Can the M15x run 64bit? How well does it do? How much of a performance boost can you see? How much would it cost to upgrade from home premium to home premium 64 bit (or ultimate?)

yes you can run 64 bit on the m15x. upgrading is free too. i dont know about performance gain though but you will be able to use all 4 gigs of ram. an important thing for you to know is that AlienFX will not work in 64 bit.

Im on vista 64 bit right now on my m15x. Alien fx and binary gfx don't work, otherwise everything else works (volume slider bluetooth toggle, wireless toggle, stealth mode, webcam, blutetooth, etc). So I would dual boot with xp or vista 32 bit in order to maintain the unsupported functions.

^^ Vista x64 has issues with SLI. Or rather, SLI has issues with 64-bit.

Alienware doesn't offer 64-bit yet mostly because of compatibility. The m15x and m17x are compatible with 64-bit software, but if the user (mainly the majority) has devices such as scanners, printers, cameras, portable media players and the like that don't have 64-bit drivers they are not going to work on a 64-bit OS.

A 64-bit OS requires 64-bit drivers, 32-bit drivers won't work on a 64-bit OS and there is no way to "hack" or "transfer" 32-bit drivers to work on a 64-bit OS other than write a driver for 64-bit.

So be careful if you wish to do this as you may end up with a whole bunch of devices that won't work.

imho it's a matter of time before everything's 64bit. give it a few years, because 32bit will be maxed out pretty soon, and then 64bit will be the next logical step.

Each time system change from Bit like 8 bit to 16 bit to 32 bit and 64 bit it take the software 10 years to go ok let change to the new setup. I think the OS companys need to go NOW not 10 years ago.

    Hi bhattsan,

Did the installation from x64 Vista DVD just installed the correct drivers (for most devices) as you mentioned in your post earlier or did you have find the drivers separately on the web and install the one by one?
