You would see maybe a 5-7 FPS increase, and less power consumption as well as less heat, however, it mostly is dependent on the cooling system of your laptop and how effective it is. Also, the environment is a huge factor. My x305 runs a 9700m GTS, and I can "super clock" it, as in my signature and i ran prime 95 yesterday as well as nvidia geoforms -shader intensive- and my GPU maxed at 153.4 after running for almost 2 hours. I suggest getting a cooling pad. Is there any option for fan control on your laptop?

I was hoping Alienware would offer the 9800GTX cards for the M17X but that does not seem to be in the plan anytime soon. i think my 8800 GTX cards may be failing do to the high temps. Notice that games are now starting to freeze. Never did that before when GPU temps were lower. Since under warranty Alienware offered to change to the 9800 GT cards or replace the 8800 cards. actually, whats-his-face (the oil platform guy :D) got an email from AW hinting that they're working on putting the 9800m-gtx in the m17x.

Maybe if AW can pull together another revision of the cooling system in the m15x, they can do it there too...

aaaaaaaaaahahahaha... I can't even say that with a straight face.

The only reason I could see for swapping is if your 8800M GTX were on back order. If you have it already, then no point really.

Thanks for the replies. Think i will hold off to see if and when the 8800 gtx cards fail. Then will decide what to do. Maybe i got one of those problem cards from Nvidia. Otherwise i really like the M17X. No other problems.

Technically, you could say that your GPU is NV's fault and not the m17x's. :p

well the 9800 was long overdue for the m17x, but at this point if you still have the 8800 cards, its not worth thinking about changing. Sure it would be nice but think of the money, time, effort , time without m17x, etc.

But it worth it for me. Knowing that something was comming out I waited with a low end gpus. Time for a upgrade.

do you people not realize that the the 9800m-gt is THE SAME CARD as the 8800m-gtx? it's just re-branded, for christ's sake.

Yup, to be honest it's not rally worth replacing the 880GTX witht he 980GT as it's performance is basically the same...

I'd say your better off waiting for Alienware to release the 9800GTX which does have better performance... Only concern might be the added heat (it apparent;y runs hotter than the 8800GTX) But, might be worth the risk for possible 15K 3D Mark.... well, in theory (",)

yeah, i think that with 9800m-gtx's (420gflops compared to 360 for 8800m-gtx and 9800m-gt :D) in SLI with the X9000 should get you close to 15k in 3dmark06.

Agree with most of the replies. Will wait for the 9800m GTX cards unless the 8800m GTX cards completely fail first.

I wounder if the current M17X will support the 9800gtx. I heard it uses more power then the 8800gtx and 9800gt?

Hay whizzo I known the upgrade was going to be soon. I had many people go It was dumb I went for a low, low end dual gpu. But money and cost I stayed with low end.

    But look at this

M15X with 8600 very slow 3dmarks very low.
M15X with 8700 very low mid range. I would think 4,500 3dmarks unknown.
    M15X with 8800 great for M15X 10,000 3dmarks
M17X with dual 8600 faster then a single M15x 8700 and low cost. Smiles 7,000 3dmarks My scores.
M17X with dual 8700 faster but not worth upgrading to 8800gtx or 9800gt. unknown dont have dual 8700 gpus
M17X with dual 8800, 9800 faster but cost is high. But being smart you can buy low end and end up high end with about the same cost or lower. I heard about 13,000 give or take. Close to being 2x as the dual 8600

But dont forget I will have extra gpus just in case of problems.

if you have sli 8700 it is still worth upgrading to 8800m gtx sli. 1 8800m gtx is more powerful than 8700s in sli.
