I own an M17x and just recently I started hearing a weird grinding sound coming from what I THINK is the right side of the system (I just put my ear next to it and listened).

I was just playing Doom 3 when I started hearing this so I exited the game and waited for the fan to settle down a bit and the noise gradually died off but I still hear remnants of it. This normally doesnt happen as I play games like Dawn of War 2 very often and Ive never heard this till now. And its not my cooling unit because the noise continued even after I shut it off.

My first thought was that I was overheating but that kinda seemed unlikely but I would like a link to a good reliable program that tells you the temperature of your computer just in case.

Any ideas or help as to what this could be?

The heatsink fan for your GPU is defective, I have seen vids of this on youtube. Call dell and they should be able to dispatch a tech to quickly replace it!

GPU-Z will give temps for your GPU's and HWMonitor will give temps of your CPU. The noise definately shouldn't be there. I'd give dell a call if you have the warranty and have them replace whatever it is thats causing the noise

EDIT: Links for the programs I mentioned can be found here in the original post. ;) Hope this helps.

.....What if I happen to live out in the middle of the country? Would they still dispatch a tech?
