I was pleasantly surprised when I got home today and had an Alienware Windows 7 upgrade voucher in the mail.

I have one of the first batches of Alienware M17x and windows 7 upgrade was not an option...
I never called them and requested one either.

Very nice to have even though I have the RTM full version already...

I dont know if other people that got first batches also got the vouchers.

I just got mine yesterday too. And I ordered from the first batch as well. I guess they figured since we actually got the computer around june 26th that we should still get one =)

Sweet Kilthro, free windows 7 is nothing but good news :) They estimate delivery within 10-14 days for most people once you sign up.

Yes. I never do Operating system upgrades such as xp > vista ; vista > win 7 ect...

I have had to many nightmares doing this at some point.. Either Drivers flake out, or files become corrupt ect.. There is always something along the way that does not work right whether it be immediately seen or a couple weeks down the road.

I love to install things from scratch.. However, Its good to have the upgrade so when i sell the system I have the upgrade for the new buyer and not my version with key. :)

Hey kilthro: from what I have been reading in various places including some other NBR topics - your 'upgrade' version allows either a clean install of windows 7 OR you can upgrade from Vista and retain your settings and other stuff. Apparently the upgrade DVD contains a full version of Windows 7.

To do a clean install, you need to have the Windows Vista disk and keys that came with the system you bought to prove you own it, then you can install a nice fresh version of 7 WITHOUT having to install Vista first. Only thing is, if you DO upgrade to 7, your Vista licence and serial will cease to be valid, and in essence, you will have upgraded your licence of Vista to Windows 7 permanently (which I am fine with).

Sounds like it is less of an upgrade from Vista to 7, and more of a trade in program. Do some reading on it. I can't wait to try it out when mine arrives (turned in my voucher online on the 14th of October, windows 7 DVD shipped on the 22nd, 10-14 days to deliver though DHL), hopefully it works the way everyone is saying it does. It has been 7 days since mine shipped, so it should be here next week. I'll let you know if it works as promised or not.

You should Mandrake.. I never requested one and get one in the mail. It actually came in a bubble envelope.. Surprised me.. I was like what were they protecting??? Paper pamphlet needs a bubble envelope lol

    @Zackb
I will do some reading on it... I have the win7 ultimate RTM full version installed right now so I am good.

    Thanks for the heads up.

My upgrade coupon came 2 days ago, it takes you to a web site where you have to register to have it mailed to you etc...

You do not need the full version of windows 7 to do a full install. You only need a legit copy of vista installed on your computer already or the vista cd. Win 7 will clean install with the upgrade version and wipe out your vista install.

    Marvie is correct,
you can do upgrade or custom option which would do full fresh install. The same upgrade disk would go to people with XP and according to MS there is no "upgrade" it have to be clean install.... so if you got vista-> upgrade will retain all the info, upgrade/custom install will result in a clean slate...
