The Alienware m15x has been one of the notebooks I've been considering for almost a year already. Now I have around $2k to spend on a notebook, but a year after its' original announcement, the m15x seems a little outdated. The specs are still great and performance is still incredible for a laptop, but there's still a few things I wish Alienware fixed.
First of all, what happened to the black case Alienware has promised us for a year? The silver looks nice, but I really prefer the matte black finish that they use on the m17x and all of their other laptops. It also looks like the black finish is made out of a higher-quality material, though it might not. At the price that Alienware sells the m15x at, every other comparable laptop has a LED backlit screen, or at least the option of one (everything except the Sager NP8660). I've never seen a CCFL backlit screen on any laptop that has even come close to any LED backlit screen that I've seen.
Another thing I wish Alienware would do is improve the screen hinge so it doesn't wobble as much as it does, that could get really annoying. This is a small complaint, but I wish Alienware would improve the touchpad. From what I've heard in every review, it's not that good, even with one of the stickers on it. Finally, for a laptop that Alienware wants to be the fastest 15" out, it should have Montevina.
I'm one of those people that wants a powerful laptop that I can actually use on my lap so a good touchpad, keyboard and size (the m15x seems to have the last two) would be great. I wouldn't play first-person shooters on my lap, but RPGs and MMORPGs could be fun to play. Anyway, that's just my feedback on the m15x. The biggest things that would really get me to order one would be a LED screen and a black finish, hopefully in skullcap. Hopefully, Alienware will surprise us before the holidays...

welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll nice idea man but aw will never do it. It seems that they are convinced that is the consumers fault with the problems with there notebooks.

Market strategy perhaps ... Get ready to see a M15 or a R15 , wtv it'll be called, next generation M15 in black !! There's no way a company will make a perfect product. If they do, how can they update that product then? Right? That's how it works. Sellings. You can't put everything you have into a single product, you have to plan for years and years to come.
-
Well Id like to see a m17 in a 15" package! just some of those features are VERY tempting. Interesting how alienware decides to release a 17" when its not the 17" department they need to work on.

i think they MFGs can make a perfect product. Once a form factor that is a PROVEN champ has been made, then you SHOULD just be able to upgrade components to the newest and latest and greatest. SURE you should probably also have to upgrade the cooling system, layout maybe of some ports, etc... but i think it can be done!
-
how in the world would you want to upgrade the layout of the ports?
-
i'm just saying. with new motherboards, sometimes ports change location. I meant that the case would have to be changed slightly to accomadate a new MOBO's port layout. but the basic laptop design should in all reality stay the same for the most part.

A new mobo and chassis is basically a new laptop...

I think if there is anything that is to be released from AW at this point, I'd say it'd be a month before Christmas (around November 25th?) It'd be highly unlikely, but seeing as how we've only known about the M17 a week before it was released, it won't really be a surprise.
-
AW released the M17 because it was easy to do (all they had to essentially do was replace the lid).
They could do this with the M15 as well. Just take the Clevo 860TU and slap an Alienhead on and paint it matte black and you have the M15.
What Alienware Should Do With the m15x
