I'm wondering if it's just plain stupid and a waste of money to upgrade to ridiculous speed components that you really don't need. Like the 920QM for instance. Or if you're not a gamer, the best graphics card?

Will these investments be good for resale value, or possibly be useful in the future? Or are you just throwing your money away?

Yes. It's always a good idea to buy things you don't need.

Isn't that how you end up with a wife? ;)

OP, it depends on what your using the computer for. If your not going to benefit from something, then why buy it? You wouldn't buy a car and not drive it, so why by a highend GPU if your not going to push it and a low end GPU will suit your needs?

Depends on your money situation and how much joy it would bring you honestly.

As for the wife, I am more on a rent to own basis.

Resale value is one thing to worry about. For instance I always get the highest res screen because that's what I like. If it didn't matter to me I would still get it because I think that impacts resale value greatly.

On a similar note, if you want to save money and keep the resale value, things such as RAM and CPU can be upgraded down the road when prices drop. Although at that point you might be investing more then it's worth, even including the extras. All depends on how long your going to keep it.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I made the right choice to just get the base M15x w/4GB RAM. When/if I need more power, I'll just sell it and get a new one. I don't really plan on keeping it longer than 1-2 years anyway.

I did get the 900p screen because I think the 1080p screen might be way too small. Seems 900p is just about perfect. I had an HP Envy w/1080p screen and didn't really like how super small everything was unless zoomed in.

Even if you pay 4000, it won't last you 4 years to play the newest games. Especially with dell/alienware you get overcharged for small upgrades. If your thinking in a cost-efficient way, and still want to be able to play the newest games I think it would be best to buy a 2000 euro laptop every 2 years, rather than a 4000 euro laptop every 4 years. Personnaly i'd never go over 1500 euros, but I guess that budget is a laugh for you alienware fans :p

Why an upgrade costs less then a new one and the casing will go 4 years for sure. So i say Buy 3OOO euro lappy and upgrade somewhere else like ebay. The QX9300 is available for 36O euro on ebay. The real question is how long will you be able to upgrade?

If you buy the best thing you can afford at the time, it means your interval between having to make purchases is lower.

I figure I should be able to stretch this one out to late 2011 or early 2012 (maybe a quad OEM CPU upgrade in that time).

Haha. Me either sold the MBP 15" to get the M17x :p But my MBP was only $1,800 + free iPod. 3 months later I sold it for $1,6000 which mean no loss since I sold my iPod for $200 before that. Add another $800 on top of that and bingo, a new M17x :D
