It's a black anodized "plating" over silver aluminum. Scratch the black and the silver shows through.

Great for laser etching bad for nicks.

Ya this was the one reason I would have considered the silver model, it isn't anodized right? Just brushed aluminum?

And if anyone gets these laser etched I want to see pictures! (although same effect can be had with a dremmel patience and VERY steady hands)

Just wanted to check, as anodized just means electroplating as phinagle pointed out. So anodized aluminum means you have an aluminum base with something else plated on it in a VERY thing layer (talking a few atoms thick here).

I would like to see powder coat then baked in over the way they do car paint. That would be awesome on a laptop haha

I don't understand why you wouldn't keep the sleeve on it while it's in your backpack lol. that sleeve will always be on my M17x when it's being transported, that's what it is there for, Dell gives it to us for a reason.

    WILD IDEA...
I am known to polish/plated random stuff (say a 3" nut chrome plated :), polished busted piston from my race car :), polished from wheels to valve covers to intercooler endtanks.
So if it is aluminum, why not get rid of anodized crap and polish to the mirror finish?
I can care less about finger prints; I can wipe the surface off...
Hmm anyone along with me on this one?
ilber<- yeah a nut case in disguises

I always put it into the cloth bag/cover it came with and then into the backpack to protect it. I figured there must be a reason why such a cloth bag/cover has been included.

    Hi Moo,
I'm sorry to hear that your new laptop is already scratched. Unfortantely, none of the Dell warranties cover costmetic damage (or any damage that doesn't prevent the normal operation of the computer). If it gets bad enough, you can always buy the panel kit and switch it out.

    Thanks,
    Gabe
