I'm just about to buy a heavily equipped m17x and I need 4 GB of ram. From reading other posts I see that you guys in general recommend buying the 1GB of ram from alienware and separately but 4GB of ram from a site such as newegg, to save money. Thing is I’m from Ireland and newegg do not ship internationally. I’ve been told about this Irish equivalent to newegg called dabs. After searching through this site I think I’ve found what I’m looking for but I would appreciate it if some you guys could have a look and tell me if this ram will work/is good enough for the m17x. If not have you any other recommendations?

The link to the site is:

    Thanks in advance!

I ordered 2x2 GB PC-5300 Corsair for my m17x (on phase 6 now). If I have any problems with it, I can swap that with the OCZ ram that I have in my m1210.
The list of compatible ram that AW released was pretty short. If it needs repair, I'll just put the old ram back in and ship it out.

www.ncix.com - US or Canada, pretty good site.

Thanks a lot guys. Think I’ll order those sticks. Also would you recommend me buying the Zalman NC2000 or can you recommend any better cooler? I’ll be doing a lot of gaming and 3D modelling so I’m guessing the heat will be high. Never owned a laptop before so I’m kinda new to this. One last request! What carrier bag would you recommend me getting? Not pushed on look of the alienware backpacks!

    Thanks in advance!

well, as i've experimentally tested/proven ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=274878), a cooler won't actually help that much with the temperature of your m15x. increasing airflow beneath it yields much better results. propping the laptop up with some books or similar (raising it off the desk, and therefore increasing airflow beneath) is much more effective than using a cooler.

Good work whizzo! Not to sure about using the Lego blocks for everyday use though and as you say “the downside is that it's sorta uncomfortable to use because it's so high up.” Maybe I’ll leave the cooler until I get the laptop and see then weather I need the extra cooling or not. But once again thanks for the help.

it can be uncomfortable, but only if i use the higher stand that fits an 80mm fan underneath. the lower version is fine, i'm using it right now. i intend to test the effects of angled stands tomorrow or friday if i have time.

The Zalman Nc2000 should do great, since you are getting the m17x not m15x

On another thread, someone has an m17x and has informed us that the m17x takes most if not all of it's cooling from the top down, the zalman might help cool the case but it's unlikely it will help cool the m17x... sorry, just thought you could save some money by not getting it yet...

I was goind to get the spire cooler but am going to wait and test the airflow first.

    Just my 2p

Let me bring in some facts to play

The GPU and cpu are all facing UP. That also heat pipping and such. When you flip the laptop over and open the bottem you do not see Fans

I do use a Nexus laptop cooler but it cool to the touch while playing a game.

Morning Atol (",), You realised i was quoting you eh?

I'm waiting to see what temperatures i get at full power, if i need a cooler it will be interesting as there aren't any that cool from below, as in blowing cool air into the keyboard, that i know of lol

    OB

    P.S. nice pictures though (",)

    Hi,

has anyone experience with the Kingston HyperX 2*2Gb Low Latency (CL4) ( http://www.kingston.com/hyperx/products/khx_sodimm.asp) memory in a m15x or m17x? I am thinking of upgrading my (not received yet) m17x with it, but I recon that it will generate more heat than CL5 memory. I have to check with AW regarding compatibility.

i don't think the heat generated by RAM will have much effect, seeing how there are two high-powered GPU's in the machine as well.

beyond that, i don't believe you'll a notice any performance differences between this "HyperX" memory and "normal" CL5 memory.
