I saw a thread about this for the Alienware 14's, and this is also present in the 17's, is there a BIOS unlock or anything we can do to fix this? I use my laptop in clamshell mode all the time and this really is hard to deal with :(.

that's crappy, your saying if you flick a button on your external KB or mouse, it won't come out of hibernation ? So you have to hit the power button everytime ?

Correct, option doesn't exist in the later bios revisions.

Just a thought, but have you tried changing the USB power management settings? - by default, they are set to "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" - tree-hugging crap in action!. As your existing USB peripherals are not waking the machine from a sleep state, they have been "turned off" by the computer to save power....and then, of course, they will not have any action with a keystroke and/or mouse movement.

    Try the following (you can always change back if it does not help);

    1. Click the Start Menu and then right click “Computer” and select “Properties”.
    2. In the new window select the “Device Manager” link that is in the upper left hand corner.
    3. In the Device Manager window look down towards the bottom of the window for “Universal Serial Bus Controllers”. Click the arrow to the left of this section.
    4. In the drop down menu look for any instances of “USB Root Hub”. When you find the first one right click on it and select “Properties”.
    5. In the USB Root Hub Properties window look for the tab in the upper right that says “Power Management”.
    6. Click on “Power Management” and uncheck the option that says “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”. Then click “OK”.
    7. Continue to do this for every instance of “USB Root Hub” in device manager.

NOTE: If you want to, you could try putting a check in the "allow this device to wake the computer" box and see if that helps.

What this does is to make sure that the computer does not turn off power to the USB ports when it goes into a Power Saving mode. This should allow you to always wake the PC by use of the USB keyboard or mouse.

Hopefully, it should work - I imagine it would have been a massive error to NOT allow external devices to wake the machine AT ALL.

Let us know if it helps. :)

Oh, and if you are running a SSD, 'true' hibernation mode is not really required...the machines boot up fast enough to make it obsolete, really. You can disable/turn off hibernation and you can claim back valuable SSD storage space by doing so. As a rule, you will generally get back around 75% of the total amount of memory in your machine as extra drive space...eg. if you have 16gb Ram, you'd get back around 12gigs of SSD storage by turning off hibernation.

Here's how: How to Enable or Disable Hibernate in Windows 7 and Windows 8

I've disabled it long ago. It just sleeps, normal sleep. However guess what my Alienware 17 WAS CRAP. First I popped it out of the box and it had 3-5 dead pixels on the top left of the screen, called and got it replaced. Second the optical drive failed, on site tech described it as a "clunking mechanical noise" caused by the dvd's / cd's not seating properly. Third CPU fan wouldn't work AT ALL. When you'd play a game CPU would hit 107*C, the only way around this was to do a bios flash. This lasted until the next reboot. ( the CPU fan working ). Then to top it ALL off. the video card dies LOL. As in it wont post. So I'm sending it back for a refund after a month and a half of waiting LOL.

I guess the IRST makes it hidden under BIOS on the AW17, Will check soon by disabling SSD caching

I've deleted all the SSD cache acceleration options from IRST plus uninstalled it too but still it comes in the BIOS making the USB wake option hidden, Is this like on the new machines or any Mobo issue ??
