Folks,
While I can find no information this would impact our favorite alienware notebooks, be aware of the following warning - issued by Blizzard.
Source: StarCraft II
So, my advice to our Starcraft II players - be sure to monitor temps. If you notice any increase in temps, you may want to add in the frame rate cap and see if that helps.
As a note, some of you may not have the main forum on your list of areas to review - some actually bookmark the subforum for their laptop. I have copied over this 'warning' to each subforum for the time being.
Feel free to discuss this bug here in the main forum...

Ugh I don't know if the post is still in the Blizz forums, but I thought I remember them saying that it had been taken care of...
-
not taken care of - several sites are running with this.
-
i saw this before, but is it just for some people? i've been playing sc2 fine since day one
-
Since I do not play SCII, I can't confirm anything. This is just a heads-up to the forum to monitor temps - just in case. Better to be safe than sorry.
-
the bug can fry your graphics cards, so its better to put the fix in anyways then have your nice expensive laptop get fried. -
-
Seems to only affect nvidia cards that use bad cooling. Well cooled cards are fine.
Also, pretty sure having vsync on fixes this too.
-Ash -
the fix onlye buys you some time
and this afects ati's to it afect's me -
Thanks for the tip OP.
I've been seeing overheating issues, especially when playing this game. Isn't this what beta testing is for? -
But it isn't a beta test, it is a commercial "release" product.
-
at least they are admiting to it though -
I feel sorry for people who don't know about this bug.
-
I played through the entire single player campaign with settings on Ultra. I've had audio glitches (most likely unrelated) and two lockups which I suspect were related.
I've just added those lines to my file in the hope it prevents future lockups. -
I guess Blizzard thought it would be fun to include furmark in their main menu...
-
-
apply the fix, fire up sc2 at 1900x1200, play for a couple hours wait and see
if you hsve a soft that can read the 4850 temp an write a log file in real time so i can have a proof when my system self shutdown -
It's not my card that's getting hot but my actual screen and lid are getting very hot to the touch.
-
On another note:
is it just me, but I turn on ThrottleStop Starcraft 2 disables achievements. Or is that just coincidence? -
-
Would running a external monitor remedy this? Thats what I have been using since buying the game, I haven't noticed any issues.
-
So now we can use SC2 instead of Furmark to check the system stability
-
I have been playing max reso/ ultra on external monitor, so far no problems and m11x is not hot to the touch.
Ill add the lines just in case. -

Hey give them a break, its not like they worked years on this game and had the chance to do some testing.
^sarcasm^
Or maybe they can put a warning sign on the game: "Warning, your computer might not be able to contain the awesomeness that is SCII" -
Imagine what will Diablo ||| do to PC's when it's out.
-
I don't understand why this isn't an easy fix for Blizzard to just background patch -
Ok guys... back to the actual bug/temp fix.
Thanks. -
I posted this last week in the Starcraft 2 on m11x thread.. and on its own thread..
You have to do it yourself. It still heats up quick for my m11x but does not go up to 100+ fps in the hyperion. -
For anyone that's playing SC2 on only the internal laptop panel @60hz, I don't see why you wouldn't want this setting in there anyway. Other than benchmarking for max FPS, there's no point in rendering frames >60FPS that won't be displayed anyway.
-
Looks like this issue has dropped off of Blizzard's sticky. Not sure if its fixed or not however I am going to remove this thread from Sticky status over the weekend. Will leave it up for another day or two.

thx again batboy
-
It seems that the bug is fixed. I have the latest version (auto updated, never done any mods) and the menu runs at 40 fps now. Guess its fixed.
-
Excellent - great news guys. Last thing we needed was a bunch of fellow AW folks who had fried GPUs as a result of this - reason for the sticky. Good to hear they fixed it.
Thanks for the confirmation. -
the bug seem fixed here to
-
thats awesome news! we dont have to worry about our laptops then XD
-
