For some reason vista can't initialize the optiarc bc-5600s. Device manager says this:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."

try uninstalling the drive from device manager and reboot.

if it doesn't work, it might also be because the drive has failed.

I tried that and it didn't work. The drive works fine outside of vista. I can boot from the windows cd, but vista just won't initialize it.

It was itunes... Itunes installs a registry key that disables the dvd drive.
