I just purchased my first alienware laptop and really like the customizeability of the laptop and build quality. Is there any firm news about future upgradeability or will the m17x just stay within the current tech and not be upgradeable in the future?

The reason I ask is im a natural born tinkerer. I usually build desktops but since marraige the big loud desktop had to go

Current rumors have the M17x as being maxed out with the 280M SLI/4870 SLI. Whether Dell releases a bios update for it to support the 5800 series is still up in the air. I think M15x owners have a better chance of seeing a GPU upgrade to 5800 series than current M17x owners. There's almost a guaranteed refresh of the M17x coming with i7 + 5800 GPU and it should be announced at CES. If you just placed the order for the M17x, I'd advise you to cancel it and wait after CES to see what Dell announces.

Id rather not. The reason being is I didnt order it from Dell and paid sub 2k NIB for a qx9300/ 260m sli/500gbx2hd/8gb ram/1920x1200 screen. Im sure the reason these prices are available is the impending refresh and I can not bring myself to pay ~3-3.5k for a laptop.

I guess worst case scenario I just keep buying like this and ebaying the old laptop since Im not paying retail. Hopefully there is a bios fix for the future though however all things considered it would probably be a wash cost wise.

Another reason Id rather not is new laptop on the bleeding edge usually means new problems. The m17x is just now finally getting all its wrinkles ironed out, I dont need the wife beating me over the head with my super expensive laptop when she tries to watch youtube lol.

CES is in January. Its Consumer Electronics Show/Expo. Most new TV's and various electronics/cellular phones are shown.
