I bought an M15x with standard 7200 rpm harddrive last november. At that time it was not possible to upgrade to ssd. Now this option is available so I called my sales representive from Dell and asked him how much it would cost to upgrade now? Hè told me this was not possible at all technically to upgrade now but that it must be done in the beginning when you order it.

This seems like a strange story te me. Because the technical manual states that it is possible to insert standard laptop hard drives and ssd 's . Can anybody advice, can I just buy an ssd sata and swap it with my standard drive?

    Your help is appreciated!

You sure can swap in your own SSD. In fact that's what everyone here is going to recommend to you, since the Dell (Samsung) SSDs are not great for the cash, and you're going to see better performance out of the Intel, OCZ, etc. drives.

You are easily able to change hard drive in your M15x. That technician didn't know what he/she was talking about. Its pretty simple procedure. Take off the bottom place and unscrew the hard drive, take off the interposer and put it onto the new drive.

Refer to page 17 of the manual:

    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/M15x/en/SM/sm_en.pdf

You can put any 2.5'' sata drive in there. There are lots of different types of ssd's out there so do your research. I would recommend Intel because of their reliability. However, they are a bit overpriced and not as fast as others brands.

Ok, thanks for your replies. He was talking that it couldn t be done and he also talked to a technician so that is why I was not sure. I still think it is strange, you would expect them to want to sell you something right?

He obviously didn't talk to a tech. Maybe he was going to try to sell you something eventually or he just didn't give a crap and wanted to go home.
