I am bumping this back to the top. All of the new Alienware 14, 17 and 18 owners are going to want this. Let's pick up the pace on the IdeaStorm page to increase the chance of getting this in a AWCC update. Please use the link above. Register, if necessary, and promote it on IdeaStorm if you haven't already done so.

Love the idea. Created an account and promoted. Hope this feature gets implemented.

Good work. I actually can't believe AW laptops don't already have this.
You'd think Dell might go for it since most machines are going to be at a lower average temp because of it. -

It really is a great idea, even more so because it probably wouldn't take that much for Dell to release it as a software update.....
-
Man, the lack of participation and engagement seem so out of character for this community. I can't believe the lack of interest in this. It is rather disturbing. Maybe my impressions have been wrong and most of the 2000+ viewers are clueless noobs and losers that are not interested in having cool features in their Alienware laptop. I expected that a bunch of enthusiasts would jump on the bandwagon and promote the idea. Perhaps we don't have a "bunch of enthusiasts" like I thought we did.

I remember a horde of people complaining that Alienware should not charge $5000 for laptops with low-gamut reflective screens, and less than twenty promoted my idea. Fortunately, Dell is not blind and had planned to add less reflective screens beforehand. I would still like higher-gamut matte screens (ideally 120hz or IPS) for the 17 though.
Many of those viewers gripe that Alienware does not offer enough for the prices it charges; I do the same, but at least I promote good ideas. -
Joined and promoted. Seems like an easy to do improvement that should have been done some time ago.

Also joined and promoted.
Not on here very often, but this is definitely a feature that is required! -
Perhaps we should link this first when people ask advice in the OC/Launch discussion threads.
I'm so surprised, all these people finding time to post in the owners lounge after they shell out $2000 - $7000, then not give a rats about maximising and protecting their investment. -

Hmm would it likely support older machine like the M15x. If so I will gladly sign up! Otherwise I don't give a rats lol
-
That's too bad that you would only promote an idea conditionally that it would support your M15x rather than support it unconditionally. Right now it's only presented as an idea that would add value, and in the post on IdeaStorm it is requested for older models (including my now obsolete M18x R2). I would still be happy (and jealously miffed) if it did not support older systems, but I would still promote the idea and be happy for those that might end up with it even if I did not.

Because of the strange fan profiles and throttling algorithms Alienware continues to implement, this idea becomes more appealing every day.

The 17, but I don't know whether it applies to the other systems. I was referring to the reports of the 780m downclocking at 66C (77C without Optimus) and the unusually high temperatures some owners are seeing. A modded vBIOS fixes the downclocking, but I imagine that Dell will wash its hands of such things, and I assume that kinks in the vBIOS are causing unusually high temperatures. For example, 88C in 3dmark11 with a light overclock.

So what would this do exactly? Would it prevent the lame throttling that most Alienware mobile cards tend to have?
-
It would be a crude workaround, but it would work. The point is to give users more control over temperatures and fan noise. If they want to bypass Dell's fan profiles, they can do so. I would turn the fans up for temperatures to remain under 66C/77C.
MSI has "Turbo Fan," a feature that turns the fan to max speed. It's noisy, but you can see how helpful Turbo Fan is on the MSI forum. A full, official fan control system would be even better. -

Great idea! Especially since they are promoting: Alienware, always on.

Count me in, VOTED!!! Great idea, brother Fox)

Here is another IdeaStorm with feedback/suggestions on the port design on the new product line. While you are voting, please promote this idea. Here is a link: Idea Storm

I kinda wish they also increase the screen's resolution on these alienware laptops.
nothing too crazy like these newer laptops with the 3,200x1800 but something like 2560x1600 or 2560x1440. -

Promoted ;-)
One of the issues I have with my M17x R4, I feel that the fan profiles are not aggressive enough. A change to command center that would lock in the current settings as the minimum and allow for more (aggressive) fan control would be ideal. -
Bring this up.
If anyone suggests a Gorilla Glass option or more "transparency" about the quality of materials and components used in these laptops, I'll promote that too.
Edit: Something like this for Alienwares would be nice: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/14723_div/14723_div.PDF. -

when a higher resolution becomes the mainstream (maybe 3k or even 4k), I'm sure the alienwares at that time would have that too
