    Hey all,

Just wondering if we're able to use the Win7 install disc that came with out Alienware systems on a non-Alienware build?

I'm thinking of making a custom build desktop and was wondering if I'd need to re-purchase Win7 or not, granted that I already have the disc.

How many computers are you able to install Win7 on with one disc?

Or is it only one license limited to the Alienware computer?

    Thanks. :)

I'm pretty sure it's one key per computer on any kind of windows... Unless you cheat.

I used my alienware win7 dvd on some home built computers.

After 30 days or so it keeps giving you pop ups saying that the copy is not legit and you need to register a new key.
You cant have a background image and security essentials dont work.

    Otherwise its fine.

Alienware likely uses the OEM license, which means that it is tied to a single system, and that's the Alienware you bought.

You need a retail copy if you want to install it on unlimited variants of computer, but each must not run simultaneously.

If you have your own system builders' (OEM) copy of Windows, you can, allegedly, call up Microsoft to ask them to reactivate the new computer without fuss.

However, you should be able to use your Alienware CD to install Windows, provided you have another legitimate Windows key to use for actual registration (i.e. not the same as your Alienware's).

I'm closing this thread because there are plenty of other threads to discuss Windows installation.

Salanos is correct... you can use whatever installation media you want to use, but you must own a license for every PC running Windows. The CD, DVD or other installation media is only installation media, not a license. Installing Windows on two or more PCs using a license intended for one PC is not permissible and this is where the discussion cannot lead. I'm actually puzzled that the question actually needed to be asked. It's no different than any other software licensed for use on one PC.
