Okay well i have just spoken to Alienware Customer Service AND tech support and its beyond a joke, lol I mean it is like drawing teeth trying to get information out of them it really is. The outcome is that it is likely to cost £350 per card as an upgrade for those who wish to buy the m17x with the cheapest cards then upgrade later to the 8800GTX's, the m17x does not work in single card mode. So this being said to go from the cheap cards to the 8800GTX at a later date will cost £700.

Haha we really need someone to test that. I've never heard of a computer that ONLY works in SLi :)

I think that Dells xps m1730 8800GTX Card's had some diferences than the Clevo one's,and that was if i remember correct that was playing importand role on bench marks,Dexco(sorry if the name is wrong cant remember)was saying that this setup that Dell was using was giving better performance after overcloaking he attemped on his Clevo.
I think they used the same setup for this baby as well and the performance will be as good as the Dell's :).

It is normally possible to disable SLI in the nvidia control panel, would someone like to try it? It would seem weird to have a laptop that won't run on a single card, particularly when SLI doesn't actually work in all circumstances.

The XPS 1730 can be run in single card mode.
I expect the m17x to work in the same fashion, disregard that "witty" AW staff.

The last call I did about the grapics card I was told it would work with a single 8800gtx. That was a week ago. One thing you can do. Is ask for a superviser then ask. When I send this laptop back. I will be ordering a 8800gtx.
